  • Join me as I go mudlarking on the Thames foreshore and meet up with a number of mudlarking friends who show me some of their fascinating finds and tell me what their dream finds are.
    You do need a permit to mudlark on the River Thames and you can find the details on the website of the Port of London Authority:-

      Ohhhh, I hate you! Just kidding, I am however extremely jealous of all you Europeans,, I hate to say but I think as a severe history buff and metal detector. I'd gladly give up my status as a U.S. citizen to cross the countrysides of your continent!

      A guide in Germany said he'd go every day by a bridge and find Roman coins. Now he can't keep them, thanks to the government!

      I am also "across the pond" and a bit inland in Missouri. I used to live on the west coast and do a lot of "sea glass" collecting.

    • @terryt.1643
      @terryt.1643 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I live on the West Coast, and have only ever found sea glass, pretty rocks, and shells to collect and, of course some modern junk which we removed and recycled or binned. I’ve never beach combed near a big city though, mostly small scenic coastal areas. Only thing I can ever remember like watching mudlarking on the Thames was the disastrous floods of the sixties that washed hundreds of small boats down the Santa Clara river and off to sea and sunk them on the beach. We weren’t allowed out there as children because it was too dangerous. I moved north and never went back as an adult.

    Lovely, and what a generous, interesting bunch of folk these mudlarks are? Must be a fun gathering down the pub! And how amazing that The Thames still keeps giving - and how ancient some of these finds are, especially considering there were so few people back in England before the MIddle Ages, so the chance of finding anything lost, let alone something of value really is incredible - all these hundreds (thousands) of years later - from the muck of a big ole river... Fascinating, thank you...

    Oh, that was just marvelous, meeting all those mudlarks! Such a community you have, all the seekers... I have to admit that one thing that struck me was how each one would smile as you came up, not for the camera just yet but just as they were approached. That was nice. Some truly amazing finds, too; I am a flintknapper, and a dream-find for me would also be a neolithic blade or atlatl point! That beautiful flint blade had me making frankly embarrassing noises (I squeed like a little kid.) If I ever got the chance to mudlark on the Thames, I'd probably get in trouble for carrying away knobs and knobs of raw flint so that I could knap them-- I've seen some real beauties during your videos! LOVED that naughty fishing-weight that you found too, there is *no way* that was strung together like that accidentally! Talk about somebody's "bait and tackle".....

    It's like a mudlarks' convention down there.
    Some great finds. Got to hand it to Steve for wearing just a t-shirt in this weather!

    Thank you Nicola for your video. You do such a good job editing and videoing a pleasure to watch. And if I may say you are so lucky to live in such a old part of the world and finding cool stuff thousands of years old. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Nicola!
    Today is the national day of Romania, of all Romanians and I received a gift from you: this movie. The mudlarkers community is wonderful and your relationships with everyone are something special. I saw some great discoveries of your friends. Thanks for all that!
