    A "bad night" by a judge can change a fighter's life forever, it's unbearable to see the same judges make several mistakes over the years and keep their jobs.

    • @Khedran
      @Khedran 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      That's just it, "a bad night" insinuates a single mess up, but time and time again the same judges make the same bad calls and are rarely (if ever) held accountable. Adelaide Bird is always my go to, she's clearly got backroom-mobster type connections with the crooked Boxing AND Mma cards she's routinely turned in.

      Honestly I find it hard to agree with that. If Dana saw the fight as you winning there's a good chance you're still getting a good fight after. When refs have a bad night, however...

    I’m a licensed mma judge in the state of Missouri. The judging is as bad as fans yhink on one hand and on the other, it’s not as bad as they think. I’ve met some great judges and I’ve met some judges that literally didn’t know what a triangle choke was. A lot of old boxing judges were thrown into mma judging without knowing anything about grappling.

      @@pcprinciple3774 Problem being the 10 point must system can make that deceptive, especially when it comes to grappling. Based on the way fights are scored currently, a basically even round with a knockdown for fighter A in the last 30 second, probably means a 10-8 for fighter A. But if in round 2, fighter B scores a takedown at the beginning of the round, keeps working and let's say alternates between side control and full mount for the next 4:30 of the round, most judges score that 10-9.

    How statistically significant are controversial/bad decisions? I get that given what's on the line "one is too many", but it would be useful to see if things are getting better or worse over time or if there any particular patterns or trends (be it individual judges, certain commissions...etc). I recently stepped into their shoes and judged my first mma event. It was a card with a couple amateur fights but mostly pro including a former ufc fighter. And it definitely is a lot harder when you sit there cage side. When you watch on tv you see every angle perfectly which you don’t cage side. You can’t see every shot that lands, or every takedown. I even missed a knockdown because it was right in my blind spot. You also don’t see statistics or hear other people’s opinions on the round (for example a commentator)
    Ultimately everything went good, and nobody had a problem with a single scorecard, but it definitely is a whole new experience from just watching on tv

    Sal on Oliveira v Chandler was a perfect example on how the judging system is just too much of a mathematical breakdown to way too many variables. The best way for them to judge would be still giving the winner 10 points, but giving the loser of the round x-9 points based on how they did against the winner, so it becomes more solely judging the loser of the rounds overall performance in those categories. Use the current system just to decide the round winner. I already know it has a possible side-effect of more lopsided scores, it isn't perfect. It is a place to start atleast.

    I might be late to the party but the 10-8 vs chandler vs Oliviera is understandable. The round was even and then at the end Charles got dropped and swarmed. I get that being massive factor. It probably should have been 10-9 but if you thought chandler was winning and then saw that you'd give him a 10-8

They get to sit there ass in a chair and not move, even when they can't see shit. We get the commentary to know whats happening when it's happening and we get there info from the broadcast truck. MMA in general and the UFC in particular have a serious problem with judging. It's partly due to the judges themselves and partly due to the judging criteria/scoring. Something needs to change for the sport to continue to grow. The sport is headed towards decline if the best fighters are losing due to poor decisions, especially since it means losing out on half their pay.

      Ufc has nothing to do with it, in pretty sure the judges are like refs and their employer is the commission. I'm sure they COULD have a say but they don't. Dana even has said after he once removed a judge that he won't mess with the officials again even if he should. Every single event the ufc has in US all of the judges are assigned and hired by the state athletic commission, now in most of the places the ufc goes they have commission. I think to places like brazil they can choose them but not in lot of places.

      @@007oskari As the most influential MMA organisation, the UFC has more opportunity to fix the problems the sport is facing than any other. Other sports leagues set their own rules and hire officials, they don't leave it to the athletic commissions.

      @@byswartz if the ufc even hired the judges it would be seen as fixing fights and who knows what the casinos might do. I get and hear you but it's on the commissions. I don't even think the ufc should have any say in the judges anything other than that they're qualified. I think the ufc could check with a legal team on how hard it would be for them to set some boundaries on the qualification thing, that might fix it if the ufc demands commissions to step it up. I don't know but i don't think ufc directly should appoint them. In any professional combat sports in us i think the commission sets all the officials up. They need to vet out the retard judges and make the pay better for them so in the future it won't attract lazy stupid people etc

    • @007oskari
      @007oskari 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@byswartz in most sports Mostly commissions appoint any officials that can have an effect on the outcome IF there is gambling involved because it's dancing on very thin ice if you run a business that people bet on and the people who run the business decide who referred judges. In europe where I live it's little different but whatever. But i think state commissions should not appoint judges anymore, they should come up with something. But the commissions have their friends/favourites in both judges and refs who they call. But dana has said that there's no problem with refs mostly only with judges

    I hate people saying you have to dominate for a 10-8 because it's one of the problem with mma. A lot of mma scoring issues would be fixed if 10-8 and draws were more lenient. 10-7 should be the score that is given to a dominating fighter and 10-9 to a close winning round.

      @@gnihtemos I think the 2 easiest solutions that wouldn't really change the current system making it easier to implement is opening scoring and give the judges the ability to score rounds 9-9 or 10-10. That would make fighters aware to help them change strategy and letting the refs give a draw on a close round would end a pretty dominate round being equal to a toss up round that could go to either fighter. There's a million other things they could do to fix it, but those are 2 changes I think they could implement tomorrow without much trouble.
