Of course it can be further broken down without a calculator. The same way that 2^x=8 can be solved without a calculator. But the question becomes, "Is that extra work really necessary?" Think about it in this manner, a simple adding machine would NOT be able to solve the original equation, but it most likely would be able to evaluate log(real number)/log(another real number).
