I can't believe you did this case.... I'm 53 years old but went to St. Anne's Belfield from 1st-12th grade and still live in the area. Charlottesville is a very artistic town and unfortunately, has had (including a few months ago at UVA) so much loss. We graduated from STAB (ironically what we call it) with only 60 people, sadly when we walked into our first day of Senior Year, there were 62 of us. You told the story as you always do, so thoughtfully and respectfully.

I heard about the murder of Tessa Majors a day after it happened. And OMG, words cannot describe how sorry I felt for Tess and her family. Matter of fact, my sympathies got the best of me that day. And as a result, I made a spiritual wish from the bottom of my heart. I wished I had been there for Tess. For if I could've somehow been there at Morningside when Tess was attacked, I would've willingly risked my life to save her

I think they need to follow through on the promises to make it safer, but i also want to know why the witnesses did nothing to help tessa. If they saw it you'd think they'd call the police to report it or something. It's just so wrong and another young life was lost for nothing.

I think maybe the witnesses were engaging in shady behavior and that’s why they were at the park. For example maybe the witnesses were buying and/or selling weed or some other drug. They would be afraid to come forward at first bc they would worry about getting arrested. They also may not have realized how bad the attack was, although I feel like it’s hard to miss that

I've said this to you before but I know you get a lot of comments but you really are my favorite True Crime Lady. There is just something about you that I love, the way you break it all down and how much work you put into your research is something I hope you're very proud of because you rock! My heart goes out to Tessa and her family; was listening to it while cleaning and started to choke up a few times and I don't usually do that. Just so senseless. Also! You say keep leaving same request so again...Shanda Sharer! I read the book and surprised no one touches on this one. Her story deserves to be told, as with this one, I left it on another one of yours about kids commuting such heinous crimes. Thank you for all that you do!

This case hit home for me because several of my friends from high school went to Columbia/Barnard so I spent a lot of time in that area of the city during college. I find it surprising though that she didn't know not to go to Morningside Park because it was well-known among everyone I knew never to go there or anywhere near there.

And sorry for my "thoughtless actions"? Thoughtless actions?! You murdered someone that's a little worse than "thoughtless". All these kids need to go away for life - none of them are going to be rehabilitated

This is absolutely insane! I literally have two 14 year old nephews and I just have such a hard time picturing them or any of their friends that I’ve met doing something so Horrendous. One of my nephews lives out of state but the one who lives in my state he mowers neighbors yards and takes back soda cans for the deposit and comes out to my house and helps my husband with our yard in addition to being the main one who takes care of his yard at home too. He is literally so protective of people he loves.

    • @Unbreakable245
      @Unbreakable245 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think these kids were born bad
I just think they became a product of their environment which is extremely unfortunate. Unfortunatly that has been happening a lot here in Sweden too and it is just tragic to see how these kids turn out. I don't think they would've ever been become murderers if their environment was different or if they recieved interventions early. Early interventions are important. When a child is stepping out of line and into path that could potentially lead to criminality, action must be taken. I don't mean sending them to juvie for shoplifting or a schoolyard fight, i actually would like to see the age of criminal responsibility raised in a lot of places. I just mean intervention such as behavioral management programs, more support in school, etc, there are a lot of things you could do, even contacting child protective services. I feel like they should be able to help children get on the right path and social workers should talk to the parents to figure out a plan for the child who is going down the wrong path. However in America, children as young as 7 or 8 and probably even younger have been locked up in juvenile detention centres and have been charged with crimes. I don't agree with that, it will lead to a lot of trauma which can lead to the problem escalating and it is just horrible and it is unfortunatly a practice still used in the US (Especially in Florida) and i think it is time for that to change because it will not lead to anything good. Children growing up in a safer environment has a much higher chance of succeeding than children growing up in these horrible environments and i am so glad that your nephew helps out in both his house and yours.

Hoping you see this before the comments section gets too deep if you haven't already and I promise I won't add it again after this. Case suggestion: Amy Schultz Kell IL. I just wanted to add idk how her dad would feel about case coverage and maybe that's why only 1 person has covered her case but you can reach them by contacting the amy schultz child advocacy center in Mt. Vernon IL. Also, it's such a cliche to say that "we all locked our doors after that" but I had to say it bcs honestly we all did. The population of Salem at the time was only around 6,000 people and kell was even smaller. They found her the next day but her killer wasn't caught right away so there was this very real panic with parents and kids that this monster was literally going to drive up and grab us right off of the street. This case is the reason that I truly fear strangers and it's been with me my entire life!

