Best you can get with class 1 is 4on4off home every night Thats what I do in class 1 double deckers for home bargains, 4 days you concentrate on work 4 days its all about family and having some me time.
I no it's a bit of a personal question but what's the pay like on your 4on4off shift pattern.
I believe they pay around 37k in the North west

Your off time falls on Monday to Thursday your off while ya family work that 4/4 is a nightmare !!
I was working 12-14 hour nights class 1 salaried, sometimes almost worked out less than minimum wage per hour! So much more hassle as well. Motorway closures most nights, diversions off diversions to avoid low bridges and weight restrictions.
I drive a little 12 tonner class 2 now Monday to Friday, finished at 5 every afternoon, and a very significant increase in hourly rate!
I can't see I'll ever bother driving an artic for work ever again.
The words you spoke are absolutely true. I've been a driver for over 20-years and 14 of them where in a class 1. I have chose to go back to class 2 work on the hiabs where I started my driving career over 20-years a go and I have to say it is the best thing I have ever done. if anybody reads this don't fall for the lies that there is a shortage of class 1 drivers it's just that all the class 1 drivers don't want to do it because they're sick of being treated like mugs and they have realised you cannot buy time or memories back. Glad I saw this ATM I,m trying to decide to go to car to class 1 like people are saying too or start with class 2 and the more i do research I find more people like to stick with class 2 more. The only thing I keep thinking is the pay that different or can you still earn a lot of money just on class 2.
my father was a class 1 tanker driver long distance his only regret was not seeing us grow up
I think the wages may be the problem. There has been no significant wage increases over the years. One job 40 years ago would keep a family well, but now 2 parents working full time isn't even enough these days.
As you said time is precious.
Many households could afford to live on one wage but it’s just that families live such expensive lifestyles today. Eating out, going out every weekend, big expensive holidays plus two new top of the range cars on the drive. If people went with less and comprised their material objects they could probably afford to live on a single wage, but most won’t compromise because their new car, I phones, Sky Subscription and big fancy holidays are too important.

@@matty6848 We survive on one wage we have 2 kids cant remember the last time we went out for a drink or a meal we have one car which is needed for work we barely manage but we do survive just but its no fun we will both have to work as soon as the kids are older
This has made me feel a lot better about my job. Currently doing Class 1 Day work in the construction industry and getting a damn good wage for it by all accounts. Home every night with the family, Max 11/12 hr days, no night out, very early starts. Thanks for putting things into perspective for me 👍
I’m glad I do days with class 2 (12 Tonner ), multi drop plumbing supplies I couldn’t do with hassle of not knowing whether you’d be sleeping out or not and not having a life. Love your honest vids, especially when you’re around West Dorset.
Great to hear an honest opinion on the industry. I've been doing multi drop work for 30yrs around 40 to 60 drops per day. Just over a year ago moved to class 2 and now on tippers and cement trucks and to be honest I love it but at 48yrs old I've decided to sit my class 1 with a view to get out tramping for one reason only. My kids are all grown up and away from home so now have the freedom to try the things family life would never allow. Hopefully not to old to learn new tricks lol.

Thanks mate, its definitely not a family friendly career, it's finished many a relationship but also many family's get along with it just fine, it's all down to the individual.
I'm doing my class 2 now and my son has his class 1. He does tramping and you described his life in a nut shell. Trying to work every hour good sends to take home that magical high wage a week. Hes the only earner in his family but he misses so much and come the weekend hes buggered up. This is the reason I'll stay class 2 and hopefully days to. Great insight ta.
I started doing foreign work about 2 years ago my kids were older and it's brilliant for seeing something different and money ok and good trucks to drive.not everyone cup of tea but try it.take care
Hi Kev Tee, good to see your vids and agree with your thoughts from my observations. I worked as a motor mechanic mostly on Mack Trucks and a bit on Volvos in Brisbane, Australia and you see a lot of marriage breakdows in the heavy trucking industry. I enjoy seeing the scenery in UK and remember the drone flights in Scotland. Cheers to you and other vloggers.

