That’s good news for me. I severed a wrist tendon in my teens and its flexion/ ROM has been limited since. False grip is out of the question so it sounds like trying straight bar MUs are for me. Thanks Simon!

The video should be called "Can you muscle up with a false grip" because false grip is SO MUCH MORE DIFFICULT than regular grip. Idk how people do muscle ups on a bar with false grip

You know what's important in the bar muscle up too? The bar thickness. Im stunned how a little more grip can provide greater results. I have been doing muscle ups consistently in two parks, one has a thick bar, not great for transition, and the other is a bit less thick, easier, but they aren't still great. Two days ago i did muscle ups in a beach park, the bar had the perfect thickness, the paint was a little off, but the muscle ups turned out to be great, i did them so flawlessly, i was amazed.

False Grip is absolutely optional - this accounts for pretty much all muscle up variations. Although, a false grip is helpful for RMUs and Slow BMUs, it certaintly is possible to do them safely while being in a more compromised wrist position. Not that I would recommend it for everyone, but with appropriate conditioning you could absolutely do them without a false grip. Speaking in terms of physics, these movements can be executed regardless of the wrist position. From a biomechanical standpoint we compromise performance and make force production and the lever less efficient.

if you can hang your pullup bar in a way that it spins with you wont need to false grip. my bar hangs from one rope loop on each side so the bar spins with my grip. or if u make rectangle shaped workout rings like mine check out ( muscle up training no false grip required) its easier if u watch rather than me explaining how it works

what matters most for me is the adherence on the bar. i have sweaty hands, and any umidity hinders my pullups and m'up attempts greatly. don't know what to do :/

Try some chalk, liquid chalk, or grips.

I love Pere Coll's muscle up post on his website. He writes that overhand grip puts you in a position to be most explosive(compared to the regular grip-for pull ups, and to the false grip-for ring muscle ups). And for the bar muscle up you need to be explosive, especially if done weighted

When I was younger I used to be be able to do 12 muscle ups and I don’t ever remember using a bent wrist to start

But now I kinda want to get good at arm wrestling so I’ll hold a bent wrist on the bar

That side view with the two grips on screen at the same time is the only demonstration I've seen that has made it click for me how this grip is possible, lol. Thank you. 🙏🏾

It's not about the thickness of the bar in your video, you're doing the neutral grip on a bar / rings if you're going up explosive so that it will bring you heigh enough to get into the rotation and push position. If you're going up slow and controlled and do it without the help of swinging/explosive force, you'll always need the false grip, otherwise you will simply not be able to rotate upwards as you lack anything to ground your force on.
