- Have you ever thought about how many secrets are hidden inside of your computer? Only 20 years ago, the most advanced computers had hard drive capacity of 320 Megabytes, and it was considered as a great breakthrough in personal computers’ technology at that time.
Since then a lot of things have changed. We almost don’t use mouses anymore and prefer touch pads and touch screens. But a keyboard is the only thing that seems to be unchanged. Here’s a list of all the hot key combinations that will certainly come in handy. No matter Windows or OS X user you are.

SUMMARY:
- If you just press Win key, it will open the Start Menu. In Windows 8.1 it will open the previous window.
- Th combination of Win key and B key selects the first icon in the Notification Area. You can then switch between the icons using the arrow keys.
- Press Win key and C keys. It will show the Charm Bar in Windows 8 and 8.1 versions. In Windows 10 it opens Cortana but only if you’re using a supported language. For English, it should work just fine.
- It provides Quick access to Windows Explorer. For that press Win key and E keys together. Easy as that. In Windows 10 it also opens the Quick Launch by default.
- Press Win and K keys. It will open a new Start menu - Connections in Windows 8 and 8.1.
- Will help to restore the last minimized window. Just press these 3 keys: Win, Shift, and M - and here you are.
- Do you use any external monitor or projector? Then press Win key followed by P key, and it will switch operating modes. It works only for Windows 7 and newer.
- Do you need to work with the notes or screenshots? Press Win key and W, and it will open Windows Ink Workspace. Very handy!
- Win key followed by X will open the Windows Mobile Application Centre. This works only for mobile computers in Windows Vista and 7.
- This handy keyboard shortcut will delete one word at a time, as opposed to one letter at a time. This works all across OS X, whether you’re typing in TextEdit or even when typing a website into your browser’s URL bar.
- Do you want to hide all open windows from the currently active app quickly? Just press Command key followed by H.
- Combination of Command and F3 keys will remove all app windows from view and let you take a gander at your desktop. To bring your apps back, just press the keys again.
- Combination of Option plus Shift plus Volume Up or Volume down comes in especially handy when you’re trying to get your audio output levels just right. It increases or decreases your machine’s volume in much smaller increments.

For those with widescreen monitors try the WIN key + right arrow to move the open window to the right half of the screen. You can then open another window and type WIN key + left arrow to have two open windows perfectly split on your monitor. It also works for the up arrow and down arrow.

Hey, great list, the only two I often use are Winkey+R and winkey+L. The ones I use most often, you forgot, which was kinda triggering for me since i use them all day, every day. These are, winkey+arrows and winkey+shift+arrows. To switch screens to half of your monitor, or even quarters. Adding the shift allows you to move them over to other windows. These are the best ever

In Safari on Mac, you can just press Cmd+z to reopen the most recently closed tab (repeat to open the second most recent, etc.). This only works when the Undo function doesn't have anything else to undo, but you can just open a new tab and do it from there, if your current tab has something else to undo.
but alt + f4 is the best one.

I don't use many key combos but these are the ones I use the most.
*1) CTRL C* - Copy
*2) CTRL V* - Past
*3) CTRL X* - Cut
*4) CTRL + either the left or right arrows or even the back key in a text area* - This allows you to jump forward a word or back a whole word or delete a word with the back key
*5) Shift + any arrow key* - This allows you to highlight letters with that blue box and you can delete them
*6) CTRL F* - This brings up a search box either in a word doc or in chrome and you can look for a specific word or a whole sentence.
*7) CTRL A* - Highlights all the words in your area your typing in or just highlights everything on the page you're on
That's about it for what I use the most I think. You can also hold CTRL and shift to highlight whole words and delete them.

Best school Chromebook combination: alt+shift+refresh (flips screen upside down) another way: alt+shift+any arrow key
Someone had put this tip out previously:
To Backward tab open pages> ctrl+shift+tab. Someone else suggested a more efficient way>ctrl+tab.
I found out that the only difference, between the two functions, is that it Forward tab open pages. So it's a matter of what suits you.
These and some of the other tips, by you commentors, have been a help and I saved them for future use. Thanks all.
Do not forget about Ctrl+PageUp and Ctrl+PageDown (if you have them). I use those way more than Ctrl+Tab
Long Fork Hey, thanks for passing that tip along. That is definitely more efficient, less key stokes, with pg up/pg down keys.
Another useful one: Windows key and one of the numbers, they correspond to the shortcuts on your task bar.
For example Win key + 1 opens the first program on your task bar.
For combination number six for mac if you have a different keyboard then the one on video the option key is Ctrl

Thank you, Sir. For the past five months, my Lenovo 9i keyboard has been exhibiting unusual behavior. When I press certain keys, it triggers shortcuts unintentionally. For instance, pressing 'S' activates the Snipping Tool, 'R' adjusts the refresh rate, 'Spacebar' alters the backlight brightness level, and 'M' switches touch mode, among others. This forces me to rely on the floating keyboard or other accessory keypads, rendering the physical keyboard unusable.
This issue occurs randomly, sometimes even when I restart the PC or close its cover, without any prior indication. It's worth mentioning that there hasn't been any spillage on the keyboard. Could you please advise on how to address this problem?

There is another keyboard function, to take a cropped screenshot without 3rd party applications installed, and I think it only works with latest windows 10
Press ctrl+alt+x and it would open up a screenshot for cropping. So you wouldn’t need to install something like light shot.

Xylux Trace No worries. Hey, stuff like that happens, sometimes. We ain't gonna sweat the small stuff. It's all about learning, tweaking what we have and growing. A quick story: I was at an audio video forum site, looking for some help. As I was reading comments, the moderator responded to an O.P.(original poster), of how to send images of logs and equipment. The Mod specified use of Snipping Tool. Prn scrn(print screen) and other applications, did not work or work well with the forum's servers. So I google up Snipping Tool, found there was a download for it, but also some windows versions already had it bundled in. Windows 7, which I have been using since 2009, had it and I just found out about it a year ago, by way of the forum. It crops easily enough and the extension can be changed to whatever suits the project(jpeg, gif,etc) and you can print what you copy. It use has been quite beneficial to me from a personal and business use. I understand your concern about 3rd party apps and unknown/unseen problems that can come with their use. The coolest cobinations is wind key and tab when your cumputer is lagging
windows + v key will bring up clipboard history window where you get to view all previously copied text and images across all applications. Items in the clipboard history are deleted once we restart windows, but gud thing is we can always pin the clipboard item so that it is available permanently unless you delete it....

No its just a mistake on the video. I don't know but i have a mac and it has a d and one q key so im not sure what they did.
maybe the keyboard with a D key was an upgrade? did you try turning it off and on? is it a laptop or a desktop? is it the pro model?
Here's one that wasn't mentioned that I think might be useful.
If you hold the the windows key + one of the numbers along the top of the keyboard it will run the corresponding app in the quick launch bar at the bottom of the screen when viewing the desktop. I haven't tested if it works while in apps or on versions of Windows other than Windows 10.
