- Magnus Carlsen Invented A New Chess Opening - The Plough! Magnus Carlsen repeatedly played pawn to h4, which I'm calling the plough, in Titled Tuesday Chess, 7th November, late tournament on chess.com. Alireza Firouzja was his opponent in this epic game of chess.

I’ve always liked and admired Magnus, but never truly loved his playing style. Until this past year. Now he’s become an otherworldly magician. It’s like his old self has died since abdicating the crown, and he’s been reborn. Magnus the Grey is now Magnus the White. (Gandalf reference.)
As a huge LOTR fan this is the best comment I’ve seen all day I gotta pin this one
Thanks, as if all of us nerds wouldn't get that reference...
that's exactly why he stopped playing classical. there's not as much room for creativity at the top level of chess. granted, there are many super grandmasters with unique playing styles, but none of them are going to be able to reach #1 unless they play extremely solid and precise like magnus in classical games. rapid allows players to make more mistakes, giving us beautiful games like this.
Aha! So you are a White Supremacist! :)
❤ only nerds around here in abundance
After years of analyzation, Ive come to the conclusion that Magnus Carlsen is good at chess.
Hes alright
Nah, he’ll never make it
The word is analysis
He ain’t human.
What if it turns out he was just lucky every single game
Magnus is never late. He arrives precisely when he means to.
haha love it, my all time favourite films!
my goodness that final move was insane, took an undefended pawn, forked the rook and queen AND mated u, bro treated him like he never played a game of chess in his life...
Bro it's not mate - he can go Kg6
the rook at 9:05 is like the protagonist in a kung fu movie swatting away the npcs
😂
moving the king proactively sounds very similar to shogi castling. Very interesting to see tactical convergence in two very similar games!
"Look of this trio of miserable pieces...stuck on the back rank." It's this kind of commentary that shows you're a strong player. Stockfish can't tell you how to say that. Thanks as always for the exciting new games and the excellent commentary. And also..."this one, that one goes," ha ha. I like that touch. Keep up the good work!
Right, stockfish cant. That’s what GPTs do.
Thanks watteau
The fact that a GM did not see a mate in 6 with 8 seconds left on the clock makes me gain some confidence in myself after not seeing mate in 2 in a 15 min game lol
I paused and spent 5 minutes staring at the board and gave up... ... pawn G4. Brilliant.
This Magnus guy inventing new openings is fun. It's always warm to see new players rise. If he reads a bit of opening theory, he will go a long way in chess some day.
I remember trying out the ol' Plow opening on my wedding night.
Lol no comment
Too much information!
We saw this with Bobby Fischer getting bored with studying opening lines and coming up with random chess.
Ironically, I think chess engines right now help Magnus to come up with completely new opening lines and ideas that are either 1) not too bad and/or 2) hard to punish for humans.
As a viewer, it's great that chess is back to being unpredictable. I hate watching 20 moves of opening theory hoping someone makes a tiny mistake somewhere so that the game doesn't result in a draw.
Yeah absolutely history repeating in that sense and yeah I love these games it’s so much more fresh and exciting
If given the chance , people will optimize the fun out of every game. Same goes for chess. I think strategic theory is more important than memorizing openings and creating tactics mid game will always be more fun than following someone else's idea
I think this is why Magnus is a proponent of chess960/freestyle chess? it is so entertaining to not watch opening prep, dead even mid game and eventually a draw
Not going to dispute his place in chess history but I pretty much despise Fischer as a person so refuse to even look at his games.
Truly incredible commentary. I’m new to chess and you make this top-level play extremely digestible and entertaining. And I legitimately laughed out loud at the draw fake out. You earned a sub man, nice job
Thanks a lot appreciate it!
You know you're screwed when Magnus surrounds his king with his pieces and nonchalantly marches everything to your face robbing you of any good legal move.
It is not the invention of Magnus, it was first used regularly by the hungarian chess master Kádas, and the opening holds his name.
yeah only playing, you are right, thanks!
yeah. Magnus fans like to hype him too much
@@aphextemper44 Interesting thought. I assume that all chess fans should consult you on the proper amount of hype? (I would rather die than live in your world)
Gotta like these fresh, if dubious, openings Magnus plays in blitz.
All chess openings already exist. You cannot “invent” them. But you can “discover” them!
Yeah haha, and true just having a bit of fun really!
That "the players agree to a draw" part got me good 😂
Haha
Thanks for clarifying why Firouzja couldn't capture the bishop at 8:29. 👍Unfortunately Levy failed to explain that in his recap. 🙁
No problem thanks for watching!
Lol love the bits of comedy u throw in!
Glad you enjoyed thanks a lot for watching!
