That's why most airliners use the turbofan jet, which allows for a great deal of cooling...on top of the engine's design which has internal cooling (compressed air bypassing the combustion chamber). These cooling methods alone reduce the heat by over 50% If he incorporated these same method, or at least the bypass method, then it wouldn't glow like that.
You've got to have a twin-walled afterburner, so that there is a cooling layer of air flow between the inner and outer layers. That way your afterburner won't get red white hot. It might get red hot but it won't melt like yours was about to melt.
Rocket engines pump super chilled fuel thru channels in the structure to keep them cooler and from disintegrating , the heat exchange pre warms the fuel as well. You can the pattern of dark lines on launch. That’s a win/win design.
@Forrest Trump. Correct about the heat exchange but warming of the fuel was the primary design requirement. The dark portion of exhaust on an open cycle rocket engine (eg. F1 on the Saturn V 1st stage) was the exhaust from the gas generator used as boundary layer cooling. That was used to keep the exhaust bell from melting 👍
A variable area nozzle helps to adjust the exit pressure of the combustion gases to ambient pressure. When they leave the turbine, the combustion gases have still some remaining pressure which is converted into speed by a convergent contour of the nozzle.If the combustion gases have enough pressure to be accelerated to supersonic speed, the nozzle is actually first convergent and then divergent to achieve the best acceleration of the flow. The convergent, subsonic flow accelerates until in the section with the smallest area, called the throat, the speed of sound is reached, and the following divergent section accelerates the now supersonic flow further until its pressure drops to ambient pressure. This con-di-nozzle needs to adjust both the cross section of the throat and the cross section of the exit area. Failure to get especially the throat area right will mean substantial thrust loss in operation. Afterburning engines need adaptable nozzles due to the different operating conditions in dry and wet mode, so they profit the most from adjustable nozzles. Reheating the exhaust gas means to increase its volume, so the nozzle needs to become wider to be properly matched. In general, if the exit speed of the combustion gases is supersonic, an adjustable nozzle is required. Even some early jets without afterburners had an adjustable nozzle: The central cone of the Jumo-004 nozzle could be moved fore and aft, which changed the location of the bulbous aft section, helping to get the throat area right.

I like how the radiant heat of the nozzle toasted the earth under it. Looks like there may be some instability inside the flame tube but it's nonetheless impressive.
does get nice and toasty ........ the instability may that the air is moving so fast, its getting close to speed that air and fuel have very little time to mix :-)
Must be why flame holders are so commonly seen. They create a region of high turbulence, combined with carefully placed fuel injectors, that keep the flame from sputtering out at full power. Another method I've read works well for DIY turbojets is to run steel fuel lines inside the flame tube prior to the injector to give the fuel time to heat up. If done right, the fuel will get smokin' hot before it mixes with the air, allowing the fuel to atomize more quickly, while keeping the hottest portion of the flame further up inside. This is a common reason why home made afterburners work for the first few seconds and then blow out. The injector itself is very hot initially, but after a few seconds the flow of fuel cools down the injector, allowing colder and colder fuel to enter the chamber.
Hi.its is not only an area of turbulence the flame holders ( gutters ) cause. but they cause a lower pressure region which allows the fuel and air to mix and slow. We use a similar method in that we create a lower pressure region or pressure dump slowing the mixture down and holding the flame front.... i find most after burners that blow them self's out are caused from having to little region or pressure drop to handle the increased speed of the gasses from the engine as you increase power, the reason in my video the after burner seemed to go unstable towards the end of the video was the fuel was running out, leaning off the mixture which again if the fuel to air relationship is close to or beyond combustible leaves will cause bad results
We're not disagreeing, just using different terminology. A low pressure region necessarily creates turbulence. It's not really slowing down anything though, the absolute speed of the molecules in the turbulance may actually be greater than the molecules which are uninterrupted. If you are measuring only the speed going down the length of the tube, then yes you could say it's slowing. The sputtering is noticeable at other parts of the video, like around 1:02, so it would seem to me the design could be improved. Of course nobody can definitively say what's causing the issue by only watching a video. All I'm saying is, the flame isn't as stable as it could be, and a design improvement is warranted if you're interested in increasing the consistency and efficiency of the burner.

Wow what a great project...thank u for the vid. Humbly, id like to make a suggestion. The reason its getting so hot is the exhaust has to be able to open wider. Im planning on using a stain less vegetable strainer that can open and close. Also there is a ceramic coating you can coat the afterburner with. Its used in automotive turbo / manifold application to keep heat down. Best of luck.

