They say Clevelands pitching was not all that in that 1997 season. It must of been better than what they say being it carried them to game 7 of the world series that year. Mind you I'm not even a Indians fan...
As a Yankee fan, the Indians had decent pitching but they had such a good offensive lineup that it carried their pitchers a lot. Nagy, Wright, Hershisher. They had pitching but it was mainly their offensive juggernaut lineup that carried them in 97 until losing in WS to Marlins 😊. Both teams were really good that year. Especially the 1997 Yankees. They were trying to go back to back titles after winning in 1996. But then they come back in 1998 for the 3 peat. Then losing in 2001 and 2003 and winning in 2009 but yeah.
Indians' pitching staff was ranked 9th (out of 14 AL teams) in ERA and FIP - both bottom half. So their pitching was not all that, their bats carried them that year.
"Again Tonight" by John Cougar Mellancamp. That was the Jacobs Field victory song. When the Indians lost at the Jake, they played "Can't Stand Losing You" by the Police.
Yes, playing that Mellencamp song after a win is classic-- been doing that since 1995, I believe (when the Tribe was SO good at home-- every night they'd win, it seemed, thus the song, "Again Tonight", i.e., another win for the Tribe again tonight). And, ever since its opening year in 1994, the Jake/Prog has been playing "Just One Victory" by Todd Rundgren as the last song before closing the park.
Mesa is an unfair scapegoat for the Game 7 loss. I hate to say it, but the loss is more on Fernandez for his error in the final inning and Alomar for failing to run hard to home in the later innings when we (Indians) could have gotten a key insurance run in that game. Don't want to hate on Fernandez and Alomar too much since they were heroic throughout the year, but it is what it is.
Thank you for uploading games 4 & 5 of this series. Do you have the 9/23/1988 Red Sox-Yankees game at Yankee Stadium? I've been trying to find it for years.
Yankees lost this series because of the format for the Division Series. It was 2-3. Awful format. Then it was 2-2-1. How they let Indians get 3 straight in a 5 game series. Bad format. 1997 Yankees were really good compared to the 1996 championship team but Infians were too good in 1997. Yes the 1998 Yankees were too good and better than the 96 and 97 Yankee teams with that 114 win season. Historic record.
That series was a lot closer than meets the eye. The Tribe was up 2-1 after game 3. Remember game 2 in New York when Chuck Knoblauch missed the tag on the base runner in the 11th which let the Indians score the go-ahead run.
This one really Hurt! The Yankees lost this game and series on a blown call at the plate in the 5th. GD, Alomar never touched the plate!!! Score should have remained 3 -3.
There have been few ALDS series I've seen that can compare to this one.
