I took Fly Tying lessons from Dick Talleur. He was such a great flyer and teacher.

I've loved these tie offs since they started, and now with the three of you it may be more than the world can contain😂 dynamite banter and friendly trash talk and as always informative and inspirational to get in some time at the tying bench 😁🤙

Fascinating how a pattern with a dedicated book ended up having three different tiers make it three different ways, none of which are exactly like the description in the book 😆 Tom is right, though: the originals only had the hair come barely past the end of the bend. Of course he was using 7xl hooks rather than 3xl, so being past the bend was still long enough.

Would love to figure out when these happen live. I’ve set every notification available and I have never caught one live. When do they occur live??

If you subscribe to the Orvis You Tube Channel you will get an announcement when they are scheduled. Tie-Offs are typically once a month but depends on the tiers' schedules. Tom often ties by himself live, usually on Mondays. But he has been traveling a lot this year so does not have an exact schedule.

Thunder Creeks were Keith Fulsher's fly. He was particular about the bucktail re size and straightness. Look for his book.
He also translated many traditional feather salmon flies into hair wing patterns.
And was generous at the vice and on the river.

Joe Bates credits Carrie Stevens with the reverse tie bucktail concept long before WWII.

Sorry to say, but I’ve seen Tom tie a bunch of flies now and he’s definitely not a very good fly tier. Sorry Tom but it’s just my observation! Just a little about me. I’ve been tying flys since I was 14 and now I’m 67! I’ve been a guest fly tier for a few fly shops but my memorable was tying for Blue Water Outfitters grand opening in Hancock,NY. I was approached by Montana Flynn Company to design flies for them but being in law enforcement it was hard to make that kind of time for them. I did tie commercially for 3 4 different fly shops. Paul Weamer and I were fishing Spring Creek in Bellifonte Pa when he asked me to tie flies for the shop opener. Being good friends with Paul since his days at West Branch Anglers I said sure I’ll try e you some flies! Well after his list hit 125 dozen I said is that all! LOL! I had no problem until he said he needed them in 3 weeks!!! Good thing I could take off a few day from work to get them all done for him and Coz! Sorry to blow my own horn but I’m very proud of my abilities to not only tie flies but to create some very good patterns! Keep up the good work guys and it was a pleasure to watch you guys have fun! I was never tied flies for notoriety. Take care fellas!