I used to tramp got furloughed and realised wot I was missing now in day work getting decent money and home by 3 most days
I work in recovery and I always drive class one I absolutely love it and luckily I don’t get night out due to how far I live away from work because for me to get to work takes me at least two hour drive but I really love my job and I wouldn’t change it I love having new challenges and I love going to see different types of tracks and how the drivers are doing and how they get into trouble keep up the good work truckers. Well said Kev, exactly the way I saw it, life is too short to work all the time. Glad I,m retired now, got quite a few tee shirts over the years and enjoyed some of it, but not all. Driving heavies is for young free and single only. Personally I enjoyed my time on recovery the most, if I had my time again I would do Heavy recovery. Keep up the good work.
That Vauxhall Astra looked so clean and based on the way it idled which was quiet for a diesel plus it wasn't smoking which is rare that would make an awesome car for someone
Regarding the class 1 work from watching your vids and other channels like yours the biggest waste of time is the loading and unloading process business's need to be held accountable when staff take too long for loading or unloading as it just wastes the drivers time how can someone sit and wait 1or2 hours before they start getting unloaded/loaded there should be strict time keeping measures implemented "appointments" made so drivers get in and out quickly and should the process take more than say an hour a penalty fee for every half an hour longer should be paid directly to the driver
That scene at 5:17 brought back some memories. Did a drop on a narrow road with a DAF automatic. Went forward thinking there was space to turn around, but no it was a dead end. Had to reverse all the way back down from side road onto the main road.
Good, honest testimony. Fair enough! I understand it is not the same experience for everyone. Best thing is, you did it to realise your personal preference and didn't take someone else's word for it from the outset. It is experience talking, but your personal experience based on your circumstances and requirements.
I’m not in the trucking industry, let alone have a job (currently in a college), but i guess you’re right, time is the most expensive asset we have and we don’t even have a clue when are we going to run out of it, so it’s important to always have some amount of time of our live dedicated for the family. I used to live in Crewkerne and totally agree with not great in class Class one! Especially where you had to pick that last one up from! Tight in an Iveco daily down through there! I know that road through South Perrott and up over Winyards gap and Toller down towards Dorchester too! Lovely views up over there, stay safe and see you on the next one😊

Love the outakes Kev! As someone who has just passed my C licence (will be doing C+E) I completely agree with you. I am looking at doing skip work, hook loader work or builders merchant work as its usually the same hours as yourself and so on! (Home every night!) maybe in the future I will move on to C+E! The rate of pay is the exact same for me as a fully qualified truck mechanic. so was an easy option for me to drive them instead of being stressed out and fixing them etc! Kev you took a lot of sense obviously being a class 1 driver you know what you are on about just the same as me I have been there class 1 and I'm now driving Class 2 6 Wheeler would not want it any work other way especially this day and age lovely video mate thank you youlovely to watch you credit too love to your family
Hi Kev , glad your doing well, liked your chat about the Class 1 or Class 2 work. I drove from 1980 --until 2018 i did day work ,night work doing food delivery's . Just the same as when you worked for the Watercress come in at 9am load not ready until 1200 and you are still expected to get the delivery's done. I have also done tramping Sunday to Thurs but you allway's ended up home Friday morning. I also worked from Oldcastle in Ireland delivering Furniture to the UK Better hour's as you started a round 0630 and the shop's are closed by 1730 The early start's were catching the ferry from Dublin or Hoylhead for the return . I also spent 8 year;s working for 3 firm's doing traffic in the office doing the back load's etc it's not allway's easy to please every driver.When you look back over the year's at the time you missed life with your family just to pay a mortgage and the bill's like you said 20-to 30 hour's a week more than a normal job, to earn a living wage. Then you get the i will only drive a Scania or i wont get out of bed for lees than £14 an hour driver's end of the day you drive anything your given , i would like to see these driver's in an ERF with a twin splitter gear box even get it out the yard and onto the road. His company will do one of two things
1. Sell the car on there auction site
2. Sell the parts from the cars that are not fit for the road
So basically use all salvageable parts to sell to people like ourselves to fix our cars if you like

Grew up with lorries, now in my late 60s, always had a lorry ( 7.5 ton) for the farm, but when the CPC stuff came in it was untenable, so now use a Land Rover and trailers. On another point I am surprised at the amount of time drivers waste at ADCs, that needs a shake up methinks. Interesting Vlog, thanks Kev.

Great vlog kevtee I worked in a garage for 15 years I was glad too get out of it always wanted too be a driver got a job driving a long wheel base vw crafter for a upholstery firm good hourly rate for a van driver I thought driving longish distance would be for me but it wasn't plus I didn't like the gaffer so I left and driving for a motor factors and I love it

Great video mate. I’ve been living in Sydney this past 7 years, I plan to return to the Uk in 2 years time. Keen to get my trucking licence. Seems like class 2 licence is the best option if you have a young family!

