The moment Gosling Lodge comes into view as you round the corner of the gravel track, you start to relax. A pocket of trees screen the cabin and its pond from view, leaving you alone with the meadow and the hills beyond crossed only by a distant, quiet road. Handcrafted by a local carpenter, Gosling Lodge is an open space of simple comfort with splashes of blues and green echoing the water outside, where the eponymous birds are often seen in season. Lounging on the veranda or the sofa by the wood-burner, you sink into a dreamlike state of ease. On sunny days, you can splash around in the boat, but even in chillier weather, the covered porch and the cosy cabin itself are lovely spots to curl up and and let the day drift by.
Gosling Lodge has a perfect blend of seclusion and accessibility. Walks across the fields can take you round the corner to meet the inquisitive cows and along a steep track to the local shop at Bradninch, 30 minutes away, or venture further afield to the miles of hillside trails across the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Day trips further out can be historical, with trips to Knight Hayes, Exeter Cathedral and Killerton, or adventurous, with watersports at Exmouth or a long cycle down the Exe Estuary path. While you’re out, stock up on local produce for the BBQ in the shops of Cullompton, or just get some beers for a late afternoon drink before you wander the couple of miles to The Merry Harriers pub for dinner.

I love the boat! A friend of mine is building rental cottages on the side of their pond/loch near New Abbey in Scotland. They don’t have a boat but I’m going to suggest they get one! So fun.

Will you ever consider a trip to America doing the same thing on interesting properties? I'd love to see your take on culturally unique real-estate in America, especially the old colonial homes and the deep south. This home reminds me of Louisiana. Ranch style home in Texas from the 1800s are so fascinating, I've gone on tours before and it's so interesting how advanced they were with so little, like using the design of the home to funnel air using heat differentials to keep a spot of the home 15°f cooler during the sweltering southern heat.
