This was the first time I've ever seen Claude Akins in a role that he didn't creep me out. He played a real bad guy in an earlier Bonanza episode, as well as many other rough characters in several other TV westerns & dramas. Nice to see him with a smile on his face for a change, rather than a sneer.
I saw 👀 The Mill movie 🍿 on Bonanza and he was so good playing a bad, evil 👿 man that it made me hate him. Yesterday I saw on the playlist for the Bonanza movie 🍿 The Mill. I had an idea 💡 that might be the same movie and when I knew for certain that it was, I didn’t watch it. 👎👎
I love Claud Akins. He’s one of my favorite actors. He plays the most horrible bad evil man in the Bonanza movie The Mill I’ve seen it twice and I can’t remember seeing such an evil man in any other movie. 😮😮😮
lots of women would be attracted to Akins...he was even a joke on the golden girls,,,,when Dorothy...Bea Arthur,,,walks into a bar and is asked "whats your pleasure?" she responds..."claud akins on a water bed"
1:56 I think that barn is bigger on the inside! I don't recall ever seeing this view of it. An interesting intro. Claude Akins looks so young! I bet that he will be perfect for this role.
Claude Skins played in the he episode The Mill. He was good in that too. Also the one when he was a Marshall taking an escape prisoner back to jail also good in that.
Claude Akins (Convoy) and Edgar Buchanan (Peticoat Junction) ahhhhh what a great TV series Bonanza was so much fun and watchmacallit .... ahhhhh i love watching these old movies ....
This episode was an unsold pilot for a TV show. But in this episode, Sam Hill was made out to be a friend of the Cartwrights who came by every now and then, yet this is the only time he appears during the entirety of the series. It was the same thing with little joe's half brother; seen once and never heard of or spoken of again. Hell, the same applied to all the friends and distant relatives who appeared. Seen once, never again. Even the neighboring ranches where never the same people across multiple episodes. Will Cartwright had 5 episodes in season 5. After that, not one single sentence with his name was mentioned.
The one thing that did re appear was that photograph of Sam Hills' mother. It was in a previous episode in which it was depicted as a photo of Little Joe's mother.
Yes, this! It seems like almost every episode they are encountering an old very close dear friend of Ben with hugs and big hellos or friend of the lads or a really well known neighbor that they talk to like they see them every day. But then they're never to be seen or heard of again. It's like there is a serial killer hanging around the Ponderosa who's bent on killing everyone they know lol. Well I don't mind too much, it does leave things open for a non stop train of interesting actors to appear on the show , keeping it fresh. But you'd think they could address this just a little bit? Like perhaps having just the occasional one reappear would be quite nice. There was Candy and Coffee but they are in different categories.
Yes, claude akins one the the great Western 'baddies' and has a cool distinctive walk to match Henry fonda, John Wayne, clint Eastwood and Robert mitchum🚶🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂️
A lot of people are talking about Claude Akins but what about ED Buchanan uncle Joe on petticoat junction. This is one of the finest acting jobs I’ve seen and I’ve been watching him for 45. years.
1:00 There's no way they could hear Sam pounding a hammer with very little swing due to him driving a wagon, over the vast distance he travelled while a storm was going. 1:22 Wow that crazed look on Hoss' face. Epic, and should be a meme. 10:35 "Are you up too?" "I'm sure not sleep walking" Haha, that was one of the more catty remarks I've heard from Ben.
I did some research on Sam Hill and apparently there were a couple people who had the same name and whose legacy would fit the bill for this episode which does contain some fictionalised embellishments. Nevertheless I love how this show gets me interested in all the local history! I wonder if maybe there's other western places names with a mysterious history that can be attributed to real people, like (and you hear about this a LOT on the internet) about Bell's Canyon. Strange people wantering out west asking complete strangers "DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO BELL'S CANYON?" in a loud and booming voice, and freaking them out.
This episode had the last title card that appeared by itself. Beginning with the next episode (The Smiler), the producer-writer-director credits would be shown immediately following the title card instead of in the closing credits.
Great observation, it took me a while to figure out wha tyou meant but now I got it. After this writer and director at the beginning. I like it better that way too.
Wait. 11:30 Ben said they need to get some sleep or they won't be able to do any work tomorrow. But at the beginning of the same scene, Joe said it's an hour before sunrise. Will somebody tell me exactly what time it is??? lol
One of the goofier episodes. Who came up with that silly opening? Some thunder breaks and the whole family runs outside because some guy they know is always preceded by thunder and lightning every time he drops by, like some kind of super hero out of a comic book. Hoss starts pounding an anvil with a sledge hammer and Sam Hill does the same beating faster & faster but Hoss falls down unable to keep up and says "No one can sling a sledge faster than ole Sam Hill". But what do you expect when Hoss is swinging a 3 foot long handle sledge and Sam's sledge is 12 inches long. In the final scene some stranger suddenly appears playing a guitar riding in on a donkey and Sam's father says the guy's been following him around since the guy was 6 or 7 years old, so Sam says "Oh well, let him climb up on the wagon then". And they all head down the road together with Hoss and Little Joe furiously pounding away on an anvil again. Similar silliness supercedes sensible scenarios supplanting severely suffering same-type situations.
Yea the ending and beginning were pretty friggen ridiculous. Although the craziness and randomness of the ending was somewhat explained by the fact that it was supposed to be the pilot of a spinoff series. I guess we'd find out more about that guy who was following him and go along with them on their adventures. As silly as this was I wouldn't mind seeing an episode or two of that.
Sure wouldn't have him living with me either might take him back to the ocean to catch the next ship out. If I was n a good mood. Probably just call him Johnny too. Definitely would not fit in with the Cartwrights.
Well I don't suffer from this family mother and father worship that these boys do. I sure wouldn't be giving him a bath but I would probably tell him whatever you do don't sell that land. Dale

