And the 2nd game is childs play compared to the original. The original Postal had you play a crazy person where the sole goal was to kill as many bystanders as possible. Killing innocents was the mission, not some extra thing you could do. It ended in a level at a school. Yes, Postal 1 ended with a School Shooting level.
9 months late but uhh... about that first Postal game, it should be clarified that the final level, which takes places in a school, ISN'T actually a playable level and you can't kill any children. It just leads to the ending credits. Also, the Redux version of the game straight up changed the final level to not include a school. Just thought that was important to put in, since RWS themselves have stated multiple times that for all the edginess of the franchise, even they draw the line at harming children.
Not gonna lie, the way Running With Scissors were so honest about Postal III In the website of the freaking game is a bit surreal. But at the same time, I wish more Companies could be as honest as they were about Postal III.
They say they're not making any money from it, though. So I don't know what incentive they have to get customers to buy it, play it, and hate it -- this seems like sane brand management more than anything commendable.
@Baron o Spirals It really does help contextualize the 2nd game's sense of humor more than you can already tell from the game, its offensive as all hell but its not coming from a place of malicious intent but more an equal opportunity mockery of absurdist stereotypes that is using shock value to push it to an even more extreme form of absurdist. It seperates it alot from stuff like the hatred people which some developers might be actual nazis.
By that logic every company that was bought off by EA needs a banner that says “under the EA banner” just so people know they’re not making bad games on purpose
My uncle (Jon "Toploader" Merchant) was project lead on Paradise Lost. Very proud of him. He was originally one of the developers of Eternal Damnation, a fan expansion which was included with the Postal Fudge Pack. He eventually got hired by RWS after working for them for free for ages and now he's that high up! I stayed with him for a couple weeks in college and got to work on Paradise Lost post-launch as QA and they let me go in and fix some of the problems I found myself. Coolest experience of my life so far.
I'm from Russia and played this halfassed abomination, this games jokes sucks even for native russian language speaker and Civvies review is only tip of an iceberg, that crap hits hardly if you can understand signs and writings with all those posters on walls

They updated postal 2 like 2 years ago to parody lootboxes which advetised modders in their community. They have done a ton more to prove again and again that they vaule their community.

Trashmasters/Akella refused to give away the source code, what they have was all in Russian and even if they did somehow manage to make a good version of Postal 3, RWS wouldn't get shit out of it. It's like Blood 2. It just didn't make sense to make it better when they could have spent that time doing anything else...like Paradise Lost.

The reverse can also be true, see Heroes 6's development by a Hungarian team, and how it was pretty much sabotaged by Ubisoft, who couldn't give less crap about the franchise.
I bought this game in the small window it was on steam back when and I played it throughly. I got all the endings, tried every story option, and logged a few hours in the sandbox. And with that expertise, I can say this; it was "playable". It was buggy and unfinished, but it functioned enough to play it. Whether it was OK or terrible I leave up to others to decide for themselves, cuz I simply didn't invest myself that way. I just wanted to play it as a curiosity and for that I was satisfied with it. If you want to and can find it, it's worth the play for the curiosity. You can do worse.
Postal 4: No Regerts Early Access feels like a solid return to the Postal 2 formula and that's a very good thing, just needs time to integrate features and polish, but they're making very solid progress.
Can we just acknowledge the irony that a franchise about mass murder named after the craze of USPS mass murders are both 'dying a slow death' in this day and age. In a few years, Matt might need to explain what the postal service was before talking about Postal 4...
I'd love to see you take a go at Alone In the Dark (2008) A game which was shuffled between developers by a dying Atari who was franticly selling off studios to stay afloat before finally resting on the only one they couldn't shift - Eden games, a studio which had a history exclusively in Racing games... for a survival horror game with a bunch of gimmicks related to fire spreading and item crafting The game came out a mess and was predictably panned, to which Atari decided to try and sue anyone who publihsed reviews in an unfavourable light
I can appreciate Running with Scissors warning customers not to buy Postal 3 *and* releasing an expansion as an apology. That might as well be the equivalent of attaining studio sainthood or something.
I hope not. It's not really an interesting story. A developer has a good idea, gets some early hype, and aggressively fails to see it through. The only exciting part is all the drama, but it's basically all just cringeworthy, childish crap. It's kind of just sad and lame, and, worst of all, simply explaining it all would make it look like Matt was making fun of ydev.