I lost my class 1 licence due to me returning to the Uk in 1999, having been a trucker in south Africa for 13 years I would spend a month or 2 on the road, having said that the weather was mainly good and no tacho laws to restrict you but the family hardly saw me, a weekend end here and there and off on the road again. I had the opportunity to take my wife and then young daughter on some far out trips such as driving through the Karoo and the Garden route pulling 2 trailers. UK ,trucking was not to say the least very boring and restricting but at least you dont get hi jacked like i had experienced in the past, I`m now a class 2 driver and never desired to go back on the big rigs. Ive been over to the continent 14 times which was a blast but the job ended due to loss of contracts.

Hearing you say "dropping down " to class 2 irks me. I've a class 1 licence but chose to do class 2 for the balance of enjoying both the job and time at home and the money ain't much different. Some of the places we have to put a rigid as you know are tricky as they don't bend ( or not intentionally LOL ) . It's just different not dropping down

Nice chat comparing class 1 and 2, am currently driving coaches but Covid is killing the industry at the moment so been thinking about doing my class 2 in the new year

I completely agree with you. I took a slightly different path and started shunting. I do 12 hours a day 4 days a week with overtime if I want it. The beauty of it is I know what time I'm going home every night. The only downside is it can be boring and repetitive. It's also quite hard on your knees but I get a little exercise.
When I retired I worked on agency work driving class one then one day they asked if I would do a skip job the following day I grudgingly said yes Loved it Different job each load met new people every day

I sat my PSV test on the 6th July 1993 but if I had taken it on the 30th June, I’d have gotten my Class 2 licence automatically through Grandfather Rights. The law changed on the 1st July ‘93 meaning that I would have to sit a separate test for the Class 2. I still want to go for my Class 2 but it’s expense and time that I’m struggling with. My friend has a business that has tipper trucks and I’d love to work on those as it’s constant day shift Monday to Friday. Another entertaining video from your good self. That's a Mint vlog Kev I have considered taking my class 1 a few times but always landed a class 2 job that suited me, driving milk tankers on farm collection, class 2 curtainsider work and now on a concrete mixer, did some distance work on one job driving a class 2 curtainsider with nights out and to be honest for the money difference and getting messed about all the time, i would prefer local class 2 work, I get comments like you only drive a puddle jumper so my reply now is going to be "yes but I have plenty of time to puddle jump driving my class 2" 🤣 🤣 🚛 👍

Great explanation of the pro's and con's of Class 1 over Class 2, I think you might have put a lot of Drivers off going for their Class 1 Licence, as you say the wages aren't that great for all the hours. As you said you got into many scrapes driving the Class 1 all over the country, London was always great, keep up the good work, and leave them little Country Roads alone, as always Kev, Drive Safe, Stay Safe.
Class 1 where I am right now all night long. 4 nights on 3 nights off Fri-Mon with Sat and Sun at a higher rate, and go home to sleep. I couldn't do tramping so all my hats come off to those who do it. I did pallet work on class 2 and can't stand it, i delivered plumbing materials to building sites around Greater London and Central London which was a lot of POAing around but I enjoyed, the money wasn't great and had to travel 20 miles to work. Now I travel 2 miles. It all depends who you work for and what kind of work you're doing.
I drove a class 1 since 1991 mainly around London on walking floors and ejector trailers, Nights out, 65-70 hours a week, always treated like shit, poor hourly rate, so much hassle day to day, never at home, never saw my children grow up, Now i drive a class 2 8 wheeler for a waste management firm, 7.00 - 4.00pm The wages are excellent, No hassle or stress and all local work, I often speak to class 1 drivers on the industrial estate i work at and they all moan about the poor wages and hassle of the job. I would not take a wage cut to go back on class 1 again and all the shite that comes with it..

This is the vid I was looking for. I wanted to drive HGVs but majority of workers currently in the industry are very negative towards the work/life ratio which is crap... I love my free time and i dont want to be out of my house more than 50hrs per week unless its my choosing. Thank you
I've just got my class 2 and this is exactly why I don't fancy class one. Each to their own but being away from home like that isn't for me

I have a class 1 license and for a same reason as you I rather drive class 2 with more consistent hours and way less troubles on road! Loved the video!

