I've been a 'Gerber man' since graduating infantry recon in 1996 and owning an E-Z Out and numerous multitools since then. I bought a versafix Pro on April 25 2020 and really liked its versatility vs compact lightweight portability.
Then I took a close look down the blade and noticed the grind was lopsided, about 2mm to one side of a central line. I contacted Gerber through their site and was promised follow up which never arrived, my further 3 emails being ignored. I returned the knife to the retailer, keen to swap it but the grind of the other one in stock was also wonky, and with a very rough honing. Two days later the retailer called me to say they'd opened half a dozen more versafixes at their supply warehouse, finding none had a symmetrical grind, and no two were even the same. I wouldn't mind if it was a NZ$40.00 knife, but this one costs NZ$79.00. I will take the offered refund.
Such a shame, its a great concept to hybrid a survival knife with heavy machete/kukri/parang features and it's a quality piece of steel. If only there was some quality supervision of the final machining at Gerber's Chinese factory.

I have several blades I've never really tried. Just got a hatchet and call axe so brought out a parang and a multi as well as some knives. Was surprised just how well the kukri worked. Took a while to find the sweet spot for chopping but was obvious once I got it. I was mostly playing around with new hatchet so in terms of those uses, it was pretty good as versatile blade. Featuring was great too.
Getting out a keno onion with the blade grinding attachment to get a bit better edge than factory today.
Another great and very intelligent review. Your channel is loaded with valuable info. Keep going. You outclass the other sad channels.
A few yrs back I got my Ontario kukri in 1095 1/4 inch thick for $50 so $40 for a Chinese made Chinese steel Gerber marked machete no thanx but I do like the sheath😁. Don’t worry I still love you 😘🤪. Personally I like that Sp-8 the best.

I actually have a Gerber versafix and I actually really like it. I've used it for cutting brush and batoning and I have no issues with it. I will concede that it does chew up your batoning stick and heaven forbid you get it stuck in a piece of knotted wood. But honestly I love it and have no complaints about it.

My money is on the sp8 all day, an alternative is the ontario sp5 if you want a medium weight chopper that can do double duty as a machete.
They chose that steel to be soft enough to take shock unlike harder stainless steels. And it’s easy to sharpen in the field. And it also doesn’t rust unlike carbon steel. Just something to note. From a design perspective
I don't know. I will not like it if I need to sharpen after a few chops. I would rather go for 8CrMov. I think it just cost cutting. And I din like the handle. Not sure of I could do a looser pinch grip or 3 finger grip when chopping.
No, they chose that steel because eit's the cheapest junk they could find. It has nothing to do woith taking shock. If you want something to take shock well you use spring steel like every other top company out there does. No, it doesn't rust, but unless you're very young and very inexperienced, you know that rusting isn't a problem, even with carbon steel.
The young and inexperienced act like carbon steel turns to rust and dissolves in your hand if you just show it to water. The truth is that carbon steel will, if you know anything at all, develop a patina of black rust which actually protects it from red rust, which is the damaging kind.
Of course, they also know that soft steel doesn't automatically absorb shock. It has to be the right kind of soft steel, which this is NOT, and it absolutely MUST have a differentially tempered edge, which this also does NOT. This is just cheap, junk steel of a cheap, junky knife aimed at the huge crowd of TH-cam beginners.
There's only one reason any company uses steel like this, and that reason is that they found someone who would sell it to them at a couple of cents per pound.
James Ritchie been knife collecting for years bother. No kid. Live in the south. And yes, steel does rust you aren’t careful. Especially with humidity. Folding knives are worse. I had stainless rust after oiling, taking apart, and maintaining blades. I have multiple mora knives I’ve put patinas on. Then it helps, but this products isn’t directed to those who know what me and the smart ass you are know. Eliminates a variable. So check yourself before you go sticking your head up your hole, and speak like there aren’t specific market buyers who are looking for a product like this. 1095 is really bad about rust if you are where I’m from. I will admit it isn’t a big problem for fixed blades, especially if you know anything. But it is a problem and this was Gerbers solution. Cheers man

This holier than thou persona you have is (while well researched) fruitless in the end cause that was a reason the steel chosen was chosen. Do you work for a knife company, are you an engineer? @@hunterglaspell5580 I from SE Asia, living about a mile from the sea. Humidity and salty air even rust chrome plating. Never have 'natura' pertina. Only red rust. Best rust prevention is just plane old constant maintenance. Or use thick wax. Back to topic. I rather get 1075, 1095, L6 steel than this junk steel. Wiping clean in the field will slow down rust. This way easier than to reshapen in the field.
About time for a Kizer review. May I suggest the Kizer Sequoia. A nice EDC fixed blade.

