Beautiful looking vase Carl! I love your lathe! Thanks for mentioning me :) Mineral oil does help so the wood does not dry nor get humidified too fast, thus preventing cracks. That said if the crack wants to appear nothing can stop it. The great thing about mineral oil is that you can later apply any finish containing solvents to your project. Take care and thanks for another great video!!!
Man can't wait to see it finished, the grain and color are going blow your mind. Glad you didn't edit out your little mistake, makes us mere mortals feel like we have a chance. Lol Thanks for sharing your videos. Take care, David
Just getting into turning on a mini lathe, but I've learned so much watching these vids. Makes me wanna start saving for a bigger lathe so I can get into some big projects. Getting fairly good at rings, tops, small boxes, etc., but can't wait to try some bowls and such. Thanks, Carl, for the great work and tons of info for us new turners!
Robbiethewoodturner Thank you Robbie, I just packed it full of shavings for a few days. I just saw your video with Brendan, that's so great you guys got together for a visit. Take care, Carl
Just catching up on some missed videos... Love the vase... And that hollower is slick. Now I need to grab one of my Pecan logs and see if I can do one this weekend. Thanks Carl
Beautiful vase Carl, lovely shape, and some great figure in there, which will "pop" when it's finished. Looks like the skies the limit now my friend :). Take care Mike
Very nice; about twice the size of anything I could do on my machine. Good thing I'm into "small" %^) And thank you so much for the shout out for my shaker table. I really love it, and I think I'm going to make another one for my daughter.
Glad to see you and the super lathe are getting on well Carl, great video and a great looking vase. Looking forward to seeing the finish on it. All the best Tony
I HATE your fancy new lathe and all you fancy new tools !!!! I'm glad that I have only got a basic lathe with six chisels, SO THERE !! Seriously though, great vid again and its nice to see that not everything always goes smoothly. Cheers Carl
Carl, nice vase that highlights the amazing fiddleback on that maple. Just felled a tree in my backyard. Will have to try the water barrel and detergent method. Thanks for another great video.
nice project carl. can I see a close up of the support , its a fair size ,how do the wheels lock for different sizes, and the timber in a tube of water , a lot of good points there carl thank you
Carl, great job on the vase!!! Was your new lathe powerful enough to easily handle it? Ha I already see a big difference in what you turn. Great job. Paul
Hello Carl, Great turning. The part finished item reminds of something straight out of an ancient Egyptian tomb. Your Carter & Son turning tools are starting to appear here in the UK but unfortunately with a warning that import duty will have to be paid. I think Paul Crabtree's hollowing tool is great and the little spring is a stroke of genius. Best wishes, Alan
Is that a feeler spring set to the desire thickness of the hollow? That's a great old-timer idea! So the feeler spring tell you when to stop on a section so you don't cut in too much and compromise the integrity of the vase?
Not being a turner I think I understand turning a wet piece is easier BUT doesn't the piece have as much if not a better chance of cracking/checking when it dries? Thanks for sharing.
Tks for the information about managing the material, the more I learn, the less I know..... Will get my 12x8 (or 8x12?) monster lathe working again - kids and I enjoy your vids!
Was Going to try this, but haven't a steady rest nor a hollowing rig. Any ideas how to make them from stuff found around the home? Not making an urn for Maverick after all. Hello to Robin, too!
@@CarlJacobson Thanks Carl. I've a couple ideas rattling around in my head. One goal is to maximize the diameter the steady rest can handle. There's no reason the frame couldn't be square I figure, & mounting it to the sides of the lathe bed and the bench will let me place the two bottom wheeles just barely above the bed. Comet IIs spindle is only 6" above the bed, want to keep as much of that as possible. The other is to make the hollowing rig from Baltic birch plywood. A rectangle cut out of a glued up 1.5" thick piece ought to be strong enough. Will let you see what happens!
