Designed by men from the 1930's 40's and then my hero who decided to put a turbo on the original 567 then 645 and then the more refined sounding 710. That sound is the reason I fell in love with trains and EMD. Read about it in Brian Solomon's book EMD Locomotives if you can find it. Also credit to Winton engine company. Thank you gentlemen for those wonderful fossil fuel burning sounds I've heard since about 13 years old now 54. Long live internal combustion engines!!
Lego Train Builder 1999 I had this thing sitting in Homer City, PA a few weeks ago tied down. It ran through its startup sequence right in front of us. Its now PW 4302
Similar to cold-starting a truck diesel engine - after you get some lube through the system at regular idle, you throttle up and set it to hold - it's better for the engine as it warms up. Cold, the thick oil can't splash like it's supposed to when the RPM is too low. Once it warms up, regular idle will splash the oil around sufficiently to lubricate the pistons and cylinder walls and whatever else needs splash lube over direct pressure film.

Union Pacific experimented with turbocharging GP9s in the late 1950s, it was this experimenting that led EMD to introduce turbocharging.
This is the greatest start up sequence currently available.great job.

Friggin awesome
Is there a reason why the FEC blue and yellow scheme looks identical to the Alaska Railroad paint scheme?
The irony is that I was driving FEC 102 in trainz and didn't notice it
710 is unbeatable
Uploaded on my birthday 🍰
Me when I startup in the morning and shutdown at bedtime
Pneumatic starter! Nice. Does anyone know if it uses two like the units with electric starters?
Silly question, but why does the driver throttle up the engine for a while?
To heat the engine up
I think it gets the oil and diesel pumping through the engine, and warms the engine up faster.
He didn't - it's called High Idle and most 710 units will do that on a cold start
