I don't know how you were able to put that bushing plastic washer piece back in while the new switch was on the rod. It's beyond me, I had to put the bushing on first and then twist the new brake switch on to the rod. Either way it worked out perfectly. You saved me a trip to the shop from getting charged who knows how much money for something so simple. I'm still a little mad at you because what you did in two minutes actually took me 45 minutes to do. I suck at working on cars!!! If I can do this, trust me....anyone out there can do the same. Great Video!!👍
Okay just to clarify with that bushing doesn't go on the shaft afterwards. It goes on the shaft before the switch does and goes into the bore of the plunger that goes to the master cylinder. Otherwise you have a couple millimeters of play.
Mine actually stayed on the rod when I pulled the switch off and it was inside the black plastic piece. Not pushed in after the switch was installed. Hope that helps.
2005 Grand Marquis. I had all three brake lights out so I reasoned it was the switch and not a fuse. Watched the Video, read through all the comments, to make sure I knew to expect with the bushing. There was no safety cover in place. The pin was a bit tricky to get back in. The hardest part was trying to maneuver my head and body around to see what I was dealing with. Still, once I had the part, it was 10 minutes tops to switch it out. Thanks.
I was going to comment on that bushing! Anyway, thanks to your advice I was able to jumper the 2 pins and verify that the 3 brake lights did work... so I knew it was the switch. NAPA happened to have the switch for $12 and the actual brake switch swap took 😀less than 5 minutes. Thanks!
I knew I was watching the right video, when you mentioned the 3rd light comes on... but, the main brake lights don't. This will save a lot of time when I only need to check the 15 Amp fuse and the flasher button to troubleshoot the front part of the car during testing.
Thanks for this video too -second one that kinda saved my ass. Works the same for 2002 lincoln continental. Word to everybody reading comments: watch for that bushing and plastic washer like he says in the video, they like to fall out and disappear! They need to go back together the same way -so really observe the assembly before you get it apart. You can usually just put the bushing and washer on first before you slide the brackets to the the switch itself over the whole works -worked fine for me. Once I had it together everything worked good as new!! Thanks again!!
Thank you. I was waiting for the mecanic 4 hours, and he did not show up. We need just to google and watch youtube. I fixed it by my self. Choukran. from a Moroccan 🇲🇦♥️🇺🇸
Thank you so much! The stupid safety cover had me flamboseled. FWIW, The bushing should go on before installing the switch, so it will fit inside the hole of the pushrod. Thank you again!
If not for your video, no way in hell would I've been able to figure out what was wrong as to why I had no brake lights. With your guidance, I was able to solve my issue, however the only thing that was confusing was that little bushing which actually only fit in on the inner right side of the switch, well at least that's how I put it back in.
YES, THIS! I fiddled with the bushing for 30 minutes trying to install it with the collar to the driver side, then the switch popped right in with the bushing collar to the passenger side. This detail was kinda skated over in the video. Maybe it works sometimes with the collar either way but not for me.
Jist picked up a used CVPI from auction. Used your video to troubleshoot the lack of brake lights in the auto parts store lot, got us on the road in 10 minutes
Super awesome video. I didn't have the time to drop my car off to get it done or probably the money they would charged. Easy to follow and it totally worked for me. The bushing was a little tricky. You have to put it on before you attempt to put on the switch. Otherwise spot on.
The best video in brake switch 2006 crown Vic. One mistake is after I take everything off the rod but the black piece on first then slide the booster on the edge then but the brake switch after the black piece then push it all on.
Hey I’m trying to figure out why my tail lights won’t work . The brake lights are fine and work but my running tail lights don’t. Are they the same fuses you showed in this video?
Whenever i turn on my 99 Crown Vic. It won’t let me shift. It just happened yesterday, i have to do the Brake-Shift override when the car is in accessory mode to shift into Neutral and then turn the car on and shift into Drive. Could this be the fuse or switch? Every light works and obviously the brakes work as i drive. It’s just not letting me shift and my brake lights are out.
I think I might need a new brake switch in my grand marquis. it works but now that its cold and frosty I can see it only coming on when I push it down far.
I just watched this vid for reminders but i had to put the bushing on first . It wouldn't go past the plastic diameter of the switch,. Once i did that it worked like a charm
Thank you! How do I make a 2001 tail light work on my 2011 vic? The 2001 tail light has 4 bulbs and the amber strip on the outside bottom (I think for turn signaling) and has a different harness connector than my vic takes. Is there a connector that converts the 2 plugs together? Or do I have to do manual rewiring, or something else?
This video worked for my 2009 grand marquis. I swapped out both the red fuse in the dash and the yellow fuse in the engine area. The yellow fuse is what fixed it I think.
I’m desperate need of help…i my brake lights are stuck on with the lights on. When I turn off the light the brake lights work properly..I changed the brake switch . Not sure of its defective
@camman684 all my brake lights out. tested 3rd brake light by itself and it lights up when plugged into a 12v power source. checked all fuses and they are good. just replaced this brake switch. all brake lights still out. Any luck for you yet? I got a 2006
I have a 04 grand marquis the shift is stuck and brake light problem i changed the brake light switch and shift lock solenoid what else could be wrong?
I have a 2005 crown vic an my third brake lights bolts were burnt I replaced them lights still don't come on the two fuses in the bottom don't come on when I'm testing the testing for power what is the problem here
my brake switch was replaced but my victoria is giving me the wrench light for brake correlation, it’s acting like i’m always “on the brake” so don’t know how to fix
Mine actually swivels a little bit. Like it rotates up and down some after installation. Is there some cause to that? I'm assuming it's not supposed to move
I’m having sorta the same issue here. Brake lights went out all together but running lights were good. I was sorta confused that all my fuses checked out fine. Wiggled the wires to the connection harness of the switch and saw my that my two bottom brake lights work. Hoping it’s the little harness because the two red wires aren’t reading any charge. That could just be a problem with the harness im dealing with?
I have a question in my 2005 Lincoln town car the switch on the pedal some one bypass it and pulled a straight wire to the battery instead of wiring it to the harness cables why.
Thanks for posting this video, very helpful. I just bought a 2003 and a 2011 CV. Both jave no brake lights, but all of the other lights work. Do you have any ideas of what might have been cut when they retired these units?
This saved me thousands of bucks in potential diagnostics and possible tickets - thanks a bunch!

