I picked one up last month and finally had the chance today to beat it up. My mom wanted a 12 foot mimosa tree removed as well as a couple of tree-like growths from her front yard.
I batoned the shit out of this Gerber shaving down the trunk as it had a much larger diameter than the length of my sawzall blade and I didn't feel like gettiing a longer blade or borrowing a chainsaw. I also used it for normal chopping operations like trimming small branches off of other trees, chopping through roots, shaving down the sides of homemade spears just because I felt like making homemade spears. I also use the Gerber and my Benchmade mini grip to strip the bark from any limbs nearby to see how after the batoning and chopping it would perform for more detailed work as a cutting instrument. It was fantastic! Admittedly though, I used the mini grip for more of the bark removal just because I'm so stoked to finally have a benchmade, but after everything it went through the blade never deformed and never chipped, and it didn't dull significantly enough to require anything more than a brief touch up. These issues were a concern for me because I know that the steel is not top shelf, but then again Gerber is not asking top shelf money either. For everything I used it for today and any moderate use its seen in the last 3 weeks, it's performed flawlessly and it's one of the best buys I've made.
    Couldn't be happier with it.

Just got the red handle pro version. Very happy with it. It’s quite nice for general hiking and camping. I’m sure the hardcore “bushies” just can’t be happy with the fact that it doesn’t do all things perfectly. Nothing will ever do All things perfectly. But it does do some things just fine.

I Like how light it is and it actually baton'd better than I thought it would.
Being able to strike sparks with a fero is a plus. Yers I would purchase it as a back up to a heavier chopper.
Thanks for the review Stay safe there!

Will buy the Versafix Pro for its quick release sheath.
Wanted for self-defense vs man & beast.

I wish more companies would do sheaths like this, the snap in from the side design

Looks like a nice hiking short machete. Used a marbles Bowie machete for years as no longer than 10" blade. Able to make shelter frames and bust up junk fire wood. Very light which was why it was with me 90% of the time.

I’m late to the party but just found these on amazon today for $22, just what I was looking for.

I've been a 'Gerber man' since being graduating infantry recon in 1996 and owning an EZ-Out and numerous multitools since then. I bought a versafix Pro on April 25 2020 and really liked it for its versatility vs compact lightweight portability.
Then I took a close look down the blade and noticed the grind was lopsided, about 2mm to one side of a central line. I contacted Gerber through their site and was promised follow up which never arrived, my further 3 emails being ignored. I returned the knife to the retailer, keen to swap it but the grind of the other one in stock was also wonky, and with a very rough honing. Two days later the retailer called me to say they'd opened half a dozen more versafixes at their supply warehouse, finding none had a symmetrical grind, and no two were even the same. I wouldn't mind if it was a NZ$40.00 knife, but this one costs NZ$79.00. I took the offered refund.
Such a shame, its a great concept to hybrid a survival knife with heavy machete/kukri/parang features and it's a fair quality piece of steel. If only there was some quality supervision of the final machining at Gerber's Chinese factory, and some customer service to a loyal user of 24 years.
    -No longer a gerber man.

Hmm probably a bad batch. Happens all to often these day with many reputable brands. Mine seems ok.

I hope so, and I'm on the lookout for a good new one. But this doesn't excuse Gerbers disregard for fostering customer relations, ignoring a total of 5 emails now, including one asking them to select a quality checked versafix for me to buy.

Wouldn't buy it. Just use a small hatchet and a decent fixed blade.