Please, pleeeeaaaase, PLEASE, no one take this comment the wrong way; But, cases like these (basically, just how sickening society can be so often) is why I'm constantly dressed down && completely covered up in public. I don't think it's right, I don't think I should HAVE to do this in order to feel safer - but, I DO feel safer that way. I wish I could dress like I used to - esp in the summer, when I'm sweating like mad! But, I'm "blessed" (as others call it, I call it more like CURSED lol) with huge boobs. Whether I weight 120 or 155, I have D-DDD cup size. I used to always do my makeup, even if I wasn't going out. Basically, I took some pride in my appearance- once I was finally remotely secure in my own body. However, after being "cat called" almost every time I went out, even a lot when I didn't do my makeup, && the more I read about/watched true crime stories.... the less && less I found myself doing my makeup, wearing shorter shorts (even in 106° with crazy humidity) - hell, wearing shorts at all at some point! Low cut shirts? Nope. Which, for me with huge boobs, that almost even meant swearing off MOST v-necks (which I looove a good v neck)! Halter tops, string tank tops, && especially crop tops? Definitely not. Not as long as I was alone, anyway. Thankfully, I always had male best friends around for the times I was single.... so, that I could feel somewhat safe && comfortable wearing what I wanted to wear && doing my makeup as I wanted to. I have NO idea what Tessa was wearing when she was killed && I am NOT saying that IF she was wearing something slightly revealing, the way she was in some photos, that the fault is hers. I am NOT saying that would mean she was asking for it or would have been safe had she dressed down. I am NOT saying any of this! I just so happened to notice how beautiful she was in face && body - && it does seem like she was comfortable in her own skin (which is SUCH a beautiful, positive thing) && seems as tho she owned that. Seeing those photos just reminded me of how unsafe I feel when dressed anything like that - && I know I am FAR from being alone in that! I want to see a day where a beautiful woman can look nice && wear whatever she wants in public without being harrassed or even killed. I mean, it's men we always worry about - but, this is another case that proves we have to worry about KIDS, as well!
It's just so upsetting. I hope everyone sees the point I'm trying to make - vs jumping to conclusions && jumping all over me. Because, there were also pictures of Tess in layered clothing, completely covered. So.... as I said before, I'm not saying, "Oh. She MUST have been dressed skimpy that night && THAT is why she died." That would be the most ignorant thing - ever. It was simply the fact that she was a gorgeous girl who, in some pictures, was dressed in a way that some would consider revealing. && my belief is she had every single right to dress that way && feel safe. However, it also reminded me of how I personally do NOT feel safe dressed "like that", or even having on a considerable amount of makeup- not if I'm gonna be alone. Instead of getting better, the concept of "she was asking for it" just seems to get worse. [I do acknowledge that her murder didn't even seem to be sexually motivated.... it was simply the fact of how beautiful && confident she was that caused me to be reminded of the point I'm making.]
We, as society, just need to do better.

I have to admit that nothing anymore shocks me but this case shocked me. How horrible that a simple walk in a park turned into such a tragedy. The ages of the perpetrators shocked me but I think what got to me the most was how one of the perpetrators family was hiding his bite wound from everyone so they wouldn't know what he'd done. I don't whether it's your child or not, helping someone try to get away with murder is not helping them and it's certainly not helping society. As for the question of the day, how do we prevent things like this from happening. I'd say stricter punishments for juveniles when they commit serious offenses and for parents to actually be parents and not try to be their children's friends because that doesn't benefit anyone.

I think they should be softer in America at least
Raise the age of criminal responsibility to 15. Children under the age of 15 should still recieve intervention/consequences but definetly not prison sentences. It just needs to be done correctly. The investigation shouldn't stall because the accused is under the age of criminal respinsibility either, they need to investigate what exactly happened so that the child can recieve the intervention and support they need. That is what will actually help, not harsher sentences.

