How long have you been playing guitar
What would you recommend a new guitar player? Should I learn the theory behind the guitar like the major scale etc. and would you say its better to get lessons or self teach?
Pyroclastic I'm no where near as good as this guy but I've been playing for 2 years and I only started getting better when I played tabs of a songs I enjoy (the first one was rorkes drift by sabaton) And I know barely any music theory or scales. It's good to know that stuff for freestyling but that takes time. Other than that, play guitar if you have a passion for it and good luck. I had lesson but they only really helped me to learn chords early on.
if you like it and if you bother to search tutorials and music theory videos on youtube you'll get it eventually
