The beginning and the ending of "Over the Garden Wall" put together, forming the main song of the series - "Into the Unknown"
Lyrics:
Led through the mist
By the milk light of moon
All that was lost is revealed
Our long bygone burdens
Mere echoes of the spring
But where have we come?
And where shall we end?
If dreams can't come true
Than why not pretend?
How the gentle wind
Beckons through the leaves
As autumn colors fall
Dancing in a swirl
Of golden memories

The closest a mini series can get to perfection.
Local closest?
Whaddaya mean, "closest"?
true detective is perfection
Rubie Evergreen and Foreign Wun the show isn’t perfect as said by Patrick McHale (the creator). He added things like the black turtles and calls them “an imperfection in the quilt”. He noticed that in old stories there were always imperfections so that a story felt human, not divine. McHale added imperfections to keep on that tradition.
I wished they made it a whole series
"If dreams can't come true, then why not... pretend?" Love that

The reason Anna, the Woodsman's daughter, shows up in the ending is simple and already stated by the Woodsman: "She was never in the Lantern." Although Anna ended up meeting the Beast after wandering into the woods, she managed to get away safely. Unfortunately, the Woodsman had already gone looking for Anna by the time she got back to the house. When the desperate Woodsman runs into the Beast, it didn't take long before he started believing that the Beast had captured Anna, prompting the Woodsman to steal the Lantern, and thus beginning his long and dark ordeal in the forest.
You do know that the show pretty much certainly plays in some form of purgatory, right? The boys nearly drowned and landed there. Both the huntsman and his daughter are long long (judging by the technology they lived late 19th early 20th century) dead and he finally saw her after accepting the (premature) death of his daughter and after "moving on"
@@MuellerX I never said either of them were dead. And I've seen this series already so I quite know that the Unknown is not exactly a realm for the living.
@@MuellerX i still feel weird
The ending showed that Wirt is waking up instead of finding the wall

Everyone has a right to interpret this show and this scene as they want but damn that's one of the worsts I've seen.
You may be right, Adelaide may have originally wanted her as a child servant too because her sister had a servant girl and sent Beatrice to look for her but ends up bringing Wirt and Greg was even better in Adelaide's favor

Episode 8 makes this a kids show.

I cannot express the level of emotion I feel whenever I watch this beautiful piece of animation. The soundtrack alone is a banger, and worth watching the series for. EK 5991 shhhhhhhhhhhhh
@@kacalllove2914 How come?
@@wernerbeinhart2320 he's got nothing to back that up, he's merely trying to unnecessarily snap some heartstrings. In the comics, it is shown that Anna managed to get away from the Beast, but by the time she got home safely, the Woodsman had already gone looking for her, marking the start of his long ordeal in the woods. That's why here, he's surprised to find her safe. All this time, he thought she was dead, thanks to the Beast and his lies.
@@JackOfSomeTrades29 THANK YOU
this show was so beautiful but in a different way. Like, it's so simple and sad and happy at the same time... the world needs more cartoons like that
What a great and meaningful speech!
In my countrie I'm the only one who likes this. Everybody says "It's too weird"!
exactly
Trash Thanks Garbage! *cough* I meant Trash!
lmao sorry i had too xD
It is definitely a very touching story, even for someone like me. The only problem I had with it is that the tone of the show ping-pongs between silly and dark too abruptly for me, at least in the beginning. That said, it's a fantastic little animation series that's simple yet very mature.
Each line of the song foreshadows a specific episode, in chronological order.
"Led through the mist"
The first episode starts with them lost in the woods, walking through the mist.
"By the milk light of moon"
In the second episode, the light of the moon marks the night, which js the time the skeletons rise from the graves.
"All that is lost is revealed"
In the third episode, the fiancé that was lost is revealed to be inside a costume.
"Our long bygone burdens"
In the fourth episode, the bygone burdens are the people who were lost to the forest and remembered by the people in the tavern.
"Mere echoes of the spring"
In the fifth episode, the echoes are the inhabitants in the giant mansion, both living together but unaware of each other, lost inside their own houses.
"But where have we come?"
In the sixth episode, they finally arrive at Adelaide and discover that they didn't come to the place they were led to believed they would.
"And where shall we end?"
In the seventh episode, they are without a guide and without a plan to get home, and uncertain about their destiny as the beast lurks in the woods.
"If dreams can't come true"
In the eighth episode, Greg decides during his dream to sacrifice himself for Wirt, and his wish does come true.
"Then why not pretend?"
In the nineth episode, we discover that the kids are actually from the present time and got lost after a Halloween night.
"How the gentle wind / Beckons through the leaves / As autumn colors fall
Dancing in a swirl / Of golden memories / The loveliest lies of all"
The last lines are all about the last episode. The "gentle wind" is actually a strong wind that brings Beatrice to Wirt. It is gentle not because it's weak, but because it brings them together. The leaves are Greg's, because he was turned into a tree. The autumn color falling is not just his leaves, but his life leaving him as he becomes pale. The beast offers to keep his soul inside the lantern. The golden memories of Greg's life are contained in the dancing flame. However, Wirt understands that the Beast is lying, and the flame is the Beast's own soul. That's why it's the loveliest lie; because it frees the souls of those who were captured by the Beast.
Of course, the song can also be interpreted with a much more melancholic tone, as the lyrics are both direct references to the plot and elements of a song with its own meaning. Instead of portraying an optimistic end, the song talks about how, faced with the impossibility of accepting death, we maintain the memory of life as a lie.
This is not new, as it is quite straightforward, but the fact nobody talked about it was bugging me so I decided to comment on it, thanks for listening to my TEDTalk.
So cool
I'm going to copy paste this comment before this video's comments turns off.