Yo your comment saved a lot of frustration the way he put it in didn’t click with me thanks so much !!!!!
This is true. The black bushing does not fit in the hole. It stays on the inside of the new switch.

Preciate the video this was exactly what needed to change plus the connector and the fuse under the hood. I didn't even know it was thete.
Thanks! because of your video, I was able to replace this on our 2006 Grand Marquis in less than 15 minutes!
this guy explained it so perfectly that it was as if I'd done a thousand ....so simple ...thank u buddy
Thanks for this video. I was about to take my car to the shop to get this done. I'm glad I watched this first.

Thanks for the high quality, straightforward video.
Thank you for the video. Just changed the brake light switch on my gorgeous 2006 Lincoln Town Car. Followed the steps and lights working again.
This video saved my life and my pockets!!!! I didn’t check the fuse under the hood!! Thanks
Thanks for showing us how to replace the brake switch on such an old vehicle. Really appreciate it.
Bushing goes on BEFORE switch, other than that great video
This. Took a minute to figure it out
What does that mean? How lol

My 08 police interceptor doesn’t even have that 15 amp fuse. However the 20 amp fuse under the hood is blown so I think I found my problem
What's the cause of a turn signal blinking twice as fast as it should, in example the right turn signal blinks twice as fast as the left turn signal?
great video very helpful
Just replaced mine. Still not working and fuses look fine. Anything to look for
@camman684 all my brake lights out. tested 3rd brake light by itself and it lights up when plugged into a 12v power source. checked all fuses and they are good. just replaced this brake switch. all brake lights still out. Any luck for you yet? I got a 2006

Took me awhile to figure out the bushing is not slipped in like the Tech shows but is placed in the ID of the rod coming through the firewall.
Thank you for the help!
I have an issue with tail light fuse popping when brakes are applied. Know anything about that, that may help me??

Thank you so much for this video

So mines didnt have a bushing what does that mean? Is that bad not to have one?
Hey. I've tried everything. And my brake light still won't work. Changed bulbs...but still won't work. I'm lost.
