My family has been using saddles for hunting around 30 years. They're a huge benefit when doing deer drives! If a hunter, on stand, can get up in a tree quickly and quietly he/she can see the deer coming and shoot safely at a downward angle. Thanks for another great video!
Would love to see you guys do a video getting in a tree with this start to finish. Like walk up to the tree and go. Having a hard time visualizing how you are getting up with it. Thanks!
I love that these guys love what they do so much that they're more focused on getting information out about the method than they are about selling their product. Seriously.... how many times did they mention the mantis?
Guys, saddle hunting is it! Bought a predator platform last month - thanks Greg for fast tracking it. Made my own saddle from a sit drag. All my other - bridge, tree tether, lineman's made from stock rope etc. Used my old deer-me hang-on steps to get up the tree. Everything fits inside a day pack for ultimate run-n-gun. First day in new area(public) up a tree killed an AL hog. Killed 10 point buck in same area different tree the next day. First sit was over six hours. Didn't even feel it. Thanks guys from Tethrd and hunting public - you guys rock! Saddle hunting has changed my whole approach to hunting now. I love it!
You guys have sold me on trying the saddle thing. However, you must write me a note to give my wife explaining why I have to spend this money on a new setup.
Great info on the saddle stand. I started bow hunting in 1983 just climbing trees and not tied off or if i got to hi would use my rope i pulled my bow up with and tie off with that. Think i may invest in one of these and try it out. Just a other tool to use to be mobile. I wonder why i'm not dead either just a couple of close calls though. Being wedged up in tree limbs for many hour isn't comfortable either. Thanks again for the info.
I've been saddle hunting for a couple of years now and I love it. As you say the options vs tree stands are huge. What I've seen on FB-groups is that SRT is growing. I as well as the tethrd took the best parts from arborist climbing and rock climbing and put a system together and I think the rope has a big advantage vs sticks. Together with the saddle it's lightweight and silent. Have you tried it? Good episode, you're my favorite youtube channel :)
Been on the fence about saddle hunting for about a year or so after reading John Eberhart books. Also, this past hunting season I've been sitting in my comfy summit, thinking If I could be in that tree over there, I would be better off!! Thanks for the video, going to pull the trigger and get one this year.
You’ll spend as much time hunting trees with a saddle as you will with any other stand. You may be able to climb any tree with a saddle, that don’t mean you can hunt from it ….
@@ArkansasPublicHunts I bought a mantis. I dont see myself ever going back. I picked up a back band with it, after trying different spots I use it just below the saddle on my upper legs for a touch of extra support. The mantis seems like a minimalist saddle I may try a two panel or flex style saddle. But in general I love it so far.
@@B.r.i.a.n.1 awesome man! Thanks for the insight! I’m about to take the plunge and grab a phantom! Can’t wait to get in it! I think it’ll be a real game changer. Good luck out there man!
Been on the fence about the saddle. I've been a tree stand hunter for 20 years. The land I hunt has lots of small trees on it. Also the deer come from all over! Got caught off guard this year by a big buck. Couldn't get positioned in the stand for shot. This would have helped!! I'm sold on it! Thanks guys!! Keep up the great video!
I'm a public land hunter myself. I will absolutely be purchasing one next season. Dont think my shoulders can handle another season carrying this stand around
Great information!! I have already decided to saddle hunt this next year, i have watch a ton of videos on this style of hunting and cant wait to get mine this spring.
This funny in some ways... my family and I have been hunting out of tree saddles for 15 years. To a lot of people this seems like a "new"way of hunting but its not. Man the tree saddle is awesome and I have multiple customized methods. The platform been using one for 12 years. I built it with parts from a Muddy stand the founding owner of muddy gave to me. Good luck everyone this season.
For those who are interested in getting a Tethrd specific saddle, just be aware that the backorder time is about 6 weeks. That means this isn't something you want to put off until September if you're expecting to get into a tree with a saddle on opening day. I have one more week until I get mine delivered and can play around with it. Can't wait.
@@G2Outdoors Sorry if this came off as a slam in any fashion, it wasn't intended. After doing a lot of research I still went with Tethrd happily even knowing about the wait. I'm exactly the guy you were talking about in the video. New to hunting, was debating between hang ons and saddle. You've convinced me. Can't wait for it to arrive in the mail next week or two. By any chance is the stuff you're working on in the pipeline improvements/commercial production of aiders, knaiders, and swaiders? Cause that'd be pretty sweet.
Also, in a hang on, I had a limb at shoulder height and it completely eliminated a behind the tree shot. I absolutely could not draw! One of those things that is easy to overlook when hanging.
I did single rope technique saddle hunting and it was hard. Tried it 3 times and came down every time. My point is practice. I’m starting to practice now. I want to be ready this season.