wanna be friends? i love this show too
@@birdcat7762 hey! Can I be friends with you as well?
can you say what eras are you talking about?
@@different_stuff for example episode 3 is at the type of schoolhouse common in the 1800's, Lorna is based on around 1600's I think, and beatrice around 1700's. The show does a good job showing lots of eras of folklore and fairytale throughout history.
“The loveliest lie of all” was the one the beast sold to the woodsman: that he could keep his daughter alive in the lantern.
Wirt, thankfully, confronted the Unknown with discernment and confidence (that he gained throughout the show as he grew as a person) and defeated the beast’s lie with truth.
That is why most of the people at the end are better off for having encountered Greg and Wirt.
That is also *the spirit of Halloween itself….* in that, as young children, we are terrified by the fictitious “beasts” and monsters around us, but as we grow older learn to appreciate the October season and Halloween as a celebration of pretending; and enjoy the myths of our own creation, now grown up enough to know they’re not really real and just for fun 😊
This is one of those things that sticks with you. No matter how hard you try and forget it. It always ends up coming back to you in some way because it always leaves just enough *just* out of reach to keep you remembering it but it tells you enough so that you at least understand whats going on Perfection
WHEN YOU REALIZE HOW MUCH FORESHADOWING AND EXTRA INFORMATION YOU REALIZE THERE IS IN THE INTRO OF THE SHOW
Interesting how all of it is foreshadowing, except the two boys with the boat.
+JustANinjaOwl Even the two boys with the boat. The boat itself is in Lullaby in Frog Land.
MrChinchill Oh yeah! But the two boys are the only characters in the intro sequence that aren't shown in the actual show, as far as I'm aware at least.
+JustANinjaOwl in the opening it shows everyone from the unknown but the beast.... what if one the two boys that appear there is acctually the beast, but he turned evil because something happened to his friend? .... don't know just a theory
+Julio Tassinari I'm late to the party but, I think, those kids were turned into those trees that The Beast needed for his lamp.

the stories are actually that old. the cartoon is just an animated retelling of these stories. thats what makes it so good. these stories were retold to our generation, just like it was told to people of past generations, before electricity was a thing, and when witches were feared. it was such an amazing show

Unlike Doremi.......UGH
+[4LVAR] Honestly I saw a lot of Scott Pilgrim in this show, the art style, him being called "The Pilgrim" and especially the perfectly wrapped up ending.
+[4LVAR] Yep. It was designed that way. A miniseries with a set beginning and end, that told exactly the story it wanted to in its own way. And in doing so, became one of my favorite series ever.

And where shall we end?
If dreams can't come true
Then why not pretend?
How the gentle wind
Beckons through the leaves
As Autumn colors fall
Dancing in a swirl
Of golden memories
The loveliest lies
Of all

The thing I hate about this video
is that it got overshadowed by Frozen's Into the Unknown
I still remember looking up into the unknown and this coming up
But this will always be better
ikr
Ikr. Now I can’t say “oh yeah I’m listening to Into the Unknown” with out all the ten year olds being like “OMG YOU WATCH FROZEN OMGGGGGG”

This song is so beautiful and that's a rock fact
I first saw this cartoon when I was around 7 on Halloween. I was too young to understand what was happening, but I remembered the calm and eerie ambience coming from the cartoon. It was…comforting in a way. It touched my soul despite I couldn’t understand the story and plot itself. I can’t wait to rewatch this series tomorrow and actually know what this amazing cartoon is about. ❤
"If dreams can't come true ,then why not ... pretend"
Damm that's deep and true at the same time
“Midway upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark,
For the straightforward pathway had been lost.” - Dante Alighieri
Ahi quanto a dir qual era è cosa dura,/esta selva selvaggia e aspra e forte/ che nel pensier rinova la paura
Thank you grug
Uhm, your family is strong
Wise words from Grug
This whole show reminded me of that time or your life, between the ages of 0-5 when you can't really create vivid memories and some stuff you remember as just a blur
I just finished this show. Holy cow. This show really has it all. There needs to be more like this in the world
you should watch an analysis of the plot, it will surprise you
Over the Garden Wall impressed me. It was not at all what I had expected it to be. The greatest part of it is that it is very deep. Everyone expected them to end up finding their way back, but then found out that their bodies had never moved, and hardly any time had gone by. That leaves the audience to decide what happened based upon the episodes and of course, the song lyrics. It's just... awesome.

I'd also like to point out that the title is actually "Into the Unknown". It's an easy mistake to make, though. I had no idea until I looked it up myself.
"The Loveliest Lies of all." How do they find such good lyrics for this?
Demetri Blackheart they lied (ba da bum tiss)
Demetri Blackheart Life.
Over the Garden Wall is a series, not a movie.
This song is familiar but a mystery all at once. Like a lost friend you remember, but you know they forgot you. Sadness and joy all at once. It’s like when you see an object you used to love but lost in another person’s arms.
It's getting time for my yearly rewatch of this show
that show is the only one that made me cry... and that's a rock fact!
How to have an emotional break down: Watch the series again then watch some thai insurance commercial they're old but sad AF bring tissues
Same
And that’s a rock fact:’(
What is this comment? Why did i say "rock fact"? Why is it so popular? I have so many questions for my past self.
Wow, I almost forgot about this series. I really love how it ended on a positive note, it really makes the whole show worth it.
Przysłowiak thank you for my new tradition
This cartoon is so deep and sad l loved it
Rewatched for Halloween all in one night. Been doing this for what feels like half a decade. I don’t remember but it’s nice.
