  • To encourage tourism to their city, Chester Illinois embarked on an amazing journey to commemorate the characters of E.C. Segar's Thimble Theater in stone. Nineteen and counting, the statues feature both well known and more obscure favorites. If you find yourself nearby with a few hours to spare, it's worth the time to track down each statue for yourself.

Very neat overview of the entire "Thimble Theater" cast of characters! Most people don't realize that the strip started by focusing on Olive and Harold Hamgravy, and Popeye actually came along later and took over the strip!

I’ve always been interested in how Popeye became the breakout star of Thimble Theater. I guess rough and tumble characters have always had broad appeal!