Gerber has never made a product than anyone but a ten year old would buy. Gerber products are all junk, and Kershaw isn't a lot better. But there is no such thing as a good product like any of these. "Knives" like this are for little boys, or adults who can't outgrow little boy fantasies. Trust me, if you carry something like any of these into the wilderness, you will get laughed at, and you should.
You'll also make a fair number of experienced wilderness people afraid to be too close to you because people who carry such things inevitably know very little about knives, and nothing about the wilderness. They're dangerous. But mostly they're just funny, and more than a little pitiable, so they get laughed at and talked about.
It usually happens behind your back, but chances are they'll be some in your face talk, so be ready to put up with it.

Bought one yesterday at Menard's for 30 bucks. Be ready to sharpen it. Bought it more as a camp cleaver . I usually carry a fixed blade my ka bar 1205 a estwing camp hatchet or as. And a folder at camp. Not bad for light work. If I shop I use a ax or hatchet. Not horrible for 30 bucks. If you want a good machete tromatina or a condor. I also collect blades so it will get put into the collection. I think it feels good in the hand. Maybe better as a weapon.

Gerber, Kershaw, CRKT, Benchmade, and Leatherman all have their HQ’s (and a few their factories) in the Portland, OR MSA.
Does anyone know how high the taxes are that they have to deal with? I’ve wondered if that affects their prices or choices of materials used.
Seems like the Kershaw is perhaps the better value here? General feelings on the Kershaw for someone who'd be using it for more casual camping purposes vs. full on outdoor survival mode... What about the longer Kershaw machetes (12, 14, 18)?

The Gerber's actually a nice piece of kit, after you give it a complete regrind. Put a scandivex on it and now works like a light weight champ

Any chance you could review the bare bones hori hori from REI.... I'm really torn on whether it would be a good camping purchase...for $40 with sheath it looks cool but might just be a gimmick/ gardening tool

I hear crmov and I tend to just run away. A few budget spyderco and Kershaw knives are ok with it but it usually means steer clear.
I own the camp 10 and love it.
Just don't let anyone who is actually a woodsman see you use it.

gimmick? It does what it's designed to do. So far, reviews have been positive and i haven't seen or heard of a single one of these failing. It's amazing how so many people are quick to pass judgment on something they don't even own.

@@Canadian_Craftsman Do you have any links? Chipping and rolling is nothing out of ordinary. I chipped and rolled edges on many expensive big blades using them on knotty hard wood. It was standard use. Axes, hatchets can and do chip also. You sharpen them out and keep on working with them. I guess using your faulty logic, every blade that chips and rolls is gimmick, right? I feel like I responded to a 10 year old.
in the UK it's the same price as the Terava Skrama XD or a real Kukri direct from nepal.

The Ontario makes sense for when you need a very strong tool that's also a pry bar.
Kershaw looks ok and seen many good reviews about it. You could look at Cold Steel options also if you want that (Kukri style) re curve. The Gerber is more a parang style where they added some holes and a useless sawback for appeal. It could be interesting without these holes and that 'sawback'. There sure are better and cheaper options.
Not a saw back. Gerber says it is there for "batoning." Supposedly helps to prevent the baton from sliding forward off the blade when striking it.

i did notice a knot in that piece you were splitting with the Gerber, but not in the other pieces. Does the Gerber split those other pieces just as easily as the other 2 machetes? and would the other 2 machetes struggle the same with that knotty piece?
I was actually thinking of saying something similar. I've noticed with my Gerber versafix that if you baton it into a piece of knotted would you are going to have a real time and getting it out. So I just don't baton knotted wood with it.
Yeah, not the best camp knife, but it's great to take hunting, especially if you use a climber stand, since it's good for chopping limbs but light enough to carry easily