Yup! He usually represents the spirit of EVIL! 😆
I hated him in The Mill episode
And I didn't care for his character in Desert Justice

He certainly did have an evil laugh in the Mill didn't he, was good to hear that laugh in a non evil way,lol

What a great actor Claude Akins was. I'll watch anything with him in it. One of the best Bonanza episodes I've seen yet.
Edgar Buchanan was also a great old character actor! 👍
Aikens was actually in several Bonanza episodes as various characters. This was his biggest role though, I think.
You should see the Virginian that he played in one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen in my life
Remember Wells Fargo Jim was always after him
Claude Akins was always a terrific actor !!! I thought that I had seen all of the Bonanza episodes, but I don't remember this one.
Good episode.
Mysteriously interesting episode. I loved to see Adam laughing so much! I've watched this episode multiple times, but I still enjoy it thoroughly.
WOW 😯 and double WOW 🤩. What a movie!!!😊😊😊Sam Hill. What a man. 😊
Wonderful open scene. My favorite.
Claude Akins played a character that seemed to embody Thor - the mythological hammer-wielding Norse god of thunder and lightning! of

Don't you just LOVE them one and all!!!????!!
Great episode, this was a rarely aired episode. In fact I only remember seeing it one time when Bonanza went into syndication in Sept 1972.
I can see why it's pretty weird.
Edgar Buchanan as Mr. Hill is hilarious running thru that bar with that champagne!😅 and Claude Atkins is looking mighty fine

Best episode ever! Amazing that many of the folks on Bonanza were historically real!
Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Albert Michelson to name a few.
1:56 I think that barn is bigger on the inside! I don't recall ever seeing this view of it. An interesting intro. Claude Akins looks so young! I bet that he will be perfect for this role.
An extremely great touching story, of a legend Sam Hill., even thru it was a story.
From Down Under

Claude Skins played in the he episode The Mill. He was good in that too. Also the one when he was a Marshall taking an escape prisoner back to jail also good in that.

Fun Fact... some of the background music in this episode was also used in the Season 8 Finale of Little House on the Prairie about 20 years later!
Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing this old series.
Best regards luck and health.
Love Claude Akins in this episode!
That beautiful white horse looks like the one Joe was getting for Ben in The Gift episode.
There's a lot of warmth in that ground. One of the best lines ever written
into a Television show script ever. 😢😢
Jackpot Edgar and Claude two favorite actors. 'Sam Hill' was an unsold spinoff pilot.
Thanks for uploading this episode
Love this episode. Thank you.
Happy you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and keep your eyes open, we upload a new episode of Bonanza EVERYDAY! 🤠👌

because the show wasnt about those people..none of them...just an episode or so...were...
Michael Landon didn't want a more handsome main character than his Little Joe, so he had Guy Williams (who played Will Cartwright) fired.
The one thing that did re appear was that photograph of Sam Hills' mother. It was in a previous episode in which it was depicted as a photo of Little Joe's mother.

