I remember watching this on TV as a teen, aged 17, and getting quite emotional. For some reason this tune made me feel a surge of love, maybe for my country it's hard to say.
With few natural resources, not much land, a manufacturing sector coming back from the dead, and a now bankrupt financial services industry, what has the UK got to offer the world? This. Culture, creativity, ideas, inventiveness. That's why we need the BBC.
It is my birthday today. It was the perfect day spent with my daughter. She made me forget myself. I’m so glad I spent it with her. I love her so much 🙌🏽 I have reaped what I sowed with her.
The original Lou Reed version is one of those that always make me cry. Like Bowie's, "Heroes." Both are my go to for when I need a good cry. This rendition of, "Perfect Day," is stunning. I only just discovered it a couple of days ago. Gobsmack.

Was completely mesmerised by it all but I didn't know what it was for, why it was on, it was a complete surprise. There had been no mention of it being made by the BBC or other press, it just appeared out of nowhere. Was very original at the time. I bought the single. David Bowie's voice is so dreamy...esp the line 'You make me forget myself'...what a beautiful sound.
I was the same. It came on and I was mesmerised. Bought the CD single as soon as it came out. They hadn't intended to actually release it, but the demand was so strong they had no choice. All the artists agreed to donate their royalties to charity as well.
I have to agree with you! He's just so debonair and charismatic - the camera loves him, and even within 4 seconds or whatever he manages to project feeling and something interesting in his delivery. What a talented guy. Gone too soon for sure.
My fave bits of this that give me proper chills are David Bowie's "You make me forget myself" and Emmylou Harris's "you just keep me hanging on" followed by that awesome sax (?) solo ..... Just wow! This version just makes me so happy :)

Makes me feel old seeing this , but at the same time takes me back to a time an age and those mid - late 90's summers
I don’t think anyone has ever matched David Bowie in the last 100 years, he’s done so much and given the world so much through music and otherwise. He was so intelligent too, he was ahead of the critics and knew talent when he saw it, especially when it was being wasted. He tamed iggy pop and got Lou Reed mainstream during a time when they were falling apart.

Honestly he did have a few misses too. Or at least things I did not care for. But overall - holy f@#king Ch1rst! My favourite artist by far in any genres. As an artist, you have to be willing to take risks. That means a few failures. But Bowie had more than his fair share of successes. Great intellect, great artist, and great human being. The world was a richer place with him in it and we should be grateful.
This is genuinely astonishing. Getting so many true A-list musicians to participate is amazing, and the point the BBC was making is that it is the only organization which could do that. Don't know whether that's true, but I've yet to see anyone else do the equivalent. And as for the execution - it's not an obvious choice of song but it lends itself so well to so many styles and it's clear that all the performers were really giving it 100%. Thanks BBC.
Everyone keeps commenting about Mick Ronson and I just want to say, what an amazingly talented guy, he really contributed SO much to Bowie's early success and from the comments, apparently to the success of this album too. He is definitely not valued enough, except by those who know eg certain Bowie fans. He was fantastic. It's a tragedy that he died so young.
Many years later and there’s something in this song that moves me, something about so many great people coming together for one perfect moment in time. The words of the song and the video capture the happiness but also the bittersweet sadness - everything is great but like all things nothing lasts forever - for one day things can be truly special and you can be the best person you can be. I think it reminds me of my childhood too as I remember it being on every evening on the BBC. Most group songs with many singers are feel-good and up-beat and showy but this song feels really genuine and sombre - it’s simply a group of great people working together to give us something perfect…

I still love this!!! So they're not all to my taste, but just having such a diverse array of musical talent come together is staggering. It's a great song, and a great cover, and really does offer something for every taste- thankfully it was released before autotune became the norm and they refrained from having any of the sections "rapped" instead of sung. This was the last good thing the BBC did! Come on Beeb, prove me wrong and do it again!
I remember when this was released. I remember the musical diversity represented. I felt the world was changing, because of this kind of thing. It didn’t. I don't know what it is about the way he sings "you made me forget myself", but it gets me.

Grande pezzo.....uno di quei capolavori che riascolteremo ancora tra 20 anni.....grazie
I love dr. John's voice! Awesome!
I have no idea why I knew this version. It's stuck in my head from childhood somehow, and I even knew some of the artists. Amazing being able to find a curiosity like this with just a quick YT search. Thanks alot sir.
Parabéns á Produção da BBC por esta música genial.
Brilliant song, great musician, genuine talent - you leave us the poorer by your passing. RIP
Haha yeah no rapping 😂
I knew it was missing something. A little segment in the middle by Dizzy Rascal! 😆
I remember when this was released. I remember the musical diversity represented. I felt the world was changing, because of this kind of thing. It didn’t. But it reminded me why the BBC was so respected…a respect I have lost since this. Unperfect days. I’m sorry to say this. And look at ALL the legends together in one place here. I say forget the politics, forget the BBC, just enjoy it. I still do on that level.
Love this song. So simple, so beautiful...
