    ► FAQ
    Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
    A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.

    How nice to see Leeds. I grew up in Harrogate, then Leeds. My grandfather and his brothers ran a timber importing business that was based on the canal, near to where the Royal Armouries are now. Back in the 60s, when I was a boy, it was a great thrill to visit the timber yard and ride in the cabin of the crane that went over the canal to unload barges. The area was very different then; no smart apartments or museums!

      That crane sounds like an interesting view to have had! Amazing how much these places change in so short a time, really! M

    Ah Leeds, my second favourite city (after Glasgow) the scene of my teenage years. It's a city of high places and big views -Belle Isle, Seacroft village, Armley, Woodhouse Ridge / High Headingley and other places. I was also pleased to see some good quality graffiti these days. Not all of it, that's never the case, but some excellent work amongst the tags and rubbish.
    You were actually in the City of Leeds since before Rothwell. The boundary is more than half way between there and Castleford.

    Good to meet you and finally see your take on Leeds! I suspect you may have dodged a bullet not mooring at the Armouries.
    Last time I did, planning on only staying for a night, I was stuck there for over three weeks as the river went into flood and they shut the lock gates.
    And Granary Wharf is a sore point. They've not fixed the gates there which are clearly knackered and leaky and have been for a few years now. They just ash it up rather than fixing it. So it is often very short of water. I used to love mooring there but the past year has been awful and more often than not I find my boat sat on the canal bed.
    Come on, CRT. Get it sorted.
    Other than that, Leeds is a great city for boaters. A small community but friendly enough.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They seem to have tried to treat the low water levels by just turning on a pump that was running continuously, though we still grounded out in there! M

    Don’t get me wrong... I’ve watched with very great interest all your vlogs. I am, however, now very pleased you’re now on an actual canal (as opposed to a river). I admire your intention to cover all navigable inland waterways of England, but canals is the way forward for me. Looking forward to more.
    I visited the Leeds Armoury 20+ years ago and it was very interesting. I trust you will get an opportunity soon. I’ll be sure to watch out for you on the Trent and Mersey where I spend most of my time cruising these days....all the best.

    Hey, good to have you back! I missed you. Awwwww! I was actually concerned that you two had been sucked down into the whirlpool created by pulling the plug, like Jono seems to be stuck in. I am thrilled to see that you are okay. If you hear of any Jono sightings, do (please?) let me know?
    I had heard of Leeds but thought it was about half the size of York. I'm surprised! I have been to Texarkana. And that is about all I can say about that. Well, I could also say that they are very proud of their hotel rooms there and I never figured out why. I will be honest. It was one of the best stopping points when driving from the East to the Southwest. I allow myself so many hours in a day and more than half the time, it ends up being the place I would be at my stopping time. I really haven't given it much of a chance. If anyone from the area sees this, feel free to clue me in about what is there. Oh Michael, I am with you about museums you have been wanting to see closing during your closest intersect you have been at only to discover it is closed. Then being incredibly disappointed. Did you find a virtual tour and then spotting what you could through the window? Not nearly as good as going in but an interesting peek before you return.. I didn't know it was there and now I want to go
    to Leeds.
    Great video and thank you! I enjoyed it very much and I look forward to your next one. 😁

      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got just enough of a peek in the glass staircase to draw me back to the Armoury. I’ve never really found virtual tours work for me, always want to see the thing directly. Hopefully things right themselves sooner rather than later! M

    Just a note to say how much I enjoy your videos... I was last on the canals in the 1990s and enjoyed a long term 8-week hire from Black Prince and had different sets of friends that joined me as we did very good coverage of the canals of northern England and the midlands. You folks are at the top of my list of people I would love to share a pint with at a canalside pub. Given my age, I doubt I will get to fly back to the UK in my remaining years... but who knows. In any case, thank you for both your normal videos and your stop-motion speed videos. Consider some realtime videos with just music or even just ambient canal sounds, as a long-form 2 to 6 hour in length.
    Battery power hand tools modified with rubber drive wheels might ease the exertion needed to turn the sorts of gate wheel paddle controls that you saw in video 310. You are both still very young but looking ahead to the autumn of your cruising years it might be worth looking into.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s a number of technical hurdles to real time videos that we’d need to overcome, mainly powering those GoPros (they’re older models with no direct power connector and a battery that dies in a little more than half an hour when recording video), but also logistics of storing all that data... we’ve found it better to stick with the timelapse approach for our trips. As for the modified power windlasses spinners, I like the idea but Jo thinks it’d be cheating! M

I'm a little surprised a few more people in America don't know of Leeds as the Leeds United football team are partly owned by the San Francisco 49ers.

    The boat you past which has sunk was a live aboard which was usually moored at the Staithes Landing on the right just past it. At the end of 2019 we had a big flood which washed it downstream and onto the opposite bank to where it lays now. There were then two further floods which washed it from the bank to where it met its sad end. It’s been there months now, it’s called Grace Darling. I live local and walk my dogs in the fields there.

