Craig, I don’t often disagree with you but today in some respects I do. You are stirring the pot about behind the scenes ‘disharmony’ leave it alone. They’re adults they can sort it out. Do your journalistic job by securing an interview with Mitchell or get your questions to him and leave Eddie to focus on his job. We don’t need journalists extending the story to the detriment of the club. Other than that I’m largely with you. But I would start Barnes, Gordon and Osula if Isak misses out.

“The lingering tension that exists”…. Bro, it’s you. You’re the lingering tension. Asking a thousand questions about if a manager and a sporting director are speaking to each other every week is akin to wondering if your girl has behaved on a night out without you. It's gossip journalism at this point, that doesn't help us fans as we have no influence over the running of the club or any other outcome, and constantly putting any potential issues or tension in the public eye hinders rather than helps any reconciliation that may or may not need to happen. It's making the club look bad for absolutely zero gain to anyone but content creators and the meda farming engagement.

    • @donmongoose

@@shaunkellyrepsforbensham1170 Seems an overly simplistic view, more has happened in the club than Mitchell arriving.
And even if we focus soley on Mitchell and ignore everything else, has he 'brought negativity' to the club, or is there simply some growing pains and a 'getting used to each other' period that's bound to happen in situations like this, but has been blown out of all proportion by the media? And how can you judge Mitchells transfer policies when he barely had a foot in the door before the window? And under who's previous policy were we forced to sell players like Anderson and Minteh? We can't blame Mitchell for the gap we needed to close to not breach FFP.
I'm not "getting behind Mitchell at the expense of Howe", I love Howe and hope he gets the time needed to win us some silverware, but things weren't quite going as planned, changes have been made and Mitchell's CV seems to suggest he's good at his job.
As for your last point, just because the question is there doesn't mean there's any use, point, need or positive from asking it. Constantly talking about a 'rift' that may or may not be there is the LAST thing that'll help close it.

How often did Howe speak to Ashworth? I always got the impression that Ashworth was a bit detached from recruitment for the first team squad, and that's why he wanted to leave.
From the outside, it looked like the club was being run as a but of a family with Staveley calling the shots. Is this what led to the PSR scamble and then a restructure with clear roles and responsibilities?
Mitchell should be focussing on the academy and the scouting network. There is time to look at the future transfer targets that will help Howe take the club forward in January and next summer. If Howe wants a centre back and a right sided attacker then there needs to be an agreed list based on playing attributes required by Howe and what the club can afford from a sustainability point of view.

Asking about a perceived problem will not create one and the answer will only serve to settle the fans' minds. However, if there is tension then the best way to sort it out is to confront the problem head on and this is where good journalism comes in.

Craig is a journalist - and there aren’t many proper ones left in football.. His job is to get onto the inside track at the club as much as he can, and tell his readers what is going on, both on and off the field, rather than just relying on press releases. There is clearly a problem at the club when the DOF and the manager are saying directly opposite things, and the CEO has said nothing publicly. (For what it’s worth - unless Mitchell has been mis dialling and getting through just by chance to an Eddie impersonator - I believe Eddie). Does anyone honestly think that it is not Craig’s job to report it. Journos ask questions not just to get answers but to give people in Eddie’s position the opportunity to clear the air. Eddie handled the whole situation really well and then closed the issue down. I for one hope that Craig keeps asking awkward questions if he thinks there are issues there and that he keeps on reporting them constructively. Like everyone, I prefer to hear good news about the club - and to be fair, Craig’s brought us his fair share of it since the takeover, but when I don’t like the message I don’t shoot the messenger. you kinda hit the nail on the head here, just you have come up with the wrong conclusion. Craig is a journalist with access to the club and sources, He could actually investigate his hunch rather than asking in press conferences about up coming matches. He knows that in these press conferences Eddie Howe only likes talking about the team and the upcoming match. Eddie has also been known to say he has no involvement or there have been no conversations when there have been cause he doesn't want further questions about them (he has repeatedly mislead in press conference over the years, and fair play to him). Personally i think Eddie Howe defending the signings is the right thing to have done, by and large the signings have been great. However i also agree with Mitchell that our strategy, one that led to the transfer window we just had demonstrates something is clearly wrong with the strategy, the only reason we didn't get a big PSR points deduction is because we sold two young promising talents. Clearly if we want to sustain our push for the top 4-6 then this strategy is not fit for purpose. Craig himself has been very critical of how the transfer window played out and critical of the previous summers transfer window as well. Any person with two brain cells can see that we have a director of football who wants to create a transfer strategy that protects the club in the long term and stops the mess we all just witnessed and we have a manager who isn't necessarily at odds with that but who is more concerned about the here and now and the current squad and less concerned/less versed with the finances. The media want this to be more of a story then it is.

