Banning any more drilling permits in NZ will make 0 difference to global emissions, world demand remains exactly the same ,in fact its growing. The exploration companies have simply packed up, taken their funds and equipment and gone to other countries to drill. The world is still hopelessly dependent on fossel fuels. Generating power with your own gas from a pipeline is far more efficient than importing coal and LNG. I'm all for rooftop solar however it's a long long way from generating enough to support industries like steel mills, dairy, pulp and paper to name a few, there are a lot of days when the sun doesn't shine in NZ. We could just kiss all these industries goodbye and loose thousands of jobs and billions in revenue, once again demand for these products would remain the same or grow as population increases and other countries would just increase their production to fulfill the demand. I'm all for clean green energy and I would love to see more of it however the day we make enough of it to replace fossil fuels completely is a long away if ever. The world is still hopelessly dependent on fossil fuels and I don't see why we should destroy our small fragile economy to make a token gesture to the environment while industrial giants like China and USA have a carbon footprint thousands of times worse than us and that's not likely to change in the next few decades.

I worked for Air NZ from 1989 to 1991. Low wage to start and not a single pay rise for cost of living or promotion. The place just fell apart. Rob Morrison is no friend of mine. He is a ruthless capitalist and a classic corporate raider. The NZ Gordon Geeko if ever I saw one. Don't fooled by his amiable grand-dad appearance. This man is a shark who is only interested in a profit at any cost. Because of him I left NZ for European where I earned a massively higher income. I was part of the NZ brain drain.

@@Gumden Maddy said in the interview that he advised NZ on their 1989 privatisation, and no doubt took a hefty consult's fee for doing so, whilst at the same telling Air NZ to slash numbers by stopping all pay rises and freezing promotions and then on Xmas Eve 1989 carry out a mass slaughter of staff by literally terminating all the management, to create only 4 layers in NZ from cleaner to CEO. This meant that a lowly supervisor overnight became a department manager, without a pay rise, going from having responsibility for example 12 staff to hundreds.

The current wholesale electricity price is so high (at over $800/MWh, or 80c/kw-hr) - it would be cheaper to run a generator on petrol - paying road tax in the per litre price to-boot. Now that's saying something (ain't right). Obviously diesel would be cheaper again. These cost calcs allows for the inefficiencies of the petrol/diesel generator...

@@dynamo1796 24 years in IT here, and I found it an excellent question. Jason Boyes talked a lot about AI, but different types of AI need different processing units. GPUs are heavily used for training deep learning models as they excel at parallel processing, which allows them to handle many tasks simultaneously. They're commonly used in tasks like training neural networks, image and video processing, and large-scale data analysis. They significantly speed up the training process of AI models compared to CPUs. GPUs are ideal for the large-scale matrix and vector operations required in AI computations. CPUs, on the other hand, are general-purpose processors that handle a wide range of tasks, including running operating systems, managing memory, and performing sequential processing tasks. CPUs are often used for tasks that require complex logic, lower amounts of parallelism, or when power efficiency is more critical. CPUs are used for running AI inference tasks, especially when the model has already been trained, and for tasks where the data size or complexity doesn't justify the use of GPUs. This question alone tells us what they're using the data centre for, and potentially who the customer base is at this moment in time.

You guys see the money you can make. We just see all the power and water that will be plundered by your company to run services that will take more jobs from kiwis. Much like a parasite.

Great topic, thanks for that coverage. I'm a bit concern with the power consumption and cooling system. Our power production is struggling to keep up with the demand. So why Auckland? South of south island would have been more judicious for cooling efficiency and therefore more power efficient. Also rather than relying on the grid only, (generators are just a backup) a CDC in the countryside could partially generate its own power through wind-turbines and solar.

The types of workloads being put on these data centres tends to be quite latency sensitive, so they cite the data centres near to the population who would be using them. In addition, Auckland is where the majority of NZ's international and domestic connectivity converges - which makes it easier to hook them up to good internet connectivity. The southland data centre ideas proposed by a few companies would more be about less latency sensitive workloads. Think AI model training, data analytics/warehousing, data archiving etc.

Wind turbines and solar would not put out a high enough level of power for such a complex and it would be too intermittent anyway. There needs to be backup alternatives to the way IT systems operate anyway proven by the Crowdstrike IT crash that crippled most of the world.