And with DrApeis (Love Letter Dev) getting exposed too (he hasn't done CBT levels of bad as far as i've seen before buggering off from the drama), i really stopped caring about it anymore. Postal 3 is easily one of my personal favorite stories of failure in gaming, right behind DNF. Even though I'd call myself a fan of the franchise, the games have never been *good* per se (even Postal 2 was a broken mess for a long, long time), so the bar wasn't exactly high for P3 to reach. "Keep your expectations in check and embrace the jank" is almost the series motto, and Akella *still* managed to drop the ball beyond all reason. That's incredible. And RWS handled the situation perfectly: Stayed on brand as the Troma of gaming while buying a ton of goodwill from their fans by openly disowning P3, and even being kinda classy about it by not blaming the individual devs who were working under impossible circumstances. Also: Yay Civvie!
I really like the character design of P3 Dude, especially the trench coat having a bit of a Colonial-era detail. Shame that it's the last thing we'll see thanks to Russia's market crashes.
my fav thing about postal in general is that the devs are so chill that they mock 3rd one for being bad, not only on the site even postal 2 itself has some references (outside of the expansion) saying its horrible and to not buy postal III

I love how Germany and other countries freaked out and banned the game, and meanwhile in Poland we got a fully dubbed full release and an anniversary edition with extras later on. Despite spending many hours of my childhood pissing on burned corpses I've yet to kill someone.
Given how this came out right in the middle of a massive school shooting panic sweeping Germany with a then just-recent tightening of the USK's and the BPjM's (basically the two entities that oversee anything related to video game ratings here) abilities to ban games for their content. In Postal's (II) case, I'd reckon a lot of it has to do with an addition to §14 of German Youth Protection Law that outlaws any game where "killing is a goal in and of itself" ("Töten zum Selbstzweck"). So yeah.

I picked up Postal 4, but I haven't actually tried it out yet, which may be for the best as the last couple of updates to it were pretty huge. I have not and will not play Postal 3. Jesus christ.
I played postal 3 many years ago, i wasn't too disappointed imho, yeah it had some bugs but i really enjoyed it, had some good humor and the acting was pretty nice.
I remember an ooold video of a TH-camr so excited for Postal 3's release, he didn't wait for the international and just bought it in russian as soon as it came out. Fucking hype man. Never ceases to amaze me.
They made Zach Ward a boss in the expansion of 2? OK that's cute. For those not in the know, Zach Ward starred in the Uwe Boll movie adaptation of Postal. Wonder if he voiced himself?
This game only got two things right, and that's the art direction and soundtrack, they were really good. I'd love to see P3 Dude as a selectable model in Postal 4.
Agreed, it looks uncharacteristically good for a Postal game, I really love the half-cartoony look it went for, source is the perfect engine for that type of vibe. With the actual dude model, I honestly think they made him too attractive in 3 lmao, the nasty greasy looking trailer trash dude in 2 was perfect, just remake it.
Also I had the opportunity to actually interview Mike J late last year for the site I write for. Really cool dude, super chill and super nice. I got a lot of respect for RWS
Postal is one of my favorite game franchises, and I even got a chance to talk to Mike J, who's a really genuine guy. I'd recommend a video on Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, as it's launch was disastrous, but the game got much better.
It’s sad how this game had potential, but then a market crash had to happen. At least RWS knew this game was planned for disaster and decided they didn’t want something so god awful to be on their website. They don’t even want you to pirate it, not because that’s illegal, but because it’s a scam even if you did pirate it.

Can I just say this video is the reason one of my friends gifted me P3 on Steam so I genuinely fucking played it. I actually kinda enjoyed it, but after getting to the final boss, the poor thing won't let me progress further and nonstop crashes. I've given up after trying like 30 fuckin times, I got a better run through 99% of the game than others so I do appreciate that, but not being able to chug through that 1% is pure hell to me. Just play P4's demo
It's so weird that after all this time, not only RWS put the game back on Steam, they're also working on to fix the game as much as they can. That's worth some praise.

To be honest, I’ve never heard of “Postal” before, but this was interesting, especially since it’s development turned into a catastrophe due to 2007-2008 Financial Crisis. I wouldn’t be surprised if we (in the near future) get a Wha Happun on a game that had a development cycle similar to Postal III, where it reportedly went smoothly until it didn’t, this time due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which ends up resulting in the game becoming an unpolished mess.
Could do Saints row (2022),sure not every problem could be explained by covid,but based on what MrSaintsGodzilla said about what he saw in 2019 being promising it is clear that the game was meant to be much more ambitious.We will probably find out more once his NDA ends

My favorite part of RWS is that I think at this point they recognize that they can't top Postal 2. They fully embrace the negative reviews Postal 4 got (while still being quick to pretend 3 doesn't exist), which is hilarious to me.

I'd love to see you take a go at Alone In the Dark (2008) A game which was shuffled between developers by a dying Atari who was franticly selling off studios to stay afloat before finally resting on the only one they couldn't shift - Eden games, a studio which had a history exclusively in Racing games... for a survival horror game with a bunch of gimmicks related to fire spreading and item crafting
The game came out a mess and was predictably panned, to which Atari decided to try and sue anyone who publihsed reviews in an unfavourable light
I can appreciate Running with Scissors warning customers not to buy Postal 3 *and* releasing an expansion as an apology. That might as well be the equivalent of attaining studio sainthood or something.