Kevin, great Vlog. I currently drive a 3.5T van. Did work as self employed courier for Amazon got sick of the very late finishes and really early starts. Like the class one's you're at the mercy of the DSP, mine was scheduling 25 stops an hour for 9 hours... for 120 quid a day. Invariably you ended up way behind schedule. They just say drive quicker... that's why white van man is usually driving like a feckless eejit.
These days working as I say on 3.5T, Mon -Fri, give us tacho hours so breaks are scheduled... ish...
Always start at 0700, today was a great day... 3 jobs Dundee, St Andrews and Aberdeen got back to our yard for 1730. Get a fixed wage so no matter what same money goes in the bank each month ... only downside is i get stupid days where I'm crisscrossing Scotland and chasing my tail trying to keep to schedule. But hell this is better than 0630 rock up at Amazon depot, kick heels in van for a good few hours (latest i got off an Amazon yard was 1300, with 156 stops to do in rural Stirlingshire...) won't ever go back to Amazon not even to do a flex run.. Not worth the effort or grief... Or risking points on the licence.
Keep the vlogs coming mate. Glad to see subtitles back on your vlog. Noticed you, TruckerJenko and Luke C all seemed to lose the subtitles a few weeks ago. This is the first one in a while to have them usually they're auto generated but TH-cam was displaying auto generated subtitles were unavailable. Frustrating when you're a deaf git like me.
Really enjoyed your video very interesting, I'm retired now drove both 1 and 2 and your right on 2 I was always home by 5pm but on class 1 never very much at home but had a family to support so was a must for extra cash , anyway my boss put all class 2 vehicles of the road so had no choice had to sit my class 1 which passed first time drove for 30 years before retiring, no regrets sort of miss the banter with other drivers ,but that's life good luck to you!👍🙂
You know what its abit like Luke C he started off in a Class 2 made the move up to Class 1 then back down again and is now on Class 1 again, it can mix it up abit for you guys as well so that can experience different aspects of the job in either class of the job
Enjoyed that vlog.....as always Kevtee. I get where you are coming from with 1 versus 2. I don't actually totally agree because the argument is for me general v own account. Gener haulage has a history of low wages and you make the money up by 70 hours plus expenses. Own account is often better paid but may be a bit more routine. I have done both (retired now) and for me I would do tramping everytime. I have done it at 7.5t, class 2/3 and also class 1. All 3 types were 70 hours a week average. I did have a spell at class2/3 own account and that was max 55hours(occasionally 60) with 2 nights out for the same money I was getting on general which was mon- sat or sun-fri. However the regularity actually finished me off (same run twice a week, every week) and I went back to general UK with a bit of Western Europe thrown in. As you rightly say it is a way of life, but with the right person at home holding the fort, it can work. As my wife said (and still tells folk) she knew I was doing it to pay the bills. Kids are grown up now and me and the wife are still together and happy. It can work for some but not all. My advice though would be to do Europe before you have any major commitments and are young and single. Thanks for your time. (Got to admit though I like the idea of what you are doing. Seems a good job at Trent's).
Hi Kev really enjoyed your take on class 1 or class 2 I have both (on my license, retired now) enjoyed doing both however, I agree with you spending night after night in the truck is no life when you have a family! My last job was doing multi drop shop deliveries around the South West and loved every minute of it, home every night (usually, with the odd exception) and weekends at home. Unfortunately a work related accident caused me to retire early, but I still have a hankering for a drive of a truck, it’s in the blood I’m afraid! I'm happy to walk from one job to another, I've always earned 30-40k rarely do nights out class 2 work.
No interest in going to class 1 for a pound an hour more.
Half my driving life has been agency, I've just left a full-time job to go back on the agency.
More money, more variety and 10- 11 hour day.
Everything so true on this video. I am class 1 I now drive class 2 in the South East it's more pay 15 pound an hour + 2500 bonus a year. Guaranteed 48 hours a week, nearly 40000 a year always finished by 14.00 everyday. I'm not interested in ever driving class 1 again.
The coach industry is the same, unsociable hours stuck in traffic not knowing if you will get back in time for things. At least you stay in hotels if organisers remember to book them, then looking for parking. You have company with passengers good and bad ones. I do part time driving so get you have an idea of job beforehand so can say yes or no. I also have class one but only look at class 2 jobs, someone said to me with class 2 the load area remains with you ( pre drop bodies) where as you can leave a trailer and go to next job with class 1 if you get what I mean. Hey man thanks for the insight, I've just passed my Class 2 and am chomping at the bit to get a job and get out of my current position. I work in retail and am on the road a lot, very similar to the class 1 situation I don't know where I am from week to week. Bristol one week Norwich the next so a lot of driving and 10 hours a day in shop. it's not conducive to a good family life and has caused problems Based on your experience I'll stick to class 2. Be safe man.
I'm right now thinking it over in my head to go HGV 1 or 2. The new changes to the license test have give me a decision to make. 2 is my preferred choice. I don't think I'm cut out for the extra drama involved with a 1 truck. I've been picky as I can be with jobs driving. Because a lot of these employers are absolutely criminal in their lack of care for their drivers. You may be receiving good pay, but really, 16 hours and even 17 hours (on the hottest day of the year). This wrecks not only your relationships, but your health. I am going to take the right choice for me, which is to drive HGV2, leveling up my health and home life.

