    ► FAQ
Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.

Yes please. It will bring back memories of our trip through the tunnel at the end of last May, as did this vlog. Other memories - being left grounded overnight by CRT , "You'll be right out there won't you? Promise we will be back in the morning" in the middle of the canal just below Pigtail Lock where you moored for the night. In CRT's defence, they had worked hard to get us that far and it was 6.30pm when they gave up.

Many thanks Jo and Michael for another lovely vlog, I really enjoyed it. Being a bit of a canal geek I hope you'll allow me to correct a little bit of your commentary. The 240 yard extension of the tunnel at the Western (Diggle) end isn't new, but was built in 1893 in connection with the new double track railway tunnel. Also some bits of interesting info about the tunnel - Although the canal was officially closed in 1944 it is believed that the last boat through in 1948 was a 30ft cruiser called Ailsa Craig with L T C Rolt and Robert Aickman on board (founders of the Inland Waterways Association). The boat got stuck in the tunnel, and Tom Rolt decided to charge through the narrow bit, luckily managing to get through to Marsden without sinking. Out of the total cost to build the canal of £400,000 the tunnel cost £160,000 in 1811 (about £13M in 2020 money). There were several quite dramatic accidents in the tunnel over the years including a boat carrying stone window cills that capsized in 1855. The leggers were in the water for three hours and the tunnel had to be drained, so the boat, its load and the men could be rescued. Walking over the top may have been the safer option and I can understand the reluctance of many people to go through the tunnel. Thanks for letting me ramble on and I hope all three of you are safe and well after the weekend's storms.

Ahh, thanks for the correction, I was going off what I’d understood from our guide, but I may we’ll have misheard. Yes it’s had quite a history of mishaps and incidents... it’s funny I’ve got no trouble at all going caving, but Jo thinks I’m nuts! M

I have been reading years of old issues of Waterways World magazine and just came across the news about the reopening of the Standedge Tunnel from March 2000. It was proposed for safety reasons to only use electric powered tub boats that would pull short "trains" of boats through the tunnel. There would be no use of internal combustion engines allowed. All the boat passengers would have had to ride in the tug boat, leaving their boats to bounce there way through the tunnel. But they were looking at ways to install bumpers to minimize damage to the boats. The only thing that I see in common between the old article and your video is the use of a volunteer to ride along and having to book transit times. Thanks from America.

Congratulations on being the first crew to acheive the Silver Propellor Award. We have been watching your vlogs from episode 1 over that last few months in preparation for starting our own narrow boat adventure on the 1st of March. We have certainly picked up loads of good tips and hints that will help us in the future. We are now up to date and will be looking out for your future vlogs with interest, now that we have:

If you come back through he tunnel please stop just before entering and see the plaque about the champion legger just before you enter the tunnel. I have watched several you tube vloggers recently and everyone seems to miss it, its right next to the cafe where the tour boats set off.\Also stop at grandpa greenes for ice cream in Diggle its a sin to miss it. The villages around Saddleworth are stunning -- Delph , Diggle, Dobcross, Uppermill. are all picturesque morr up next to Uppemill musuem and take time around the area you will love it, the people are so friendly aswell.

I keep telling Sadie that she has it good here on her 160 acres of farm and woodlands. Still, we keep thinking what having a narrowboat and big run for Sadie would be like.. Like having a large farm. A complex system to operate. Sadie keeps telling me, look at all the places she can run. At moment everything here is mud. Sadie isn't getting her long runs, and keeps watching your videos and George. I think she might be jealous. She can look about the entire area but can't run about on it, because of all the mud.

Sparth Reservoir is a lido, and does indeed see skinny dipping! For many years local schools used it as the location for an "outdoor mile" competition, then it was closed, officially at least, after a fatality. It continued to be used in spite of No Swimming signs. Recently the local authority appear to have relented, and lido signs are again in evidence.
The Standedge canal tunnel serves as emergency access in case of an accident in the rail tunnel.

