  • In this video I am changing the EGR Valve on my 1989 Cadillac Sedan Deville with the 4.5L V8 engine. In addition to the check engine code, I also had a rough idle and reduced gas mileage. I used the AC DELCO part from rockauto.com. The following writeup was immensely useful to the creation of the video:
    cadquest.blogsp...
Additionally, here is the factory service manual diagnostic flowchart for a code E48:
    imgur.com/a/Eb...
This video should apply, fully or partially, to the following cars:
    Cadillac Deville: 1988, 1989, 1990
    Cadillac Seville: 1988, 1989, 1990
    Cadillac Eldorado: 1988, 1989, 1990
    Cadillac Fleetwood: 1988, 1989, 1990
I cannot guarantee that this video will be exactly the same in these vehicles since Cadillac has made changes to this engine throughout the 3 years it was in production. I also don't know if this applies to the 1988-1990 Allante.
I would appreciate any feedback on how to improve my videos for the future. I warn those about to watch that there will be some instances in which I forgot to film a step, where I am blocking the camera, and where my voice is too quiet. I will try to mitigate those errors in future videos. Please feel free to ask any questions if a step was unclear or you would like more explanation.
    Thanks for watching!

I remember owning two of these and i sold them because they both ended up having the same issue i knew nothing about. They drove fine then one day there was a loss of power and it would only about 10 mph. Wish i knew what it was because i knew it was very simple. Just wasnt to knowledgeable about these types of short body Cadillacs

Hi, that can be a number of things. Check your coolant. If there isn't any, you probably have a leak. If it bubbles while the engine is running, you could have a head gasket or intake manifold leak. If there's coolant in the oil or vice versa, same thing. Check to make sure the fans come one while the car reaches operating temperature, it could be your fans are out. If all of that seems normal, you could have a stuck thermostat. You can remove it and test it (a lot of videos out there on how to do that). Check for kinks in coolant lines, etc.

Interesting, mine doesn't have one but they implemented them in 1990 for yours. If you take off your distributor cap it should be under the center plate. There is a 3 prong connector with two star screws on either side.

    Hi, Very useful video.
I'm restoring a 1989 Fleetwood and there's very little info out there, especially outside of the US! (Hello from England btw)
Rockauto have been fantastic for most parts, but trim has been impossible to find - any suggestions?
The Fleetwood is running and driving pretty nice now, but on a long drive i'm getting the "service engine soon" light come on, probably needs a good tune up!

Dave Atherton Hey! Glad my video can help. Do you know what code it’s throwing? There’s some resources online for you to check how to do it and what the codes mean. eBay or cadillacheaven is your best bet if they offer international shipping. I also recommend joining the Cadillac owners forums if you haven’t already. There’s a junkyard near me with several of these models, so if you tell me exactly what you need I can see if I can get them for you the next time I go. We can discuss pricing later. Just send me an email at caramihai.nicholas@gmail.com with everything you need. I can also send over the factory service manual

The little space to get the EGR out is a bitch. I have a 86, 4.1 engine. I got one bolt out more so the right that has a little room to torque it. Now, the left side I'm struggling with. What kind of tool set you have ?! I used a flexible wrench.

I think your best bet would be a crows foot. Also make sure to loosen any vacuum line brackets or electrical brackets that may be in the way