That little, tiny scene between Little Joe and the saloon girl was sorta cute. Little Joe is a mess and she was funny😊.
Pretty sure that was Flo from Alice.
This was a great episode.
That there was dadburn good episode right there lemme tell ya..!

I just watched an episode titled, The Gift, with the same albino horse in it that Little Joe shot.
Claude Akins almost always plays the bad guy. Very good actor. Nice looking in a rugged way…
Claude Akins reminds me of Andy Griffith.
I wonder how many different actors and actresses Bonanza helped in their etiquette of the theater?
A lot of people are talking about Claude Akins but what about ED Buchanan uncle Joe on petticoat junction. This is one of the finest acting jobs I’ve seen and I’ve been watching him for 45. years.
Gosh dangit, some of these shows are better than great!
A contract is illegal ... null and void ... if a man signs it while incapacitated ... for any reason ... including being inebriated.
That's true NOW, but it might not have been true in the West in 1861.
1:00 There's no way they could hear Sam pounding a hammer with very little swing due to him driving a wagon, over the vast distance he travelled while a storm was going.

But it was Sam Hill, so his hammer could be heard. ;)
great GREAT opening!
the shows Finest!
So that's where the term "What in the Sam Hill?" comes from. I love learning US history from this show.

Claude Akins was a Cherokee American Indian. 😊😊😊😊😊
That was a good episode.

I liked Claude Akins he played Sheriff Lobo
I feel like Claude Akins was perfect for this role
Absolutely 💯🤗 love Bonanza
I live near Humansville, Missouri where Edgar Buchanan was born...that makes us practically related.
It’s like Sam Will has some kind of power over that land or an act of god keeping evil off of it
It's was Funny how His Dad was Broke, But getting a Nice Hotel Room & Ordering 🥂 with no money.lol
hahah great point. And it's not likeed he looked well to do either. Another plot hole in this one.
Hi 🙋♀️ this is a very nice 👍🏻
An episode where no one died .
True, but the plot is built around a deceased woman.

Real cowboys only need 30 mins a night
Probably because the writers the episode thought that no now would notice!

The photograph of Sam Hill's mother was the same one that was used for Little Joe's mother in a different episode.
And that Tyson, what a sorry bastard. He wasn't a colonel. He was a disgrace to the uniform

Like the legends of Paul Bunyan and John Henry.
Nothing wrong with telling a tall tale.

Good one 😊👍
@14:54 Isn't that the same photo in First Born that is suppose to be Little Joe's mother?
Yep that is!
Wonder who it really was 🤔 my bet is production office or something along them ways.
Omg Joe is truly beautiful. I wish he'd kiss my hand and call me "honey".
Joe? Adam is the hottest thing in the west!
@@noneyun9943 Yeah, Adam's OK. Quite handsome, but if I had a choice, it'd be Joe every time.

That thing with hoss and hill with the anvil is kinda strange.

@@laquondamorris3396 sometimes you have to fall down to get up
I think the writers must have been tripping on acid when they wrote this episode.
It's odd that Sam Hill's mother looks just like Lil'Joe's mother in the picture.

No, Joe's mama, I thinks.
Sammmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn’t understand why Sam was driving those stakes!
Ohhh the warm springs!!!
That and he had to constantly be hammering something it seemed lol
Does anyone please know which Bonanza episode has a camel in it please? 🐫🙏
Akins was made to be a Cowboy …
Directed by Robert Altman. That name sounds familiar.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sure would like to know the name of the song the guy was singing at the end of the episode he was riding a donkey
It's just a song adapted for the show by David Rose. His orchestra arranged all of the music for Bonanza. Cool little tune though.
I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A 😊 BATHTUB LIKE THE ONE THEY SHOW ON THIS EPISODE 🛁
What’s that song that guy was singing?
Mt favorite 1 😊 🤎 🐎
Wasn't that picture he picked up little Joe's mom

I thought he was going to say Noahs flood . They found whale bones up on a mtn . THE FLOOD Jesus is real
"what in the Sam Hill ?"

Sam Hill
Sam Hill should have been played by a far larger man than Akins, I would have cast Robert Wadlow
Season 3
Season 3 will starting tomorrow. :)
Who thought about adding the singer at the end?! That was bizarre, uncharacteristic for this show.