9:46😂😂😂 agreed to a draw😂😂😂 u got me anyways good vid man..keep it up
Haha thanks a lot glad you enjoyed
"it's called the plow"
*pushes pawn and then castles*
The mid game was great as expected though it seems the opening greatly benefits from the very passive opening by his opponent.
Man...I wouldn't be surprised if you actually gone viral with your dry humor commentary. Keep it up! Subscribed!
Haha thanks a lot glad you enjoyed!
I thought everyone accepted that the proper reply to 1. h4 was d5
But i guess firouzja still has things to learn
προ is a Greek word & regularly used as a prefix on other words. It could be called a bastardization to mix Greek & Latin elements in one word
Magnus:" I came up with a new move that you won't see coming"
The inner eight year old me: "Do not recite the deep magic to me. Witch. I was there when it was written"
His games are so fun to watch unfold.
I like the corner pawn opening, giving me the opportunity of a corner castle or releasing other pieces if needed. Very versitile.
That opening looks remarkably like we played as rank beginners, but with the difference that we played it wrong immediately upon getting set up.
Yeah haha
Turns out every chess beginner was as good as Magnus.
It’s just unbelievable they think that deep in that short amount of time. Like they see all the moves in light speed
"And here the players agree on a draw" You bastard 😀
Hahaha sorry 😆
Been doin this for years, it’s called the Zerg rush thank you
seems like in blitz playing a provocative move in the opening can throw off your opponent. All they need to do is still to good opening principles but when you have no book to rely on you might feel tempted to respond by trying to punish the weird opening right away just to end up under-developed or over-extended.
Interesting to see how a top player deals with a situation where there is a pawn gridlock in the center of the board and all of your opponent's pieces are protected.
Great commentary 👌🏽
Glad you enjoyed thanks a lot for watching!
My dad would always start a chess game like that when we used to play about 30 years ago
He also invented a new defense. It’s called “if-you-beat-me-I-claim-you-cheated-and-so-I-still-win” defense. It is literally unbeatable and he is a genius.
I'm currently studying this defense. It's simple on one hand but it goes really deep if you wanna truly understand how it works.
These were the types of games my dad and I would play... really mixed up, tight board with multiple hot points of coverage. Reminded me of trench warfare a little. Also he loved opening with rooks, but knights were the ones to watch out for. I have always been a bishop and pawn kinda guy.
3:20 Thanks for the Latin and Greek lesson as well as the chess one!
Kadas Opening, your name is better, seems slightly better than the Bongcloud Attack for white.
As always, brilliant video, perfect length, entertaining and instructive. Thank you.
Haha thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed
Great way to take control of center, one of the first key strategies I was taught in chess. I’ll have to give this a try.
This Opening I saw already in 1989 in many games
This opening is Beaver's claw.
surprising how aggressive he came at mag
Profilaxis is such a nice word to add into my vocabulary
Damn! What a prank at 9:40 hahah
I don't study chess nearly as much as I play it. I never knew I have been using the "plow" opening, and have been using it effectively. Intuitive chess my friends. FUN.
the greatest opening move ever invented 😁😎
Just for info: "Pro" in "Profylaxis" also comes from Greek. Not Latin. It means "before" / "in advance".
Thank you google mislead me!
I can's understand why Firouzja did not seize the center squares in his first move.
yeah I guess also wanted to play off beat!
I’ve been playing this opening for years
He didn't invent this because I have been doing it for a couple of years, and I noticed it being used by my friend while we were playing. And I'm a terrible chess player...
Nothing like a royal fork to end the game.
I invented it before him actually. Years ago.
Reza did not try to control the centre from his second move. This is why he did not get a good position from Magnus poor first move.
Yeah very true!
Magnus didn't invent this. I've been doing this for decades.
11:00 thats mat in 2 with the pown
What a great opening. The plow! With the rook immediately activated!
Rook proceeds to not move at all until castle…😂
We've been lied to...Magnus is the first neuralink patient. It's the only way it makes sense.
I invented this opening and I don’t even play chess.
At 8:32, you can simply win your piece back with Qxd4 (plus get a bonus pawn)
Magnus didn’t invent this, It’s called the Kadas Opening, extremely rare opening
Yeah just having some fun !
I am reminded of the "Buzz Saw"
I know chess is a very special game where every piece on the board matters at any given time.. but at 5:50 when black had 2 Knights on both edges... I mean... any rookie can tell you that this is NOT GOOD.
I wish i could get so good at chess that I would be free to explore and do anything i want just cause it sounds fun and still win.
"Here he got mate in 6 or here in 6 or here in 8 but he dont find them no problem" 8s left ... XD
funny thing is I played this opening as white when I fought my father when I was young and still learned chess.. amazing to see the goat himself play it aswell
Wow this guy is a good chess player. He just join the World Championships, I bet he'd win.
