The problem is...I can't fake the fact that I really don't care about how they feel about the their work or the weather or their first job. Small talk is just so forced...which makes it uncomfortable.

Small talk is forced if that’s what you make it. I use small talk to be present and make a conscious effort to try and learn about said persons life. Small talk is 100% necessary if you wanna get to learn about somebody, embrace it

this response is so funny because the commenter says their problem with these questions is they don’t care about the answers and your response is basically “well if you just care about the answers!!!!!!” 😂 like, i don’t though. i just do not care what the answers are lol.

My advice is to work on that. The problem could be your not seeing their humanity. We are all very similar in the end and have a lot of the same challenges. Class and politics don’t change it that much. There is a cycle of life and that is something to relate to.

I read an article many years ago in Seventeen Magazine when I was in high school. It stated you can make more friends in two months by being interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you. Love this video! Excellent suggestions.

Five main areas for small talk.
    Work
    Life
    Travel
    Food
    Weather
In each area we can think in terms of time: now, the past and the present.
    Work
    1. What do you do?6
    2. What motivated you to get into (nursing)?
    3. Did you always want to be a (nurse)?
    4. What was your first ever job?
    - Do you like it?
    5. What does your typical day look like?
    6. What do you love about it?
    7. Is this your dream job or are you working towards something else?
    8. If money wasn't an issue what would you do for work? How would you spend your time?
    Life
    9. Did you hear about (current event)?
    10. Have you got much planned for the weekend?
    11. What do you like to do in your spare time? (Might be a shared interest so you can easily chat now, or something you don't know about leading to more questions)
    - That is so interesting.
    - What do you do about_____?
    12. Have you read any good books lately?
    13. Have you seen any good movies lately?
    14. Do you have any kids/pets?
    15. Are you from here?
    16. Where did you live before this?
    17. Is this place very different to there?
    18. Where did you grow up?
    Travel
    19. Are you planning on getting away for the holidays?
    20. Are you taking time off over Christmas?
    21. I've just back from ____. Have you ever been?
    22. You went to ___ last year didn't you? I am planning on going to that area and am not sure what to do /where to go while there. Do you have any recommendations?
    23. What places are on your bucket list?
    Food
    24. Im looking for somewhere to eat lunch? Do you know any good restaurants?
    25. I am cooking ____ for dinner. What about you?
    26. Have you tried the new (Thai) restaurant?
    27. Do you like (Thai) food?
    Weather
    28. It is a beautiful day today isn't it?
    29. Can you believe all the rain we have been having?
    30. It is pouring out there. Its a shame I rode my bike. How did you get to work today?
Many of these start with a context: sharing your experience first then inviting their input.
Also using the word 'so' is a helpful way to introduce a question.

Hi Emma! I have taught Japanese students for over 35 years. In Japan, small talk is not common with strangers (as in a party). I remember one of my students telling me how excited she was, going to her first international party. The following day, I asked her how the party went, and she said "Not good." When I asked her why, she said, "No one talked to me." Of course, if she had tried STARTING a conversation, thinks could have turned out much differently. I am now once again, at the behest of another Japanese student, starting to teach the art of small talk, which you have so wonderfully captured on this video. I love your bright-eyed, friendly, personable and light approach to small talk. I couldn't stop watching you engage your audience with so much positivity and energy. I have assigned this video as homework for my Japanese student, and will use it in our next lesson. Two thumbs up. 👍👍Thank you so much, Emma !

I love that part of Japanese culture. Introverts are admired and small talk is not something required in social situations. In the U.S it seems the louder , chattier people in the room are the most envied.🤔

I don't agree with Emma; It really takes being a little bit of an a hole, but still nice.

Yeas, I hope that you'll focus on discussing each category in the coming lessons.
I know lots of vocabulary, but the problem is that I don't always know how to use each word naturally, that's why I extremely push for discussing each case separately.

As a 15 year old girl, I am often put in the place of having to make small talk with a lot different teenagers. It’s pretty much always in a church setting (at my youth group) and I want to seem more,ya know understanding. Making small talk is like always the first step to making friends or developing new relationships with people I am meeting or wanting to get to know at church. I hate awkward silence but awkward small talk with a bunch of teenagers is um cringy for loss of better words. Thanks for the vid! Next time I am engaging in a conversation with a 13 year old boy (who probably doesn’t wear deodorant) I will definitely ask him what his line of work is or where he thinks i should travel to with my fiancé! (all jokes aside thanks for the vid, much love)

    Hello!
SO I spent time in an infantry unit which deployed to Baghdad in 2p08, And I must admit that I had become quite reclusive in nature for some time after then.
On top of communications progress, I can literally feel my confidence growing in enabling myself to "small talk," once again! I appreciate the topic tips! I look forward to practicing! BEST, Chris

    If you're in the USA here's a #1 tip:
Be tall or attractive. If you're not one or the other be prepared to get hurt by society's behavior

    • @heymoe1179

True. If a bald middle aged white guy says "good morning" to a pretty woman, he's a creeper. If a 6', attractive, 6 $$$ figure guy says the same...she thinks about it all day and tells her friends. It's all so superficial...as is small talk.

One thing you didn't mention is that sometimes conversation starters can sound like the lead up to asking someone out on a date. It could be awkward if you're trying to get restaurant advice and the other person thinks you're making your move.