Craig, you are spot on with the Mitchell stuff. Eddie has been careful today not to pour petrol on it all but he made no attempt to extinguish the flames. It would be very easy to say they’ve spoken and all is well, when discussing unity at the club he didn’t name check the SD; so it is clear that’s not the case. I feel the issue, rather than anything related to what went on this summer, is the foot in mouth interview he gave and obviously they’ve not discussed it since; probably both feeling it wasn’t up to them to do so. However, Eddie was clearly offended (and no doubt some of the staff were - his nephew) by what was reported hence him defending transfers etc. For his part, I think Mitchell is not greatly articulate and actually probably meant no offence but put things in an inelegant manner that has left a bad taste. Mitchell probably thinks he said nothing wrong based on his intent. Both have egos but I don’t think there is a great problem that can’t be resolved by getting them in a room and talking - Eales should do that! Eddie has heaped praise on Bunce, he is Mitchell’s man, so Mitchell clearly has some capabilities (if lots to prove).
Interesting that few are revising the narrative on the PCP exit on the basis of liquidation - the narrative that Eales got them the push is clearly nonsense and it was obviously the right thing they left when they did for the club.

Because this story has rolled on, unless there is now an explicit declaration of behind the scenes harmony, Newcastle United are likely to lose a well-loved manager or a sporting director as early as in the next few weeks. Craig Hope is right to keep pushing the club into resolving this issue.

It's funny because Howe has called for unity as journalists will always try to cause more division. The sensationalism between your article and Mark Douglas' was night and day. Paul Mitchell needs time to come up with a plan that everyone will agree on. That probably includes not paying over the odds on British players, which ultimately leaves you with PSR issues. I don't understand your obsession with wanting to know if Howe and Mitchell call each other every night.

I like many fans are sick of hearing it now! Eddie trying to dampen the flames whilst you are trying to pour petrol on them, please give it a rest and let them sort it out without media interference! As regards team it’s obvious really after recent performances Trips and Kelly fullbacks, Tonali and Willock in midfield, Bruno keeps his place as he is captain! Barnes and Gordon both wings given license to roam and swap keeping defence off balance and hopefully create chances for whomever is CF which if Isak not fit Joelinton maybe an option as Gordon doesn’t like to play thro’ middle or with his back to goal. Just my thoughts

"The lingering tension that exists" - At this point Craig it feels like you actually want the tension! When a new DOF joins a club there will always be some teething problems but usually they get sorted out. Rehashing the same bullshit over and over again to Eddie isn't good for anybody, nobody can change what's happened, and in fact it just spreads negativity around the place. Also if it's true that Howe and Mitchell haven't spoken much right now why would that be a bad thing at this stage of the season? Mitchell needs to go away and draft a whole new transfer strategy for January which is still months away - and Eddie has massive games to prepare in the meantime so what would they even be talking at length about right now!? As for the 'not fit for purpose' quote well considering our transfer strategy left us having to sell Minteh & Anderson to avoid a points deduction, and the fact we still have Isaac Hayden on the books with two years left on his contract then yeah our model isn't fit for purpose! He isn't wrong - so I think all this is journalistic bullshit thats been blown WAY out of proportion. I also get a strong feeling that Eddie is getting really irked by these Paul Mitchell/transfer questions and just wants to focus on the football ahead....so focus on the FOOTBALL