Been there, not sure which way to go. In the end have done class2. And now hopefully will job offed after interview 10 to12hour days home each night at home Monday to Friday think I would it hard to find them hours on class 1
When I was 16 I did work experience at my uncles coach company. Got friendly with one of the drivers and he said to my tramping is a young mans game for all the reasons you said.
He told me that when you start a family or get a little older you need to switch to day work. Now obviously this is a generalisation but he was spot.

Another great vlog mate, I always nearly catch up then fall behind again ;-) The first car you collected (Astra) looked to be a tidy motor and sounded bang on, I certainly would have bought it!! 140K is nothing for a 1.9 diesel, my Vectra is a 1.9 diesel and currently sits on 230k!! Still going strong ;-) Been thinking of doing my HGV & I think Class 2 would be better for me as I have a 4 year old daughter & a 15 year old step son, would sooner spend time with them & the misses than be alone in a tin can all week. You made the right decision mate that's for sure :-) Hope you & your family are all keeping well :-) P.S. Them outtakes mate, funny as!!

I know this is an old video but you've given me food for thought.. I'm 52 from an IT background and now need to find another job.. Thinking about retraining to become a Class1-2 Driver to see me out till I retire. I love driving and sure I would love to do this but now I'm not sure as the money looks shit. if I could make £18 to £20 an hour I would be happy but this looks a dead end to me.. I am not an HGV driver never been one, I left the UK 17 years ago and went to Bulgaria, I can not believe the number of cars there now in the UK, the place is a nightmare now.

Like you say Kev there's a few companies out there that milk you, I worked few years ago for a dodgy food company, vehicles crap & hours long on day rate, worked out to be about £4.50 a hour!!
Got home had my tea & to bed, no life.
I wasn't there long, I now drive minibuses for schools, love it & no stress!

I know what you mean, i recently left my job as a bus driver because of the shit hours & short turnaround in shift and had the same sort of feeling that time is key. I was only doing 42 hours a week and was exhausted so 70 hours must have been awful for you! Good choice kev 👍
Ive just left the busses after 14years when my wife wanted to go to work full time about 6 months ago at the time it felt like winning the lotto but we struggling a bit now

I've done 30 years tramping on car transporters you've done a good thing going on class 2 less stressful if you're happier go for it the ratchets on the scanias you can use VW Beetle jack handles if you have any in that yard they are ideal for the job

Totally agree its upto the individual, I was with enterprise flex e rent got £1460 a month for delivery and collection plus driving recovery truck. So I decided to move on to a new job class 1 starting January hope all works out.

True about the wages you forget to mention the companies that pay a salary and expect you to work all the hours and when you work it out you are doing it for minimum wage. I drive a 7.5 part time for 10.00 ph day work , my brother drives an artic tramping Mon-Fri/Sat for 9.00 ph salaried. I keep telling him get out of the job. Depends entirely on what driving job you're doing with either class 1 or 2.
I'm class 2 and every shift, I'm going to places you wouldn't think a HGV would get to!
It can be stressful if you let it but I enjoy it and I enjoy the variety. Even our class 1 drivers are going to places where a car would struggle! Their routes are always the same though which I know would bore me after a few weeks!
I would say decide what type of job that interests you and then go from there.
Lots of good driving jobs out there but there's just as many bad ones which can easily put you off for life!!

I understand what you saying my cousin works for Sam worth’s driving class 1 but he usually works nights but is Hom every day but works for him and still get to see his kids every day and money isn’t too bad
Annoy the friend of my has just re employed his mate after many year as he lost his license and he gives it “I could earn more driving” was on class 1 car transport however he’s used to do nights out most night and do mental hours now he’s home by 5:00 pm most nights tarmac laying and groundwork for the council, some people don’t seem to get it In my opinion seems to be the trend that if your on class 1 doesn’t seem to pay what it should really for all

Genuinely interesting to hear your thoughts on class 1 vs class 2. I was made redundant in September thanks to COVID so I am in the process of getting my class 2 (test on December 7th) I have a young family and would prefer to do day work. I would like to get my class 1 as well as any other qualifications that make more employable but it’s expensive and money don’t grow on trees. I feel better about sticking with class 2 for a while having heard your thoughts so thanks and wish me luck 🤞🏻