21:30 thats bot true, at all.
The central park 5 WERE present in the park that night, along with 20 others. They were chading, hratong, abd robbing people in the oark that night and wrre arrested for it. Two dozen were brought in for questioning.
Consistently, the 5 were identified by each other and other boys of participating in the gang rape and attempted murder of Tricia Miley.
She was assaulted by multiple attackers, not just one.
They were never found to be not guilty in a court of law. They served thrir entire sentences. Their sentences were vacated when another man came forward and confessed to raping Miley.
That doesn't say anything about the 5, as the cops always knew there were more artackers. Its possible Trisha was attacked by more than a dozen.
The central park 5 were guilty. The patouts were to help Deblasio to garner black votes. Nothing more. Deblasio never cared about the victim.

      Still
      Adult charges?!
      No way
      Infact
The age of criminal responsibility should be raised to 15 years of age
It just needs to be done correctly
There should be intervention and measures for children under the age of 15 accused of a crime but i don't think they should be sent to prison. And the investigation shouldn't stall because the accused perpetrator is under the age of criminal responsibility either, it needs to be investigated to the fullest to find out what happened. In America, children as young as 7-8 years old are being sent to juvenile detention. That is a serious violation of children's rights and that should not happen at all. We need to give these children the support they need, not punishing them. I know they committed murder but they were 13-14 and while there needs to be consequences for their actions, i don't think they should be sent to prison. Maybe they should be in a facilty if they are considered a substantial threat to society but not a prison and not with the purpose of punishing them but for their own sake and society's sake too. And it should be last resort.

In all honesty, I'm confused about Luchiano's conviction. 2nd degree murder for what? I agree that he was involved, but wasn't he just a look-out? Shouldn't that be an accessory to murder maybe even conspiracy? If the little boy is the one who passed the knife to Tessa's killer then he should be the one with the second degree murder charge? Also, why weren't any of the children checked for mental illness, since that is what seems to be the norm with other offenders? But I digress. Tessa didn't deserve to die, so I hope she Rest in Peace.

What could have been done, what needs to be done - everywhere in the world, in my country as well, urgently - is for governments n rulers to invest in n take care of children's lives, welfare n education regardless of their parents or legal guardians social or economical status.
Children who suffer from abuse n/or neglect have lesser opportunities n chances to better their lives n become content n beneficial human beings (even before adulthood).
I can't find the right words for just how criminally our leaders neglect our futures fighting over egoes, borders n religions - investing their efforts in money n status - political n personal... i just can't.
    Such stupid shit.
I m not a naive or optimistic person - at all - i just can't for the life of me - grasp just how it is possible that knowing the things we now know about the human psyche - while i aknowledge the fact that with all our efforts, none of us hold a god-like abillity to fix each n every tortured or unbalanced mind - our leaders don't invest their best efforts in our children (as child-free myself n still aware of just how precious children n lives r) in order to f***ing fix our fearful, hateful, miserable societies!
N i do stand behind every word of mine - ppl fear n hate n torture each other for stupid n petty excuses - colour, religion, disabilities, sexuality, gender - because they r neglected. Because they r raised hateful n fearful.
    I'm sorry, Brittany(?) 💔

Tessa's murder could have been prevented if she would have taken warnings about morningside park more seriously, not underestimated the seriousness of the teens attempting to rob her AND if she handed over the stuff they asked for and ran instead of fighting over a phone. This case is an example of why you should ALWAYS just hand over your stuff if you're being robbed. Though Tessa's "impact statement" was dramatic it ignores the reality that she would probably feel stupid for dying over an iphone - because those songs weren't worth her life and now she'll never record them anyway. Nothing is worth your life never try to fight with armed robbers to save your stuff. Toss it towards them and run.

But not one place in your comment did you place any blame on idk, the actual perpetrators of this crime, and that's shitty. Beaten, robbed , raped, stabbed, thrown down concrete steps. The black students did this to me. All the while laughing and calling me honkey cracker dumbass white boy. You have no idea. The problem with kids and violence today is that kids are given to much freedom and have a sense of entitlement. Stop giving them a slap on the wrist when they commit violent crimes. I think all kids should wear ankle monitors and have curfews like 7pm. There should be police patrolling the streets at all times and cctv on every corner with facial recognition. Might seem harsh but we've tried giving them respect and freedom and made it illegal to hit kids and its backfired spectacularly. Kids have no respect for anyone these days especially elders yet years ago when you were allowed to smack your kids and everyone had the mindset of kids should be seen and not heard kids had respect for there elders especially and there was non of the violence there us today. We've gone too soft on them and it's been thrown back in our faces.
