Oh, can I ask a question about your notation philosophy? - Observation: You do use dotted quarter notes, but the quarter-note rests are split up into a quarter note and an eighth note. What are your thoughts on this? I'm thinking about these same kinds of rules :)
That's kind of a tough question! I don't really have specific rules, but I am very particular about what looks good to me. Well, I guess one rule is that I will never use a dotted quarter rest unless I'm writing something in 6/8 where the dotted quarter gets the beat. I just really hate how they look for some reason! One thing that's really important to me is to be really clear about where the downbeats are in my notation. Like, in 4/4 I will generally always write things out in such a way that the middle of the bar is very clear (although I would write a quarter note/half note/quarter note rather than 4 quarters with the middle two tied together). I would definitely never put a dotted quarter on beat 2 (in 4/4) because that obscures the middle of the bar. I'm sure a lot of these preferences boil down to how I process rhythms as I'm reading music. And, I'm not sure that I do it any differently than anyone else, nor am I really aware of what I'm doing. Some sort of subconscious quick math I suppose. Since this is piece is in 3 the middle of the bar isn't quite the same thing as a piece in 4. I think I'd be more inclined to use a dotted quarter note at the beginning of the bar, and then possibly an 8th tied to a quarter for the last half. That way, I'm showing beat 3 with that quarter note. I'm sure in some instances (maybe even in this piece) I might use two dotted quarters in a bar, but I think it would depend on what else is going in that bar in the other parts. I guess I like everything to line up vertically. So, for example I wouldn't like to see two dotted quarters in the right hand, and then a half note and a quarter note in the left hand. I would probably split that 2nd dotted quarter up into an 8th tied to a quarter so that the beat 3 in the right hand would line up vertically with beat 3 in the left hand. Anyway, I hope this helps! It's kind of tough to find the right words.
@@michaellucke2654 Thank you! Yeah, I totally agree: It is very hard to find a rule with no exception. I also noticed your use of quarter+half+quarter and started using this myself :D Anyway, interesting to hear your thoughts. Keep up the solid work!
Great job! And what a beautiful piece
