Yes, I've noticed that the Japanese language learning community is extremely gatekeepy and some people get really nasty if you so much as say you have a Japanese friend who helps you. I was verbally attacked just today just for talking about my experiences. The level of negativity took me by surprise because it was really unnecessary. These people are totally bizarre! 🤷

Imma be real despite learning Japanese and progressing at least a little bit it stopped short due to the fact I simply felt embarrassed to know it or even speak it. I don’t exactly know where this stems from but it’s something I’m facing. I’m also learning French too so I’m gonna probably jump straight to this same issue there again.
I haven’t interacted with the jp lang community much cause of that. I saw someone on HelloTalk post about how sad they felt for people learning Japanese because they felt like they were just obsessed in the anime stuff as well. Even if it wasn’t about that, about quote on quote yellow fever. It still came off really offensive.
I hope I can come back to learning with an open mind a bit more.
I agree with a lot of the points in this video.

Thanks so much for this message! I've been feeling down lately about my Japanese because I'm still not able to read a lot of kanji words yet. I have to just keep reminding myself to keep on reading and learning new words and eventually I'll get better and better at remembering how to pronounce them. Another thing I was worried about was having to learn Pitch Accent since it's a prominent topic in the Japanese learning community online but I'm quite a ways from a decent speaking level and I'd rather just focus on learning more words and mimicing pronunciation rather than stressing to get a perfect pitch accent.

I'm glad the video was helpful to you! Every language learner will go through what you're going through but remember it comes in waves. Not every day will feel like defeat so just keep at it! Consistency is the key truly. In terms of pitch accent, yes I often see other youtubers talk about that but imho that kind of thing should be reserved specifically for advanced learners who want to sound as natural as possible. I have never made an effort to study pitch accent and I can converse in Japanese about various topics while being easily understood. It all comes down to what you want. Personally, I prefer breadth over depth if you know what I mean. Anyways, keep up the good work! The only competition is yourself.