Great project once more Carl. A fantastic piece of maple. One problem that I have here in the uk is getting pieces of wood like that. I was just wondering where you get your wood from so I can see if it would be possible for me to get wood the same way. Thanks, keep up the turning, Tim
MrMastermind14001 Thank you, Matt has a lot of great suggestions, sounds like for your area. It's the same here in the US, tree trimmers are a great source of free wood.
Really nice piece. Man I really like the tools that Paul makes. I need to invest in a chuck, and I am looking at a set from PSI CSC2000C Barracuda Wood Lathe Chuck System (139.95) VS the Nova set (about 230 for same amount of pieces). Can you recommend one over the other? The PSI set is cheaper, but it has good reviews and for where I am at with turning, I thought it should work good for me. Thanks Sam
Sam Slechta Thank you Sam, I've only used Nova chucks, and never had a problem. If the PSI is getting good reviews, that might be the way to go. Take care, Carl
Hi Carl. Beautiful as usual. I don't have variable speed on my mini lathe and was starting to think about upgrading to one that does. Is there anything I should look out for regarding variable speed when considering a new lathe? Any advice greatly appreciated. And I noticed in this video you mentioned sanding in reverse. What are the advantages in doing that? What other advantages are there to having a lathe that reverses? ie should I consider buying a lathe with variable speed and reverse? Thanks in advance for any advise and keep up with your wonderful videos because I learn something every time I see one. Cheers/George.
George Whitfield I think the variable speed on most lathes is the same. Sanding in both directions stands the grain back up so it's not laying flat all one way.
Hi Carl, Which kind of drill bit is best for end grain on the lathe? I use a forstner bit, but it seems to bog down a lot, especially in green wood. Would some sort of auger be better? Thanks, Sam
carl im trying to hollow out my first vase,,the piece is about 8 inches long,,i drill the center hole,,,but for the life of me I cant get the wobble to stop on the end when I remove the tail stock,,its hard rock maple and I cant seem to make a dent in it,,help,,,,,lol
Love that piece Carl. I've not been turning for long prob 6 months. I got a nice piece of Black Cherry 10 inches long n 8 inches dia bark on. Is there much I need to be aware of to make what you made. Apart from pre boring. Thanks for your advise in advance.
Could you write the name of the hollowing tool you are using. I am having a lot of trouble hollowing any depth and would like to review the tool. Thank you.
Ya know you can always take a long auger bit and put a handle on it, for the most part it keeps itself straight when using it. Then you can pre drill, post drill, drill your pants off, dont really even need a tool rest

a lot of good points there carl thank you
sonny0754 Hey Sonny, I'll show the steady rest in Mondays video.
Hi Carl,
nice video.
the maple wood has a beautiful grain texture.
At 15 "length one already needs the right tool:-)
Günter Schöne Thank you
Great looking vase Carl. Thanks for sharing.
Ernie
Ernie Ballard Thank you Ernie
Looks like an ancient Middle East piece. Regardless the grain is awesome and most often simple is way better than complex.
bluemtnsman Thank you
Carl, great job on the vase!!! Was your new lathe powerful enough to easily handle it? Ha I already see a big difference in what you turn. Great job. Paul
Paul Crabtree Thank you Paul, I'm looking forward to our visit.
Do you have a link for the hollowing tool?
Hello Carl,
Great turning.
Best wishes,
Alan
Alan Simpson Thank you very much Alan,
I'm with you, the spring is a stroke of genius! It's so easy to use.
Take care,
Carl
beautiful vase carl :) Also, when soaking wood inside soap water or anything like that, does the wood absorb the water or does it somehow dry out?
Peter Matthew Thank you Peter,
The wood absorbs the water, this will not dry it. It dose keep it from cracking untell your ready to turn it though.
How do you prevent the wood from warping if you turn it when it's wet?
I'd like to see you make some fancy segmented vases.
Sean Brown I'm going to work on segmenting over the next few months.
