I am convinced that the family of stringed instruments like the violin are the hardest to conquer. But I also think they are the most rewarding in beauty if you can. It is not going to be an easy journey.

What you said is so true about tension and its root causes. When I was a young violin student who had not yet cultivated perfectionistic tendencies, I did not experience tension when playing. Perhaps because I did not care enough at that time about how well I played, which is why I never excelled at violin, but that is another story. At least my body was not in pain when I practiced. Now as I am returning to the violin as a much older adult, I set such high expectations for myself that I am tensed up almost every time I practice. My body gets tired quickly, I experience muscle pain, my bow shakes at times, and my sound quality suffers. I have to actively work at relaxing my body when I practice. It is so much harder to just lighten up and have fun with playing as an adult, compared to when I was young.

Thanks so much for sharing Jane. I agree, playing as an adult is so different than playing as a kid, and our minds can have a powerful affect on us. I’m sure that being as aware as you are will only help you. Letting go of tension is a process, but it is totally doable. Good luck!

I’m picking up the violin again after 14 years. The part on insecurities and being afraid to make bad sounds really resonate with me, especially when I’m playing for my teacher I feel really tense and afraid to play. I also struggle to play on time with the metronome which is so frustrating sometimes.. so thank you for the encouragement and enablement, if that’s a word 😊❤ I love your videos btw!

Love this video. I started learning the violin 20 years ago when I was 10. I only studied it for 4 years and I was doing really well... I could play some really difficult pieces with my teacher and all, but because of life I had to stop, my love for the instrument never left me, though, so this year I started taking classes again and I'm so happy, however it's very difficult to adjust my expectations. I really love the instrument and I hope I can play it well and maybe play in an orchestra soon... But ya know... 20 years have passed so there's a lot of anxiety in here. Loved your channel ... Keep it up ❤

Thank you much for these tips. I resonated a lot with this video and as an adult begginer I feel identified with most of the problems you pointed. On my weekly violin classes I wanted to play so perfectly that I used to get tense, nervous, and anxious, and everything I practiced hard by myself on the week just sounded horrible and tense when I needed to show it to my teacher.
Pushing myself too hard to be better faster just made everything worse.
Once I stopped racing my violin journey and stopped creating lots of expectations that just made me feel insecure, anxious and tense, now I feel a lot more relaxed in my classes and more fluid.
A change of attitude when playing can change so much how our playing can sound. And that's the great thing about most kids learning how to play an instrument, they don't fear, they don't feel embarrased of their sound, they project their sound without any insecurity blocking their music nor any overthinking about what they're doing. That's why I'm currently working towards that mindset.
Being aware and thoughtful when we're practicing has been a great tip too. Sometimes when we make something wrong while playing we automatically try to repeat it multiple times until we get it right without paying attention to the what is actually happening.
Definitely being secure and confident about ourselves and not pushing too hard on our journey makes the difference.
Thank you again Liz for these helpful tips! Greetings from Dominican Republic.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment! I’ve found that mindset truly affects the experience of playing and learning more than anything else. Our minds are so powerful! Good luck to you- it sounds like you’re on a great track!!

Great advice and tips! Your point on mental state and tension is so true. I know adults deal with a lot of tension issue. But I wonder if this is true for all beginners, no matter their age. I have a lot of younger students who play with an unrelenting death grip, but they never complain about left hand tension. Maybe adults realize something is tense and want to fix it, whereas children don't always realize that's not how it has to be!

I feel you. Everything you said is 100 per cent correct. I experience all of them, sometimes at once. It’s fun to get the small improvements.
After six-months I just now feel I’m getting comfortably with my bow-hold. I spent the past three days with a bow in my hand when working from home. Simple things like that have helped.
I just found the practice video! Thank you.

That’s great! Thanks for sharing. I agree- seeing the improvement little by little is really rewarding- I still love that after all this time.

At last someone who understands the insecurities of being an adult violin learner - surprisingly (maybe) it's worse if you've been a music teacher and you have traces of ADHD. Things have to improve immediately! Thanks.

What is the green band under the frog? Does it make it easier to hold the bow?