You wouldn't need a C-D nozzle but your are definitely under expanded coming out of your converging nozzle and are throwing away some performance. Giving yourself a bigger area at the exit looks like what you need. Any idea on the ratios of areas from the turning exit to the nozzle exit?

That's insane!! Wow ! I would not have counted on those stainless steel parts to hold up at those temps. I was thinking there was going to be a melt through and explode, especially at the weld joints. Hope you guys were behind a safe barricade. Still an awesome experiment. Interesting conversation about molecular flow. How about the bearings, did they get fried? Would magnetic bearing work? I work with vacuum turbo pumps that spin very fast and use this method to reduce friction. The only problem here is keep the magnets cool, (below the curie point). Good job guys. Thanks

Nice. At a guess I would say you want your highest diameter/area/pressure area before your burn to get high pressure upwind of the thrust. Also check your reducing cone: the angle looks higher than 7 deg from axis. = turbulent flow.
Seeing steam coming off the turbine area is a good thing because you are letting excess build-up bleed away and also this is not inside a jet that's have air moving fast enough to cool the body, so bleeding hot air while standing still is a good thing

The exhaust pressure is slightly higher than the atmospheric pressure. That's why you can see the flame swelling a bit after exiting the nozzle. You'll actually get more thrust if you expand the nozzle a bit with the same amount of fuel.

Nice! Maybe have a divergent exhaust duct? The static pressure at the exit of the nozzle is equal to free stream static pressure, unless the exiting flow is expanded to supersonic conditions. A convergent-divergent nozzle will have supersonic exit flow, a simple convergent nozzle will not.

I added a Afterburner to my ER90 Pulse Jet & gained 2.5lbs thrust.It mixed with the air from the tail pipe end to gain this.Pumping Water into the back end did nothing but raise the Humidity around me.Nitros Oxide gas added 40% more thrust & was sprayed in at the front but it did use lots of it.If you cant do this at least try use Nitro Methane & Methanol in the afterburner end.It will run cooler & add a lots of thrust.You may have to open the out let up a bit.Just thoughts and ideas.A 50% mix of Propaline Oxide & Nitro Methane is the biggest booster fuel used in Control Line Pulse Jets

andy morris I can help you with those by the way, if you can get me your nominal operating pressure, temperature and mass flow rate. I'm not aware of your background and thus knowledge of gas turbines, so I'll just chuck this out there - using a C-D nozzle at the back of your engine (rather than just a converging one) gives you the capability of producing supersonic exhaust, which (for the same mass flow rate) ultimately results in more thrust. Apologies if you knew that already martyisabeliever Shock diamonds usually present when a reaction type engine (rocket, turbojet, ramjet, etc) operates in the underexpanded condition. The exhaust nozzle causes the exhaust gas to reach the speed of sound at its throat. Any extra mass flow rate just increases the pressure at the shockwave. This is known as choked flow. A C-D nozzle then diverges, giving room for the gas to expand and accelerate, causing a drop in static pressure. An optimally expanded nozzle accelerates the gas to the point where static pressure in the flow equals the environmental static pressure. Expanding it further may result in flow separation inside the nozzle. Underexpanding it leaves the static pressure in the gas higher than that in the outside environment. This causes the formation of shockwaves within the fluid, which reflect at the boundary between exhaust gas and environment, resulting in the pretty diamonds you see. You really don't want that if you're after thrust though as momentum change is a much more efficient way to gain extra thrust than a pressure differential.

I may be mistaken, but I think if you were to heat that nozzle to a high enough temperature, that it actually would stop glowing so brightly and instead fade down to a deep red and it at that point would be emitting the energy in the ultraviolet spectrum (which would be dangerous).

This is an home made gas turbine and mainly used for quarter mile sprint. The little that is lost from the outer skin of the afterburner is more than acceptable the calculations for the shape and size of the afterburner can are complex, but this one is as close as we can make it
+andy morris If it's running hotter with afterburner doesn't that mean it could be using more fuel in non-afterburner mode? My reasoning is that an afterburner is supposed to add reaction mass not fuel per se. Of course you're the one who's made a jet engine so I could be an idiot.
Uh Uh. Afterburner increases the exhaust gas temperature. Nozzle runs choked at sonic speed. Sonic speed increases with square root of gas temperature. Hotter exhaust gas means higher momentum due to higher exhaust speed. Thus, HIGHER THRUST.