Is that a feeler spring set to the desire thickness of the hollow? That's a great old-timer idea!
So the feeler spring tell you when to stop on a section so you don't cut in too much and compromise the integrity of the vase?
Jerry Giesler Yes the spring is for the wall thickness, it works great.
amazing!! we turn olive wood .hopefully soon we try if we can make big vase
+sof jsk Thank you!
Nice job Carl
Everette Burk Thank you Everette
great vase. Thanks for sharing
icespeckledhens Thank you
Not being a turner I think I understand turning a wet piece is easier BUT doesn't the piece have as much if not a better chance of cracking/checking when it dries? Thanks for sharing.
MRrwmac It could crack ether way, but you have a better chance if you rough turn it and then pack it in shavings.
Well I guess having that air right at your lathe is handy. Does this mean the little 3" apple wood box days are gone?
Ted Alexander I'll never get away from boxes, I enjoy making them to much :)
Really beautiful and interesting grain. How are you going to finish the inside?
mieguistumas Thank you, I'm not going to sand the inside of this one.
Tks for the information about managing the material, the more I learn, the less I know..... Will get my 12x8 (or 8x12?) monster lathe working again - kids and I enjoy your vids!
Thank you John
Was Going to try this, but haven't a steady rest nor a hollowing rig. Any ideas how to make them from stuff found around the home? Not making an urn for Maverick after all. Hello to Robin, too!
Hey Bob, you can make a steady rest pretty cheap. Roller blade wheels and a wooden frame. I'm not sure about making a hollowing tool.
Nice video really enjoyed it.
Thank you Kevin!
Beautifully done, Carl. How long after taking the blank out of it's 'bath' did you turn it? Thanks for sharing!
fryefoto Thank you, I let it sit for a couple hours.
Its a beautiful vase and it will be nice to see it finished.
Do you get catches when you hollow out?
thanks

Thank you James! This tool works very well, not many catches at all.

Do you have one of those plastic washer between your chuck and spinal?
Loved this video! Can you link the tool you used to hollow the vase? Also, what’s the red tool with the wheels? Thanks!
Both of the tools are from toolsbycrabtree.com/
Carl Jacobson Thank you, sir!
Question .have you ever turned a magnolia tree peice and is it a good wood to turn
Kirk Mowery That's one Iv'e haven't tried.
Ive turned a small snowman out of it and its some beautiful wood
Love that piece Carl. I've not been turning for long prob 6 months. I got a nice piece of Black Cherry 10 inches long n 8 inches dia bark on. Is there much I need to be aware of to make what you made.
Apart from pre boring.
Thanks for your advise in advance.
Thank you David! I would take the bark off, but other than that I don't think you'll have any problems turning it.
What was the first lathe you started with? Way to work your way up!!!
Casey Jones I started with a old Craftsman lathe
I have watched you for so long, and always enjoy each new project. I started with a Delta 1440 and now have Powermatic 3520. Keep the projects coming.
Could you write the name of the hollowing tool you are using. I am having a lot of trouble hollowing any depth and would like to review the tool. Thank you.
Here's his YT channel but I haven't heard from him a few years. th-cam.com/channels/kGaX1GyGfMWYveojZq07_Q.html
where did you get that cool wall thickness hollower at?
This one is by Paul Crabtree at toolsbycrabtree.com
very nice ! like always lol
Flash light to see what you're doing...inspired ;-)
What kind of wood did you use for the vase?
Jerry Giesler It's Maple
vert nice
Thank you!
I Like
Thanks!
What would this sell for?
I sold this one for $200
There's nothing that shoots a stream of chips at you like a lathe. :)
Right?
How could I get a tool like that?
I don't think he's selling them anymore.
Could you check and see?
Ya know you can always take a long auger bit and put a handle on it, for the most part it keeps itself straight when using it. Then you can pre drill, post drill, drill your pants off, dont really even need a tool rest