Prophylactic, straight out of the Naroditsky commentary playbook.
He didnt invent it its called the Karas attack i believe and its nothing too crazy doing a move like that essentially just allows black to play like the white pieces and you go from there
Yeah just having some fun, though certainly at the top level he's played it the most I think!
The Plow is Homer Simpson's favourite opening.
😆
Played "the plough" vs. the generic AI at 1000 rating (which is just above my rating, at 942) that was apparently Lv6. IDK why, but that starting position had the AI take a long time doing calculations very early and often.
nice! Yeah I have ben too it is good fun!
I already do this. Though I don't really know what I'm doing really. But I'm trying to learn chess organically on my own. I've played chess and was in chess club as a child, and I've looked at a few lessons here and there, but I've specifically stayed away from ever knowing what a "Spanish open" is. Or any other open. I experiment and try to understand what works and why, and learn fundamentals myself rather than read it in a book.
Funny, because now Magnus has had conversations similar to poker where the "spirit" of the game is lost, and the purity of the game has turned into memorizing moves and "what you should do" that a book tells you. I guess I was ahead of my time.
My guy, don't forget to breathe okay?
προφψλάσσω to protect ahead of time. The "pro" part also comes from Greek.
ah thank you, sorry google mislead me!
Pro is not from Latin. It is from Greek as well. It exists in Latin, but since the word is Greek, the Pro in prophylactic if from a Greek origin.
Oh thank you, google mislead me!
That ending was disgustingly good
Subscribed :) Great breakdown. Kept me interested, was informative, and to the point. No bs. Thank you!!
Thanks very much glad you enjoyed!
Magnus dragging opponents into Tal’s deep, dark forest … on move one! 😂
Yeah haha love it
When I first started playing chess this was my go to opening. I had no idea it was so cleaver 😂 beginners luck, except I still lost a bunch
Tilted* Tuesdays
I tried the Plow.......I got plowed.
The knight wraps it up!
Very anticlimactic that it ended in a draw
It didn’t lol, Carlsen won
What software are you using to do these live reviews
Obs stream labs and then streaming chess.com board
This opening is not new, we use to play since my first game from 97
Draw! You made me laugh!
😆
Finally found the best channel for learning chess...
Thanks a lot! Glad you’re enjoying
@@epicchess2021 kindly make some videos of Tal, Garry Kasparov, Lasker, and Rasheed najmadinov
Rhymes with Cow ...opening. think he wants to court Anna C.
Haha I think that would get me in trouble with my wife 😆
@@epicchess2021 i heard that🤒🤣thanks for writing back, most don't. Great channel!
So after 30 seconds, you admit that the title lies and that it is not a new opening.😮😂
At elite level is tho!
The pawn to h4 is the Despers opening also known as the Kadas opening. Magnus switched to his center pawns for his true opening. "The Plow" opening really?
Haha yeah just having a bit of fun
"His 'horses'..." Call me old fashioned, but when you used that term I decided to leave.
Haha just having a bit of fun. Sorry to hear it was a dealbreaker!
Wow, such a brilliant play by Mr Magnus...
So the plow is the 3-fork?
damn this magnus guy has a great potential to become chess god
Magnus began cheating after this dude got caught cheating. Convince me otherwise
When I played chess for the first time, this was my opening move. You could say I was a chess prodigy
haha if only you'd have carried on!
I've been playing this opening since I was 8, I'm 30 now.
I just said the same comment. My variation involved sacrificing the exchange sometime before sacrficing the game (it is disrespectful to beat your dad-that’s my excuse)! I was three or four!
Playing with my friends around age 8, we often worked on busting the rooks out first
@@pappyfiddlethe difficulty are the squared lines the rooks play way early in an opening. Slices and diagonals cut thru those squared lines at the early game.
I still like the corner-pawn-games however. Look real close and play them close and the knight/Bishop/pawns trio make a fantastic formidable foe.
Yep, love the Corner Pawn Game.
Always have!
"And the players agreed to a draw." I nearly had a heart attack. Well done.
Haha sorry about that one!
@@epicchess2021 Chadnus does not draw.
Literally why I subbed. Brilliant lol
@@epicchess2021 I first thought, "ARGH! These blitz games all end the same way: INCONCLUSIVELY!"
But no. You got me, mate! Good one.
I screamed inside my head the loudest WTF!! I have ever thought of.
...I nearly had a heart attack when you said _they agreed a draw_ 😆
Same here!! I literally felt felt my heart sinking out of my chest area.... 😂😂😂
Same here mate
Me too.
Yeah, that was an epic (!) troll.
😂