I would love the light weight system to carry in but i dont think i can stand very long in one spot, I have bad knees and bad back so without being able to sit down i think id make it an hour then be in to much pain and move to much after that. I know you said its not bad on your legs but is it still more weight on your legs than sitting, i know your sitting in a saddle but still has to be some pressure on your knees ?
Send me 1 to try out.... ran into the same issue as the guy who asked about the deer being 60 yards away...I tried to move but having only a climber I was extremely limited to my tree choices
One thing about saddles you see on you tube - everyone is always in a straight vertical tree. Saddles become a MAJOR PITA once the tree has some lean. One of the advantages totted by saddle hunters is the ability to work your way around the tree.... But try that on a tree with some lean.... So in that regard, they're almost as limited as a climber. Also when the tree has some lean, then you can only set up on the one side of the tree that leans away from you. So in that regard - you're much more limited than a stand. Especially a hang on stand like the Lone Wolf. Since I prefer hunting deer as opposed to hunting trees, than the Lone Wolf Assault w/ sticks is the system for me. But if you're deer woods are mostly straight vertical trees than maybe a saddle could work for you.
Question about the knee pads I see people wearing. Knees get tired of being locked and you relax into the tree and rest your knees against it. Just more info on that wanted
Been looking into trying one of these, as much as i move around i hate carrying tree stands with me when i am 2+ miles into the wild. a saddle seems much less bulky and heavy to carry around all day.
What state do you hunt where you have to walk that far? Here in Michigan we have to go way up north to find places that big with no roads. What if you shoot a deer? I'd have a heart attack trying to drag a deer that far.
Great video! I'm seriously going to give these a try this year. How is it for self filming? Have any of you done any selling filming in the saddle yet and any advice on the set up? Also, what climbing tools are you using to get up the tree that can lessen the load carrying in (ie. Climbing steps, stick, etc.)?
I didnt hunt out of my climber for two years when the top half slipped descending and i almost went over the side. Scared the piss out of me. I want to try this saddle hunting.
A little target practice would had helped this would had helped. Vids of what they were talking about. You and zak explaining this subject and videoing this would be awesome
You mean the platform? Yeah you could, I saw one video where the person put a hunting tack on where the tether needs to be for coming back at a different time.
I also hunt in N. minnesota. Been a saddle hunter since the early eighties. I use mine with a heater body suit. I can deal with any cold, windy conditions. Saddles open up so many possibilities. Get one and you will never look back.
This was my first year in a saddle. Usually I would wear a heater body suit, but don't feel like modifying it just yet. I hunted in -20 degree weather a couple weeks ago all bundled up. Merino wool base layer, and wool pants, fleece flannel shirt, wind stopper wool sweater, wool jacket. Put hand/body warmers on my chest and kidneys. Balaclava and warm hat. I surprisingly pretty warm. No complaints. I was on the fence between and medium and large saddle. Got the large Mantis and I'm happy I had a little bit of extra room. A medium probably would've worked just fine though.
I don't understand why I can't just use the top of my sticks as a platform. I bought a saddle but I'm not spending 200 on a platform unless I can't make it work
A lot of hunters find saddles are a great option for back pain. I have degenerative disk disease (active duty army) and I experience zero back pain in my saddle.
I have a bad back, and I am more comfortable in a saddle than a treestand.....I have the mantis saddle and love it!.....it's way more comfortable than my Trophyline tree saddle that I have used over the years.....I will probably end up buying another one.
It's a tool in the tool belt, but it's not the best for all situations. For example, if you need to be in a tree with a 10 degree lean, a Saddle is pretty much useless. Even if you set up on the part of the tree leaning away, you can't go around the tree without basically falling to the low side and then struggling to climb back to the high side. In that situation, a stand is the best tool. There are other situations where a stand is better as well.
Spending this season hunting from a saddle I’ve found I’ve wasted far more time looking for the right tree , or getting in a tree and realizing this is useless. It’s neat , it’s light and very mobile , but I can’t say it’s the best form of hunting I’ve used . Personally I like the mobile lock on method the best I find it to be the best all around from tree size to the ability to shoot …. But weight and bulk is the one thing that’s unavoidable with a stand .
In the upcoming years I plan on hunting public out of state. The saddle seems like a good idea, but I'm hung up on one thing everyone I see who saddle hunts doesn't look like me lol. By that I'm saying I'm a 300+ pound man might just be over thinking it, but I know now that even most treestands have a weight limit what's the deal with these saddles?

Great product and tool for a hunter. Unfortunately, $600+ is far too expensive and that doesn’t include climbing sticks. Yea, can get started cheaper and add stuff as time goes by. Prices will have to come down before I would do this, way down.