    Your vlogs are great watching and very educational for somebody like me who will be a narrow boat owner next year, where are you buying all your bits and bobs such as the walkie talkies and life jackets, a boat chandlery or e-bay.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well they come from all over really... Midland Chandlers is a major source, and their locations are all pretty well stocked and worth a visit (or several) for a new boat owner. Many items we get off of Amazon, as when they’re “fulfilled by Amazon” or “sold by Amazon” they’ll usually ship to their Amazon Lockers, and there’s very often one not too far from the canal. The rest is whatever chandlery we happen to stop by and find useful stock in. Not really eBay users at all, but I’m sure it could work. Also when you’re new on prepare to run up a bit of a bill at Screwfix and/or Toolstation locations, it’s amazing how many little odd tools you’ll find you need over time!! You’ll love life aboard once the initial learning curve has been conquered! M

    That variable height barrage across the river isn’t the first by about 120 years! To conserve navigational depth between Kingston upon Thames and Brentford the Victorians constructed Teddington lock and, later, Richmond lock and moveable barrier. The 2 cast iron foot bridges which run across the top of the lock are an early example of monetisation of an asset! Wikipedia has the gist of both the engineering and social aspects of the story.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe Jo was quoting a notice on gov.uk, it’s the first time such moveable weirs have been installed specifically for flood control: www.gov.uk/government/news/innovative-moveable-weirs-now-in-place

    • @kevinrkinsella
      @kevinrkinsella 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Minimal List : thanks, interesting difference is that the Richmond half tide barrage is manually operated by horizontal hand wheels which are similar to some lock sluice mechanisms; hard work for the lock keeper.

    The whole of the M62 corridor is interesting...although it was designed in it's original form in the 18+19th century, well before the advent of the motorways. Liverpool has lots of colonial history and especially trading history, Wigan is known for mining, pies and a pier that isn't a pier (if you have time visit the pier head museum in Wigan), Manchester is the birthplace of the computer, industrial revolution and the Imperial War Museum (although technically, I think, it's in Salford) and then Leeds home of the oldest surviving film, Hippo bones found in the city centre, Houdini nearly dying and Sooty and Sweep! Safe travels

    With narrowboat ownership being so 'loosely tracked', it seems like someone industrious could go refloat and appropriate the sunken narrowboat 4 minutes in. I'm sure somewhere deep in the annals of UK law is the appropriate info on salvaging rights on the canals, but even without it, it seems like once you have a narrowboat and it's not 'clearly' stolen, then possession is 99% of the law and you can go about getting all the BSS, etc on it after you do your thing. I'm sure the locals would know when you reflected it and could inform the owners if that's locally known, but depending on the boat, it may have been a transient boat or even floated down from somewhere further up and then sank, to the point they wouldn't know who was doing the work on it VS the 'proper' owners. Heck, it seems like if you said "Yes, we've been asked to get it moved to be restored" no one would be complaining and I doubt if it'd become major news. A bit weird, but not terribly different from buying a truck out of a field and getting it retitled, but at least vehicles have the VIN for tracking, etc.
    On the south basin of the Leeds Dock, in one of my 'random readings' whilst following other narrowboat videos over time, I remember running across an article about it being leased by the group that manages the buildings around it (residential and commercial mix) and they have some sort of plan to have an entertainment/events platform in the basin on the water. I think that's why there're no moorings or boats in it at present. This may be completely incorrect or out of date as it's been at least a year since I remember reading that :)
    Now I'll never get any sleep worrying about boomerangs.
    And I'm glad George got a cracker :) But hopefully M got to eat eventually, as well!
    Thank you as always for taking the time and effort for these videos. I love seeing parts of the canal network in your videos that sometimes get missed by others, and the very candid descriptions of the "This part was hard and we're tired" as it helps put everything in perspective. Please stay safe and hopefully there's great weather for your next cruising days. I love this upcoming section of canal from seeing it in other videos, and I'm really hoping you get to have the best time on it!

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that! As for the salvage idea, as I understand it Wreck and Salvage law in the UK applies only to coastal waters and naturally flowing tidal rivers... the moment you’ve passed a lock or weir then a sunken boat is Lost Property and you can’t legally keep it once recovered. Not to say some might not try, but it could leave them facing charges of theft if there were a paperwork trail and a hull number to follow. Probably better to avoid the hassle and purchase the dunk boat outright, as I doubt the owner wouldn’t part with it cheaply in most cases. M

    • @SeanMcPhersonSenior
      @SeanMcPhersonSenior 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MinimalList Oh, I definitely wouldn't think of doing it, but it seems surprising when you see some of them sunk that sit for years in some cases (i've seen videos from various channels where the same boat is sitting sunken in the same spot through multiple years). Someone with some gumption and enough ping pong balls can do some cleanup ;) Would be interesting to see what a sunken hull would go for, but also makes me wonder there'd be 'fees' associated with it (ie, if I own a boat, and sink it in the canal, and leave it for 6 months with diesel and my toilet and other bits leaking out, and then sell it to someone, is there any sort of debt associated with the damage to the CRRT system, and is tied to the owner at the time of the event or the new owner who recovers it? Scary legal questions, unfortunately.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, my guess is there’d potentially be a lot of charges that would follow on with the hull... the CRT has quite a legal process to go through to seize a boat, as private property rights are pretty strong here, so unless it’s actually impacting navigation or the environment negatively they don’t usually go to that (largely unrecoupable) expense. Liability for raising one without permission from a whole bunch of different people and authorities would probably be pretty high, and the value of whatever you brought up probably not more than scrap value on the metals. • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not really all that messy... the Constitution doesn’t define citizenship at all outside of the 14th Amendment, which is pretty unambiguously clear that you’re a full citizen if you’re born or naturalized on the territory of the United States and subject to the jurisdiction of its law (the latter part only applies to children born to foreign dignitaries/consulates/missions and their staff)... Puerto Rico is definitely US territory, hence people born in Puerto Rico after its annexation are full citizens under the Constitution, whether or not the US Code clarifies that point, though it did. It may not be a State, but there’s no real argument that every person born there isn’t a full-fledged native citizen. M
