Oh this is taking an interesting turn in the TD genre, not just using plain currency but using an actual economy to build defenses, very intriguing concept. Im definitely pouring some time into this when it gets full release 😊
Splat hit the nail on the head, its rare to find something new and refreshing in TD games. I stopped buying them a while ago and now I may actually look at getting this one.
Mindustry is a good one if you haven't heard of it! It was so good that I decided to pay for it to pay respect to the dev! (It's available completely free)
Been playing the demo and it's quite promising. Excited for the release version. Surprised about the amount of QOL and polish already in the demo. Seems like the devs gave this some actual thought. Especially love the focus priority mechanic, so many options for every individual tower. Gives a nice amount of control for min-maxers like myself
I was screaming that at one point. :) Also. The Arc Tower might be the best tower in the game right now just level firerate and then you need as many proc banners as possible, The banners that give more damage to enemies about 70% health should be 2nd priority and more jumps third. Depending on the luck with the banners it can fail at wave 10. But if it does not the damage can get insane. No other towers needed. Only Arc. Edit: Just noticed that they nerfed the Lightning Surge banner. :( So might not be that insane anymore.
It should be noted: Nordhold: Origins is a free prologue demo for the full game (Nordhold) which is coming out Q1 2025. I'm pretty sure I glimpsed toggleable building aesthetics early in the video as well?

Splatty you probably don't want to take the extra dmg on enemies at >70% (iirc) hp and then put another tower right in front of the arc tower that will essentially bring all the enemies below that threshold before they get to it... 😉
I tried focusing on workshop buffs to reduce the time to upgrade the towers, then to auto-upgrade damage. Worked out pretty well. Basically all Runestone damage with the raven going for the bosses.
TD is one of my favorite genres. Yet I agree that it has mostly been stagnant over the last 10-15 years. A few standout titles have been: Orcs Must Die, Sanctum, and Deathtrap, each of which I highly recommend. Still, each of those is several years old, at best--though OMD is an evolving series.
I love the Kingdom rush series. Gives a good account of involvement during the waves with controlling the hero and using powers as well as building towers
If you want an innovative tower defense game, you've GOT to check out Defender's Quest Valley of the Forgotten. One of the best games I've ever played.
Oik, this might just be a TD I will finally play after years. I can'ty even remember the last one I played. EDIT: yeah, just came back from one session after playing the demo. I like it.
Even this demo is much better than expected, just sad it ends on the end of wave 20. Just finished it after like 10hr with 10 workers making 500+ stone in 1 turn 😁
One sad thing about tower defense games is that we don't see more gameplay mechanics like in Arknights, where you can deploy "blocker" units in the path of enemies to attack and stall them so your high ground "tower" units can destroy them, and mechanics where you have to defend your towers and repair them from damage or be careful when and where you kill enemies due to on-death effects and triggers. There's an enormous amount of room for creativity in the tower defense genre and most of it boils down to slight variations on the same idea.
I hadn't played a tower defense since the good ol WC3 days. Winter Maul 3 and all the rest. This game was great. Exactly what I was looking for. It scratched an itch I didn't know I had and then...it ended. Damn this being a demo! I ran through a few different ones out there and Emberward was the only one that kind of came close. Guess I'm waiting till "1st Q 2025".
Oh that looks fun. Already had to go get a game in. There was another TD game where they were mixing TD and Factorio like resource automation. These combos are really fun.
Splat doesnt like the genres I play like card games, autobattlers and now TD so when he posts a vid on any of these games I know its gonna be a bange 😂 This game reminds me of Super fantasy kingdom and Rogue tower mashed together

Splat you gotta cover Night Raiders. Zero Sievert adjacent with some deep unlockable progressions in the quest tree. It'll take days to unlock the whole game even if you're really good at it Would make great streaming content.
1. I could have sworn I've played a game exactly like this one ages ago, just minus the town aspect. Maybe a phone game? 2. The economy aspect is nice, but honestly tower defense games only get really good when they allow you to maze yourself and manipulate pathing. This is why Sanctum is good, and the best TD's are in WC3.
I also got introduced to TD in the time of Warcraft3/StarCraft1. Some of my all time favorite TDs were in WC3, and yes, mazing is something I miss in any TD that doesn't have it. In games like this one where the path and terrain (high ground) is procedurally generated, I find I don't miss mazing quite as much as I do on games that have static maps. One TD that I like recently is called Isle of Arrows. It's a Tower Defense that takes some ideas from Dorfromantik and adds a splash of roguelite metaprogression and RNG. The graphics are pretty basic but I'll take good gameplay over fancy graphics any day!

I hate how the Tower Defense genre grew up from the original warcraft 3 custom maps. The best part there was that you were building the maze yourself out of towers, not just choosing what tower to put on your predefined tower-spots.
You don't cover games with AI assets? That's kinda silly. Soon you won't be able to cover any games at all - the future is AI - it's kinda like saying you won't make a video without editing software.
Splatt has a pretty detailed explanation as to why he doesn't promote AI using content. As of right now, AI is pretty weak in game asset creation, and I say that as someone who is majorly pro AI art. He seems to dislike it for mostly the right reasons, like displacing Artists. AI has a very uphill battle to push through based on how it was conceived, in order to come out from behind the hate.
@@miclowgunman1987that's the same argument about people losing jobs since the dawn of technology. People weren't happy with the combine harvester either. It's just silly. Yes you will lose your job to AI as will many other professions. Including mine. It's ok, do something else. The world turns.
@@BrendenEngelbrecht Sure, replacing creative and artistic professions by AI while still having underpaid humans do grunt work is real progress ! But AI is just a tool, the problem is how it is used, it reminds me of GMO and the "terminator" seeds. We'll see if it ends the same way.
So there can't be technological progress until there's no more underpaid humans - that's where your argument leads if you take it to it's end. That's so gloriously silly it doesn't need a rebuttal.

The game is fun I enjoyed it. One tip Id say for later waves is to make sure you have your ALL of your forward towers focus on minions that spawn more minions .. its even good to have the raven towers focus them down too.. they simply must die early on in the wave. Also until you unlock all you can with your Honor you probably will not ' WIN ' the game.. but I do think it is fun.

I'd add Kingdom Rush and Defense Grid. At elast Kingdom Rush for simplicity and aesthetics.
They Are Billions killed everything else in the genre for me. One other I really got into was Dugeon Warfare 1 & 2.
this is like Rogue Tower but with richer graphics and more of a sense of purpose.
Now that's a unique kind of roguelike + tower defense genre I can get behind! Wishlisted.

From what the description says, Penetration doesn't counter Block, it counters Armor. I assume that Accuracy counters Block.