When you said 3cr, i actually recoiled in horror. Then there's the cut outs down at the handle.
It's probably good for those thin, leafy branches that are in your path because it's so light and wieldy. I didn't like it when i first saw it, now i like it less, after watching this.
The thing is, it could have been a good tool if it was made properly from the beginning, starting with the steel.
The steel is too be a corrosive alternative to carbon steel. Soft enough to take the impact (unlike harder stainless steels) and won’t rust. And it’s also easier to sharpen in the field
@@hunterglaspell5580 I get that, also i'm not a steel snob, but 7&8cr get a bad rep as it is, so hearing 3cr made me laugh. Maybe they'll bring out a better model if most reviews are like this.
@@hunterglaspell5580 P.S. Sub to KKnives channel, if you aren't already. He has figured out a really interesting thing that happens to steel when it's ground dry on a normal belt, the Rockwell hardness went down, at the thinnest areas of the steel, when he added a water spray device onto the steel he's grinding, this ceased to happen. There's a way now, of testing Rockwell hardness without pressing a diamond into the steel, it's done now by a laser and a small processor which can tell how damaged the carbides and other elements are burnt out and damaged by the heat of the dry grinding.
It's best if you check him out if you haven't already, he explains things way better than i ever could in the YT comments section.👍🏼✌🏼
Gerber may have an Arc Sprayed coating on it.
I had some folders in 3Cr. Could never get them sharp. And even when I got them close, they retained an edge the worst of any steel I have ever seen. I avoid it at all costs. I’ll take 440C or 8Cr any day of the week. Not going anywhere near 3Cr on a blade this big. Especially when you’ve shown us some great alternatives.

Spaniards give the blade near the handle a fine cutting edge the round belly gets a coarse angle to last longer while chopping
I’ve found that on most of gerber’s products I’m not a fan. So I just tend to stir away from the company.

I think alot of gerber's blade grind is pretty bad especially the gerber downrange which was as dull as a butter knife. There are a few exceptions like the strongarm. Also instead of the ontario for comparison i think a CRKT halfachance or chance in hell would've been a better option for comparison
I would’ve never even considered buying the Gerber,as soon as I first seen it I knew it was garbage..besides,who wants ANYTHING in 3Cr?..I must say,the Kershaw Camp 10 is an excellent budget machete though..it’s obviously no ESEE Junglas or Ka Bar/Becker BK9 but a very capable machete at a low price..While that OKC machete is far better than the Gerber,I wouldn’t buy it either because I’m not a fan of the blade shape..it’s like a sheepsfoot machete and that just doesn’t work for me as I need some type of a tip

Hello, hope all's well with everyone/thing! Enjoy your vids... I'm wondering, could those issues w/the Gerber be something else than poor design - like "operator error-since I know anyone can be wrong"? To me, you had the "child" too far back, not leaving enough forward (hitting end) when batoning. Complaining about "it chewed up", well-could it be that with "that child you should've chosen a DRIER baton piece of wood"? To me, that would've been a better idea. PLUS WHICH, "anyone who goes out in the woods w/ONLY ONE KNIFE IS SETTING THEMSELVES UP FOR FAILURE"! Because NO KNIFE-is a "DO IT ALL KNIFE", and MOST "collectors" DON'T KNOW THAT-and are ignorant enough to believe anything from anyone. Those types will use the term "blood groove" - which honestly, is nothing short of idiot-speak!! It was the ONLY way mfg's. (back then) had of lightning up their heavier blades -PERIOD(since life depended on them)! Finally, when "any tool" is misused (that means-for ANY TASK it wasn't DESIGNED for) then it's NOT FAIR to then malign its performance!! Doesn't that make sense? Just sayin'. Since Gerber fired that Andrew guy who used to do all their product marketing back in 2015, the company came back to their shitty chinese stuff... They used to make the Propel, Strongarm, Ghoststrike and so on. Now that hipster dude tried to make their new blades look like they are high quality and fails in every video.

Fiskars Brush Axe would be a way better choice than this Gerber, same company and around the same price. I feel like the demographic for this blade is for someone that's wanting to get into camping and hiking goes and buys a bunch of gear and rarely ever if never uses any of it.