That's why most airliners use the turbofan jet, which allows for a great deal of cooling...on top of the engine's design which has internal cooling (compressed air bypassing the combustion chamber). These cooling methods alone reduce the heat by over 50% If he incorporated these same method, or at least the bypass method, then it wouldn't glow like that.

You've got to have a twin-walled afterburner, so that there is a cooling layer of air flow between the inner and outer layers. That way your afterburner won't get red white hot. It might get red hot but it won't melt like yours was about to melt.

Rocket engines pump super chilled fuel thru channels in the structure to keep them cooler and from disintegrating , the heat exchange pre warms the fuel as well. You can the pattern of dark lines on launch. That’s a win/win design.
@Forrest Trump. Correct about the heat exchange but warming of the fuel was the primary design requirement. The dark portion of exhaust on an open cycle rocket engine (eg. F1 on the Saturn V 1st stage) was the exhaust from the gas generator used as boundary layer cooling. That was used to keep the exhaust bell from melting 👍

A variable area nozzle helps to adjust the exit pressure of the combustion gases to ambient pressure. When they leave the turbine, the combustion gases have still some remaining pressure which is converted into speed by a convergent contour of the nozzle.If the combustion gases have enough pressure to be accelerated to supersonic speed, the nozzle is actually first convergent and then divergent to achieve the best acceleration of the flow. The convergent, subsonic flow accelerates until in the section with the smallest area, called the throat, the speed of sound is reached, and the following divergent section accelerates the now supersonic flow further until its pressure drops to ambient pressure. This con-di-nozzle needs to adjust both the cross section of the throat and the cross section of the exit area. Failure to get especially the throat area right will mean substantial thrust loss in operation. Afterburning engines need adaptable nozzles due to the different operating conditions in dry and wet mode, so they profit the most from adjustable nozzles. Reheating the exhaust gas means to increase its volume, so the nozzle needs to become wider to be properly matched. In general, if the exit speed of the combustion gases is supersonic, an adjustable nozzle is required. Even some early jets without afterburners had an adjustable nozzle: The central cone of the Jumo-004 nozzle could be moved fore and aft, which changed the location of the bulbous aft section, helping to get the throat area right.

I like how the radiant heat of the nozzle toasted the earth under it. Looks like there may be some instability inside the flame tube but it's nonetheless impressive.
does get nice and toasty ........ the instability may that the air is moving so fast, its getting close to speed that air and fuel have very little time to mix :-)
Must be why flame holders are so commonly seen. They create a region of high turbulence, combined with carefully placed fuel injectors, that keep the flame from sputtering out at full power. Another method I've read works well for DIY turbojets is to run steel fuel lines inside the flame tube prior to the injector to give the fuel time to heat up. If done right, the fuel will get smokin' hot before it mixes with the air, allowing the fuel to atomize more quickly, while keeping the hottest portion of the flame further up inside. This is a common reason why home made afterburners work for the first few seconds and then blow out. The injector itself is very hot initially, but after a few seconds the flow of fuel cools down the injector, allowing colder and colder fuel to enter the chamber.
Hi.its is not only an area of turbulence the flame holders ( gutters ) cause. but they cause a lower pressure region which allows the fuel and air to mix and slow. We use a similar method in that we create a lower pressure region or pressure dump slowing the mixture down and holding the flame front.... i find most after burners that blow them self's out are caused from having to little region or pressure drop to handle the increased speed of the gasses from the engine as you increase power, the reason in my video the after burner seemed to go unstable towards the end of the video was the fuel was running out, leaning off the mixture which again if the fuel to air relationship is close to or beyond combustible leaves will cause bad results
We're not disagreeing, just using different terminology. A low pressure region necessarily creates turbulence. It's not really slowing down anything though, the absolute speed of the molecules in the turbulance may actually be greater than the molecules which are uninterrupted. If you are measuring only the speed going down the length of the tube, then yes you could say it's slowing. The sputtering is noticeable at other parts of the video, like around 1:02, so it would seem to me the design could be improved. Of course nobody can definitively say what's causing the issue by only watching a video. All I'm saying is, the flame isn't as stable as it could be, and a design improvement is warranted if you're interested in increasing the consistency and efficiency of the burner.

