I've been making this for quite a while now. Instead of water or stock, I braise the red cabbage/apple/onion mixture in apple juice with some cinnamon. It comes out absolutely delicious!!!
I’ve made braised red cabbage a number of times but thought I’d seek out a new recipe to try. Just made this, following to a tee, and it rocks! Great balance of flavors and my wife is going to love the apples! Smothered pork chops and white rice with this cabbage for dinner tonight. Great recipe!
I saw this recipe without covering and steaming the cabbage and it retained the color a lot better but with constant stirring. I think this is very practical.
I make this dish on a regular basis! A couple thoughts. First, I recommend using a mandolin with the thinnest blade setting. The end texture is by far the best. Even when I do my best to make uniform angel hair ribbons with a chef’s knife, they just can’t quite match the texture I get from the mandolin. Second, I do recommend the addition of a pinch of clove, a pinch of caraway, and a pinch of celery seed. Go easy on all three, but you’ll be happy you added them. Finally, I add a knob of butter at the very end.
@@melissajarvis4829 I did it today with green cabbage, juniper berries, cloves and caraway and it works. In my supermarket, they didn't have any red cabbage today, so I had to take green or something entirely else.
My mother was from Belgium and this is pretty much her recipe. She added a bay leaf while cooking. She would most often serve this with pork or sometimes with chicken. Yum!
I love cabbage!! Growing up in a German/Polish family, it was a staple in our house. My Polish grandmother stuffed buttered green cabbage in her Pierogi recipe. Delicious!
This is a delicious recipe. Make sure you cook it low and slow once you've added all the ingredients and have cooked the apples and onions to translucency. If it's too liquidy for you use some a tsp of corn starch with a couple tablespoons of water. There's many German cooks making this on YT with different area's of the country for sweeter or sour recipe versions. Enjoy
I'm about to go cook this, never had apple with onions! Apple cider vinegar is very good with other cabbage recipes as well, there's one recipe that uses ACV, mayo, sugar, celery seed and can't recall if there was anything else but so good. I think it's called ( Seriously good coleslaw) on TH-cam JoAnne and her husband makes it. It's so good.
Thank you for this great recipe. I never thought of adding apples to sweet-sour cabbage. However, when my children were small, they used to insist on trying the foods mentioned in "Farmer Boy," the story of Almanzo Wilder. They would eat anything if it was something that Almanzo ate. We all loved fried apples 'n' onions, and still do.
I also add 1/8 tsp clove (Or less) and 1/2 cup home made bacon bits to mine. Taste just like Germay. The way my mum used to make it. Now I make it for her! Yum.
My mom used to make this a lot when I was a little girl. I never got the recipe but this is very close she used white vinegar but I will use the apple cider vinegar and I’m adding cloves. She used cloves. Thank you. She was Dutch.
Hi Sarah, I love red cabbage and I also cook it at the same way like you do. I add little pieces of smoked bacon, too in the pot and it smells fantastic.Bravissima Sarah☺😚
I too prefer chopping with knife than binging out the food factory. It looks very interesting and tasty am def going to make it tomorrow it’s one of the veg my daughter can have without reactions and another daughter just loves cabbages Thank you
Talk about a timeless book series! I got a set of the Little House books when I was a kid. Although now I can't remember if I got them from mom or grandma.
Nice, I've always seen this recipe floating around and never tried to make it before and wow, I had no idea it was this easy. I personally love red cabbage and wish there were more recipes for it. Also, something I've recently discovered that is so easy to do is to steam sliced cabbage (or any vegetable) in my ricecooker tray while the rice cooks - maybe that'll help someone else start to eat more vegetables too haha
deartotheheart I found a recipe, o think from Shira Bocar (on this channel) for salmon with mustard + horseradish, with roasted red cabbage and little potatoes, all cooked together in the same pan. My boyfriend & I love it, so tasty. Definitely recommend.
Just wondering, what brand of kitchen knives do you use? Mine are so old and I want to treat myself to a new set. Any advice would be great; thank you!
Would love to know the size and make of the knife you're using in this video. Looks like a 9 or 10 inch Santoku but I know some chef's knives how have grantons too. What is the brand. I can actually hear how good it is. :)
Any canners out there? I bet you could make a batch and can it but what would you use as a liquid. Doesn’t seem to be much liquid left after braiding ... you could do a small pot OD just the liquid ... thoughts?
Ingredients 1 tablespoon butter 1 medium onion, halved and thinly sliced 1 Gala or Fuji apple, halved, cored, and sliced 1 head red cabbage (2 pounds), cored, quartered, and thinly sliced Coarse salt and ground pepper 3 tablespoons cider vinegar 4 teaspoons sugar ½ cup water Add bay leaf, cloves and caraway + a knot of butter at the end.
Pro tip: if you feel like your cast iron takes too long to heat up on the stove, put it in a cold oven and preheat to 375°F. By the time you finish your mise en place, the oven will have reached temperature, and your cast iron will be prime for cooking. =)
Red cabbage and apples is a better version when pickled in vinegar like sauerk. It's sweet and less sour and super refreshing. No onions in it either. It's bangin', better than warm red cabbage and apples by a mile. It's so much more refreshing. See till can use it as a side with pork chops
I saute my apple, onion, and cabbage in bacon fat, and add cooked, crumbled bacon before serving. It can (almost) be a Main Dish, depending on how hungry I am...
I never knew Rotkraut is that easy, because my german mother in law always simply warms up the one in glass jar that you find in grossery stores....... D: I got to try this recipe!
I’m always looking for veggie side dishes, this one checks all the boxes and that color is nice.
I have had a red cabbage sitting in my fridge wondering how to cook it, now I will make this tonite for dinner. Thanks Sarah.
I've been making this for quite a while now. Instead of water or stock, I braise the red cabbage/apple/onion mixture in apple juice with some cinnamon. It comes out absolutely delicious!!!
Probably one of the best straight to the point online cooking shows.
If she could cook, yes.