Now you are taunting us! Challenging locks, mahousive, challenging tunnel and stunning, Pennine views and villages? That's the stuff of dreams for an Enthusiastic Hire Boater. As long as there's a hire boat yard at either Ashton-under-Lyne or Huddersfield, I think the 'out and back' can be done, provided the tunnel can be coordinated.
My only problem at the moment is; my 'crew' want to try a wide beam boat for our next trip and that means South. I have a plan to form a second, 'retired' crew who won't need school holidays!
Congratulations on your 'Prop' - we want to see it. Do you have to collect it, is it presented or does it just arrive in the post? Also, it was good to see you so triumphant, nekid men (and woman?) notwithstanding. Well done guys.

Another great canal experience - you really are notching them up! You probably have future plans mapped out, but can I suggest something slightly different - the Fens. This would include the Middle Levels (via River Nene), Denver Sluice (via Salters Lode) and the River Great Ouse up to Bedford. I can confirm it's a great experience, if a little different to the usual canal network.

You suspect the water loss in the lock was because of the poorly maintained lock gates? 🧐
Only recently I found out that the CRT is a non-profit , rather than a sub branch of the UK government services. So they don’t collect dues to filter up to some giant coffer to be mismanaged like happens too often in another country which will remain nameless. Having been introduced to various working parts of the CRT via TH-cam videos by Cruising the Cut, Foxes Afloat and Let’s Explore, I am even more impressed with the CRT. I don’t know how much your dues are, nor how many other craft owners pay CRT fees, nor how many people the CRT employs vs how many CRT Volunteers there are. I don’t know how many facilities for building things like new gates exist. I don’t know how many facilities they maintain , nor the cost of the maintenance. I don’t have a clue. But they can’t remain a non profit if they are making a profit of any significance that doesn’t roll back in to things like gate repair and replacement and such. But I do know non profits, being a founding member of several and being routinely ‘volunteered’ to work on the Executive Councils and insuring things are seen to, rules are established fairly and followed by the leadership and having oversight in the area of fund raising and allocations, I have a healthy respect for an operation of that size and scope. When something like that is neglected, it is almost always due to a lack of funding or staffing and staffing deficiencies are usually a funding issue at the core. I don’t work for the CRT, know or met any member of the CRT or their family or friends. I don’t have a horse in that arena or even a neighboring one. I am just throwing that out for you to consider as I have not been hearing that CRT dues fluctuate or have been steadily rising. And I suspect this could have been left unsaid but I said it nonetheless. Sorry if I offend.
How far was the walk overland, Jo? Is there anything along the top like roads or buildings? And about how much walking do you do on a ‘moving day’. Have you ever worn a device that tracks such things? You seem to walk a great deal, so casually and routinely. I rarely get more in than a mile a day unless I intentionally walk for walking’s sake. I am curious to know and tip my hat even before you answer because I am impressed!
Until next video, stay warm and have fun! R

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

She gets in a good few miles on every cruise, usually around 5-7, but more like 3 when it’s cold and wet... she likes to walk, and George is glad for that!
As for the CRT license fees, that’s actually about 1/4 is their budget, the majority of which comes from rents on land and various government subsidies and corporate donations... which tends to mean that money goes a little more readily to facilities that offer commercial opportunities and / or tourist traffic more than it does to things that only benefit boaters. Lock maintenance is definitely an area where concerns have been raised on an ongoing and increasing basis since the CRT took over from the old British Waterways... I think it’s mainly not an issue of funding so much as back in the day there was more experienced maintenance crew who were paid staff, whereas nowadays a lot of such work is contractors brought in only when things go critical. It’s not us giving them a dig, they’ve developed a bit of a reputation for not getting maintenance of the basic hardware quite right in recent years, though we’d say the general trend is improving. M

Hi guys, that was a great journey. That tunnel ARRGGHH! Not on your Nelly, No WAY! I'm walking over the top with Jo and George. 2+ hours entombed in a leaky tunnel? Not my idea of fun at all.
The Silver Propellor is a great idea to reward people for taking up the challenge and making sure that quieter parts of the network see some traffic. So you have your 20, Congratulations! Now, how many more to go and will you be trying to 'catch them all'? Will you get a certificate or plaque to recognise your achievement? Perhaps a nice pennant to fly off your tiller?
PS: If you were like the Narrowboat Chef crew and flew a flag off your tiller, would it be the Aussie red Ensign, the US flag or something else appropriate?