Wow what a great project...thank u for the vid. Humbly, id like to make a suggestion. The reason its getting so hot is the exhaust has to be able to open wider. Im planning on using a stain less vegetable strainer that can open and close. Also there is a ceramic coating you can coat the afterburner with. Its used in automotive turbo / manifold application to keep heat down. Best of luck.

You wouldn't need a C-D nozzle but your are definitely under expanded coming out of your converging nozzle and are throwing away some performance. Giving yourself a bigger area at the exit looks like what you need. Any idea on the ratios of areas from the turning exit to the nozzle exit?

That's insane!! Wow ! I would not have counted on those stainless steel parts to hold up at those temps. I was thinking there was going to be a melt through and explode, especially at the weld joints. Hope you guys were behind a safe barricade. Still an awesome experiment. Interesting conversation about molecular flow. How about the bearings, did they get fried? Would magnetic bearing work? I work with vacuum turbo pumps that spin very fast and use this method to reduce friction. The only problem here is keep the magnets cool, (below the curie point). Good job guys. Thanks

At a guess I would say you want your highest diameter/area/pressure area before your burn to get high pressure upwind of the thrust.
Also check your reducing cone: the angle looks higher than 7 deg from axis. = turbulent flow.
Seeing steam coming off the turbine area is a good thing because you are letting excess build-up bleed away and also this is not inside a jet that's have air moving fast enough to cool the body, so bleeding hot air while standing still is a good thing

The exhaust pressure is slightly higher than the atmospheric pressure. That's why you can see the flame swelling a bit after exiting the nozzle. You'll actually get more thrust if you expand the nozzle a bit with the same amount of fuel.

Nice! Maybe have a divergent exhaust duct? The static pressure at the exit of the nozzle is equal to free stream static pressure, unless the exiting flow is expanded to supersonic conditions. A convergent-divergent nozzle will have supersonic exit flow, a simple convergent nozzle will not.

I added a Afterburner to my ER90 Pulse Jet & gained 2.5lbs thrust.It mixed with the air from the tail pipe end to gain this.Pumping Water into the back end did nothing but raise the Humidity around me.Nitros Oxide gas added 40% more thrust & was sprayed in at the front but it did use lots of it.If you cant do this at least try use Nitro Methane & Methanol in the afterburner end.It will run cooler & add a lots of thrust.You may have to open the out let up a bit.Just thoughts and ideas.A 50% mix of Propaline Oxide & Nitro Methane is the biggest booster fuel used in Control Line Pulse Jets

andy morris I can help you with those by the way, if you can get me your nominal operating pressure, temperature and mass flow rate. I'm not aware of your background and thus knowledge of gas turbines, so I'll just chuck this out there - using a C-D nozzle at the back of your engine (rather than just a converging one) gives you the capability of producing supersonic exhaust, which (for the same mass flow rate) ultimately results in more thrust. Apologies if you knew that already
martyisabeliever Shock diamonds usually present when a reaction type engine (rocket, turbojet, ramjet, etc) operates in the underexpanded condition. The exhaust nozzle causes the exhaust gas to reach the speed of sound at its throat. Any extra mass flow rate just increases the pressure at the shockwave. This is known as choked flow. A C-D nozzle then diverges, giving room for the gas to expand and accelerate, causing a drop in static pressure. An optimally expanded nozzle accelerates the gas to the point where static pressure in the flow equals the environmental static pressure. Expanding it further may result in flow separation inside the nozzle. Underexpanding it leaves the static pressure in the gas higher than that in the outside environment. This causes the formation of shockwaves within the fluid, which reflect at the boundary between exhaust gas and environment, resulting in the pretty diamonds you see. You really don't want that if you're after thrust though as momentum change is a much more efficient way to gain extra thrust than a pressure differential.

Afterburning gas turbine engines usually have variable nozzles to avoid turning orange like that. But that said, that was cool!

I may be mistaken, but I think if you were to heat that nozzle to a high enough temperature, that it actually would stop glowing so brightly and instead fade down to a deep red and it at that point would be emitting the energy in the ultraviolet spectrum (which would be dangerous).

This is an home made gas turbine and mainly used for quarter mile sprint. The little that is lost from the outer skin of the afterburner is more than acceptable the calculations for the shape and size of the afterburner can are complex, but this one is as close as we can make it

Uh Uh. Afterburner increases the exhaust gas temperature. Nozzle runs choked at sonic speed. Sonic speed increases with square root of gas temperature. Hotter exhaust gas means higher momentum due to higher exhaust speed. Thus, HIGHER THRUST.