I'll be trying those spices, soon. Do you think I can sub green cabbage? (Out of red. ) I don't think it will be as sweet, but it would still be good?

I can tell she's a really good cook and I already love this recipe.
I too love slicing rather than processor. Cooking has always been therapeutic for me.
Gorgeous recipe
Brenda's Pampered Kitchen the sound of leaf vegetables being cut is so relaxing.

Yes, but she profanes the recipe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@yakeosicki8965 definitely not a German red cabbage recipe.
I agree with you about the good knife. Then a good pot.
I am intrigued by the idea of adding a ti y bit of clove to the recipe!
I am so happy that I found your tutorial! I am making this for a funeral luncheon on Saturday. It will be so appreciated.
I'm going to attempt to make it now. Looks delicious.

I think I am going to make this tomorrow. I am thinking about adding some caraway though.
Saw the video this afternoon and made the dish this evening. Easy prep and a delicious side dish! Thank-you for posting the video.
Thank you! 😋
We have made this recipe for years and called it Danish red cabbage. Great recipe and economical too.
Verry Dutch, love it also with little pieces of mango and pineapple! With some mashed potatoes and pork chops....
Nice ,I'm going to try this tonight thank you❤
Excellent no nonsense instructions...thank you VERY much.
I love her recipes
Thank you I will try it.
Just tried your way and it’s very good! Never added and apple, apple cider vinegar or broth, and I must say it turned out very good!

In my family, we always added a little pickling spice and juniper berries.
Made this before and it was yummy, but reading the comments makes me want to put one clove in it this time. Will try that now!

Awesome 👍 🎈
Thank you🌝
Just tried this recipe tonight using olive oil instead of butter. It's amazing! Thanks for sharing!
This is one of my favorite vegetable dishes. I use honey instead of sugar. YUM
Thank you!
In live in Germany and this recipe is exactly like the German Blaukraut or Rotkohl. Well done!
Looks good!
Looks delicious 😋
simple simple! Many Thanks!
Great dish Thank you
Have a lot of cabbage will try
This is also very popular as a side in Hungary. It is served with duck leg confit and mashed potato. 🤤
@@yakeosicki8965 So, what did she do that you don't think is correct?
I am glad you do not waste your time with mise en place BS. It is a great use of our time watching you prepare.
I love eating cabbage, and looking for some recipes. Wanna try this, thanks for sharing.😄
Wow! Such a simple recipe, it looks amazing too!
*_WoW delicious recipe_*
BEAUTIFUL .... VERY TASTY.... SHARING .....
THANK YOU EVERYDAY FOOD!
This recipe is amazing. Two thumbs up. Highly recommend. And I will add goat cheese down the line but this stands on its own. Thank you!
I've made this, but the recipe I use includes cranberry jelly, delicious!
We serve this with whole roasted duck (crispy skin), potatoes and gravy on Christmas Eve in Denmark - yum!
ooo sounds delicious!
The same in Poland with duck in Polish (duck in apples) and steamed dumplings.
I have a recipe my mother used that had a small potato grated in to act as a thickener for the juices to stick better to the cabbage.
Talk about a timeless book series! I got a set of the Little House books when I was a kid. Although now I can't remember if I got them from mom or grandma.
Thanks 😊I made this tonight whit my pork roast 😋
I feel like adding a bit of raisins (while maybe adding a bit less sugar) would be a good addition

Oh cool I love Shira so I'll definitely go check it out!
I too like red cabbage but for some reason it's 50 to 100% more expensive than green cabbage, therefore I always opt for the green.
Just tried it. Thanks a lot
thanks
Yum!!! Looks so good!
Great, easy recipe!
Good reference
Pork-chops and Apple Sauce YUMMMM
Thank you! Just cooked this dish and it's absolutely yummy!
Can I make this in advance the night before? Does it keep well?
I love the pan. What brand is it..?
I slowed this video down & played with it till I could hit right on the right frame. It's a Martha Stewart pan.
Looks goooood!

Whats the protein i can eat with this ?
aha!! I to like the process of slicing.
Love a recipe that doesn't require weird ingredients... though I did swap the apple vinegar with white wine vinegar ;) Came out nice still
Same~
You forgot the one clove that lifts the dish into a masterpiece
I was waiting for you to say ABP, but hey.. At least there's a story today.. Classic Sarah :) (sorry, been binge watching episodes for a week now)
Ingredients
1 tablespoon butter
1 medium onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 Gala or Fuji apple, halved, cored, and sliced
1 head red cabbage (2 pounds), cored, quartered, and thinly sliced
Coarse salt and ground pepper
3 tablespoons cider vinegar
4 teaspoons sugar
½ cup water
Add bay leaf, cloves and caraway + a knot of butter at the end.
Any ideas for what vegetarian or vegan main dishes this could be served with?
i will serve this with some baked potato and sweet potato wadges. Of course, i am gonna use olive oil instead of butter.
Vegan meatballs or meatloaf. Search for vegan meat crumble recipes here on TH-cam if you need it.
yum!
Was the cabbage washed?

Cabbage and bacon is great even without the apple.
Yum!😍
Can we skip the apple cider vinegar though? Its only for added flavour right
This is a slightly sweet and sour recipe. You need some acid for sour. I used lemon juice... It also preserves the red color.
I never knew Rotkraut is that easy, because my german mother in law always simply warms up the one in glass jar that you find in grossery stores....... D: I got to try this recipe!
Can you freeze the leftovers of this recipe?
In the written recipe, I believe she says it does not freeze well.
It's best second day
It is!
