Crazy that it was this season where Essendon had close games once with Collingwood and twice with Port Adelaide when both of those sides were red hot. Still lost but competitive with the big guns. What on earth has happened to that team in the second half of the season? Huge fall off

@@npd6225 They'll get back up. Sometimes when a new coach adds layers to the system, the team dip hard before they adapt to it. Look how long it took Carlton to finally buy into Voss's style and they looked great for half of the first season as well.
@@blackie75 I take your point but not once has Carlton not a had a crack. They’ve been lost at times with their system but have never not tried. The last 2 weeks they haven’t turned up.
This was a win needed by Collingwood. After the last few wins, this game definitely helped remind anyone why there were top of the ladder for the season

Collingwood didn’t have to put any effort in to win the minor premiership, absolutely poor by Essendon.
I say this as Pies fan... why was this the Friday night game? I don’t think anyone other than us enjoyed watching.
When the last round draw was released this looked a good chance of being a top 2 side vs a team competing for a top 4 spot. Bombers form spiralled awfully the last 8 weeks

I'm a Collingwood supporter too and I didn't even enjoy watching the game. It was enjoyable during the first quarter and then after that it was basically kick-to-kick. We put our cue in the rack after the first quarter (which was understandable but boring to watch).
@@rhysh2639 They let Essendon soak up possession and just watched them kick laterally or backwards like 90% of the time. Every now and then the Pies would run forward, probably out of boredom, to extend the margin. I agree, it was a travesty to witness.

Na they just got an extra training session, the bombers year was made up of on/off performances and was really topped off with 2 unacceptable dackings.

Isn't is strange that Collingwood had 21 scoring shots to Essendon's 16, yet the Magpies smashed the Bombers by 70 points? Contrasting accuracy between the two teams. Essendon ends their season crashing down while Collingwood on top on the scoreboard and the ladder.
How will the Magpies fare in September? They have two home Finals at the Macca, so they're very likely, but not guaranteed, to win both of them, although it may depend on who they face off against in Week One.

Outside the first quarter and half the 2nd quarter they pretty much held their own against the Pies and even started winning more around the contest. A wins a win but come finals you won’t be playing witches hats like Essendon who’ll give you a 50 point lead at half time. Still concerns at Collingwood for mine

so the team that secures the win early doesn’t go all out in the second half in their last H/A game of the season is a concern? Pies have packed up shop at the had when they’ve been dominating the whole season, look at the first carlton game.
Given their defensive woes the last month or so I don’t see how ‘packing up shop’ in the last half of your last game before finals addresses any of those concerns. Still flag favourites but good sides won’t give them such a cushy lead and will beat them if that second half is the effort they’re going to bring.

Surprised they could get 8 minutes of highlights out of this game. If I was an Essendon supporter I would be filthy at the performance my team put up against their rivals, especially after the year that they have had. Earlier in the year Essendon were putting out great footy on the field and actually showing up, putting in effort and having fun with the game but now it looks like no one wanted to run, no one wanted to defend, and people were missing shots for 20 meters out that a U12 player could kick with their eyes closed. If you don't want to put in 100% on game day, dont put on your boots, dont put on your guernsey and dont step out onto the field in front of the fans who are the backbone of your club. If Essendon were playing poorly all year that would be better than them only giving glimpses of what they can actually do. Go hit the preseason hard, no holidays, no drinking and no partying like you have done in previous years. Watch how finals footy is played and what it means for each team and their supporters.

the game is obviously over umpired and the standard of umpiring is atrocious, however 1 of the very few things they have got right is how they have interpreted player's playing for high contact free kicks, particularly Ginnivan, for McRae to carry on like a petulant school boy when Ginnivan got a free kick was pathetic, especially in the context that Collingwood have had the best run with the umpire's of any team...maybe McRae should try coaching that particular player to stop playing for a free kick everytime he's in a contest, instead of carrying on like a twat
