  • Newcastle look set to extend Sean Longstaff's contract with an additional 2 years for the midfielder. In the world of PSR it is protecting the club from him leaving for nothing, but will we see Sean slip down the pecking order in those midfield roles?

Longstaff might not be in my starting lineup, but I believe he's incredibly valuable as a squad player. There's a reason Howe trusts him so much-he consistently puts in the hard work that often goes unnoticed and is rarely ever injured.

Regardless of whether a player is ‘one of our own’,longstaff stood out in rafa & bruce’s teams when he was starting out,but we’ve long since moved on & he should not be starting ahead of tonali. Having canny lads around the dressing room will not get us to where we want to be.

Totally agree. Yeah great he's a local lad done well, but we've got an Italian world class international sat on the bench when Longstaff starts? It's all wrong. He's a squad player at best, we can't go forward with players like Murphy and Longstaff starting games

To be honest, I thought Matty Longstaff was a better player than Sean but that aside, he reminds me of Mick Martin who was a decent player for us in Division 2 but was always found lacking in the top Division. At 26, he's peaked for me but if he's happy to be a back up for Bruno, Tonali, Willock, Joelinton and both of the Miley brothers then fair enough.

We should offer a longer contract at the same wage level. We need that depth if we are in Europe next year. Sign him up for 2 years and look to sell him.

He may be limited, but he is solid enough, I believe that he will be replaced at some point, but tie him down so that we can get a fee for him when he is moved on eventually. He must be worth 20-25m in today’s market, so tie him down and move him on on the next 18 months for a decent fee we can then re-invest. You need reliable back up and Sean gives you that

I’ve long pondered whether Eddie wants his best players to be on the bench for a logical reason - because he doesn’t have quality in depth in the squad, he needs to eke out the quality that is available to him over a long period of time in the season. The fatigue of the opposition’s best players facing our freshest best players counts in our favour later on in games, so it’s not what quality you use, it’s when you use it? It’s a bit of a reach and of course you end up riding your luck when your weaker side concedes and leaves you with a hill to climb. Remember, we’re going behind to Wolves here. It’s not City where we’d be three down minutes if we play like we did at Mollyneux. We’ll have to bring the strongest to the front against those top sides.

I think Sean Longstaff is a solid squad player to have. I think we need to keep some of the local NUFC boys and academy products in the fold so that there is a connection to the community. I agree we need to evolve the team we have, but we have to keep the passion and intensity that let to our success. I became a fan of the club during a time when we signed a lot of big name mercenaries who couldn't be arsed to put an honest shift in. Say what you will about quality, players like Longstaff and Dan Burn will work hard every game and keep the other players honest.

Tbf when Burn has played at CB especially in the first 2 years he’s done a cracking job.
It’s when he’s expected to drag that huge frame up n down the wing at LB.
My biggest criticism of BIG Dan Burn is that. Onside ring his size he doesn’t score enough from set pieces!!
Surely he should’ve been working on that side of his game.
Every team needs a CB like Terry/VVD etc who contributes when they go up for a corner

This is the final f-ing straw. Im now at the point where i want answers as to the direction of the club going forwards. Sean longstaff is worth £0 as a footballer. He wouldn't get a game at my sons u18s team, he contributes absolutely nothing on the pitch at all. Im disgusted by this, he should be released not offered a contract, he wouldn't be wanted anywhere near any club in the entire football league. He’ll look better coming off the bench against legs that have been running for 70 minutes already, but against fresh world class players he’s just not good enough quality. He is weak in possession, he can’t create quickly to feed our truly world class players like Isak and he concedes the ball too often plus he’s not that quick despite being able to run all day - it’s all to no effect.