I have a feeling that Yandere Simulator is going to show up in an episode of What Happened at some point. I just know it.
I hope not. It's not really an interesting story. A developer has a good idea, gets some early hype, and aggressively fails to see it through. The only exciting part is all the drama, but it's basically all just cringeworthy, childish crap. It's kind of just sad and lame, and, worst of all, simply explaining it all would make it look like Matt was making fun of ydev.

This drama nowadays is a clusterfuck, all sides are basically assholes at this point, Sleuth was exposed for lying about the copyright strikes to make himself the victim. And with DrApeis (Love Letter Dev) getting exposed too (he hasn't done CBT levels of bad as far as i've seen before buggering off from the drama), i really stopped caring about it anymore.
Can anyone give me a recap of what has happened now? Because it looks like either side is gonna try to twist it. (YandereDev still is bad)

Postal 3 is easily one of my personal favorite stories of failure in gaming, right behind DNF. Even though I'd call myself a fan of the franchise, the games have never been *good* per se (even Postal 2 was a broken mess for a long, long time), so the bar wasn't exactly high for P3 to reach. "Keep your expectations in check and embrace the jank" is almost the series motto, and Akella *still* managed to drop the ball beyond all reason. That's incredible. And RWS handled the situation perfectly: Stayed on brand as the Troma of gaming while buying a ton of goodwill from their fans by openly disowning P3, and even being kinda classy about it by not blaming the individual devs who were working under impossible circumstances.
Also: Yay Civvie!
I really like the character design of P3 Dude, especially the trench coat having a bit of a Colonial-era detail. Shame that it's the last thing we'll see thanks to Russia's market crashes.

I love how Germany and other countries freaked out and banned the game, and meanwhile in Poland we got a fully dubbed full release and an anniversary edition with extras later on. Despite spending many hours of my childhood pissing on burned corpses I've yet to kill someone.
Given how this came out right in the middle of a massive school shooting panic sweeping Germany with a then just-recent tightening of the USK's and the BPjM's (basically the two entities that oversee anything related to video game ratings here) abilities to ban games for their content. In Postal's (II) case, I'd reckon a lot of it has to do with an addition to §14 of German Youth Protection Law that outlaws any game where "killing is a goal in and of itself" ("Töten zum Selbstzweck"). So yeah.

I picked up Postal 4, but I haven't actually tried it out yet, which may be for the best as the last couple of updates to it were pretty huge.

I played postal 3 many years ago, i wasn't too disappointed imho, yeah it had some bugs but i really enjoyed it, had some good humor and the acting was pretty nice.
I remember an ooold video of a TH-camr so excited for Postal 3's release, he didn't wait for the international and just bought it in russian as soon as it came out.

Agreed, it looks uncharacteristically good for a Postal game, I really love the half-cartoony look it went for, source is the perfect engine for that type of vibe. With the actual dude model, I honestly think they made him too attractive in 3 lmao, the nasty greasy looking trailer trash dude in 2 was perfect, just remake it.

This game is the epitome of what happens when you make game devs go postal and then ask them to create a game.
Also I had the opportunity to actually interview Mike J late last year for the site I write for. Really cool dude, super chill and super nice. I got a lot of respect for RWS
Postal is one of my favorite game franchises, and I even got a chance to talk to Mike J, who's a really genuine guy.
I'd recommend a video on Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, as it's launch was disastrous, but the game got much better.

At least RWS knew this game was planned for disaster and decided they didn’t want something so god awful to be on their website. They don’t even want you to pirate it, not because that’s illegal, but because it’s a scam even if you did pirate it.
The funniest thing I've ever heard from a game developer and I love running with Scissors for this they've been asked a bunch of times how can I get postal 3 in this country that banned it and they'll are we said just pirate it we don't give a shit

Can I just say this video is the reason one of my friends gifted me P3 on Steam so I genuinely fucking played it. I actually kinda enjoyed it, but after getting to the final boss, the poor thing won't let me progress further and nonstop crashes. I've given up after trying like 30 fuckin times, I got a better run through 99% of the game than others so I do appreciate that, but not being able to chug through that 1% is pure hell to me. Just play P4's demo
Ironically the way you present the Postal 3 footage makes it look like a chaotic, fun game. It's chaotic, but it's not really fun at all. =P

I love that they decided to save the franchise by keeping P3 somewhat canonical, as the coma dream explained in Paradise lost.
To be honest, I’ve never heard of “Postal” before, but this was interesting, especially since it’s development turned into a catastrophe due to 2007-2008 Financial Crisis. I wouldn’t be surprised if we (in the near future) get a Wha Happun on a game that had a development cycle similar to Postal III, where it reportedly went smoothly until it didn’t, this time due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which ends up resulting in the game becoming an unpolished mess.

My favorite part of RWS is that I think at this point they recognize that they can't top Postal 2. They fully embrace the negative reviews Postal 4 got (while still being quick to pretend 3 doesn't exist), which is hilarious to me.
