    Here's a problem you might be interested in: Framework laptop running Fedora 35 has an intermittent HDMI problem. HDMI output is connected to a Denon AVR-X4000 AV Receiver which outputs audio to the speakers, video is output/passed-thru to an HD TV via HDMI. Setting the receiver to NOT pass-thru HDMI in standby mode makes it possible to reset HDMI by "powering off" the receiver.

    I did very much the same as your last one and have been loving it. I put a GTX 1070 in the Core X and got an LG 29 inch 2560x1080 monitor, and a full-motion desk Vesa mount so I can bring it closer to me. The dock I used was a Brydge Stone Pro Thunderbolt 4, and the Laptop is a Samsung Galaxybook Pro 360 13" 16gb RAM, 512gb ssd, and Core i7 11th Gen, but I also upgraded to Windows 11 Pro by buying a product key from g2a for $35 bucks. Also added a WD_Black 2tb D30 NVMe External SSD to contain my steam library so the Laptop SSD can hold the stuff I need for school (Word, documents, essential programs, etc). I can max out Ready or Not completely and get 60-80 fps because the resolution compromise on the monitor made easier by a full motion desk mount for it.

    For the years i've used eGPU's, the biggest thing that I find that affects them the most is Todd Rays, Shadows, and bad driver performance. I've always felt that AMD handles eGPU's better. Secondly, the BL3 bench mark is "odd"... I've been playing BL3 for a long time and on 1080p I can get 120 fps on my eGPU, however when I run the BL3 benchmark I can't seem to break 60fps.

      Can speak to this - I have an xps13 7390 I picked up Q1 2020 - I just took it apart to swap out SSD and the fans were FILLED with dust and unsurprisingly, cat hair. At least the Framework is easy to open and clean tho.

    How much performance loss did you experience with the eGPU vs a native desktop setup, percentage wise? Really tempted to make the jump to a 13th gen/Ryzen Framework 13 later this year, but an eGPU would be a must for me -- thinking something like a 6800 XT and coming from a 1660 Ti MaxQ.

I have connected to mine 3 external Hard drives, the other day my Mac-mini shut down two of the drives for drawing to much power. Could I take the Anker and plug a usb c hub into one of the USB-c ports and get around the power issue?

    In the end you are going to a lot of trouble and not saving very much. For the cost of the thunderbolt docking station you could go ahead and buy a desktop computer, especially if you are going to be paying for a dedicated graphics card anyway. However this is an interesting exercise to see what is possible.
    Regarding processing power of the laptop- look into some of the low end gaming laptops and you'll find that they have increased CPU power as well as internal dedicated graphics, plus they have a better cooling systemn than normal laptops and will allow the CPU and GPU to run at full speed for extended periods. Good gaming laptops can be expensive but there are also good ones available for reasonable prices if you select carefully.
    One advantage of using a docking station is that you only have one computer. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage because you only have one computer to manage and maintain, but the disadvantage is you only have one computer.
    I'm toying with the idea of buying a second laptop instead of building a new desktop. I would want to connect 2 normal 1080 monitors, keyboard and mouse, and external hard drive. I would likely be buying a Ryzen powered laptop so that would restrict me to USB-C docking station. I'll look into your previous review of the USB-C docking station.

  • @AdityaBhargava

    Did you happen to test any moderately-heavy CPU loads with the Framework lid closed? I recall seeing somewhere that keeping the lid closed blocks some of the laptop's exhaust. In my current setup, I have my old XPS 13 lid closed and the laptop held upright in a stand. (With limited desk space, I don't really want the laptop taking up room, and I use an ultrawide monitor so have no real use for the second screen.) My Framework should be replacing the XPS13 soon and I'm hoping I won't have to rethink my setup too much. I guess in the worst case I can try to remember to open the lid up a bit when I need to let something run for a while...

    • @ElevatedSystems
      @ElevatedSystems  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
