Ive been researching this method and dreaming up my dreads for a year now. Finally started them 3 weeks ago and all your advice has been very helpful. You and lazy dreads really make the most sense, and when you had your locks, I liked the look of them better than any caucasian on youtube with dreads. Thanks Connor. -Jeannie USA
hey buddy, yes defiantly a cheap and more natural way then going to a salon. wow lots of questions hahah okay 1.salt and lemon measures? Well I squeezed one lemon and a couple of teaspoons of salt in to a refillable spay bottle, fill with water and shake will dissolved and there you go (shake before every use) 2.time taken to dread up? well it took around 2 months. 3.time spent rubbing hair? I use to do it with the spray every morning and every night for 5 mins all over your head. good luck
Few questions. 1 how long do you have to do it every morning and night 2 how much salt and how much water 3 is it alright if you don't have curly hair???
Fraser Nicholson hey man just do 5-10 mins as long as you feel really. It depends on what size your bottle is. I would say do 1 8th salt. It will work with most hair it just may take longer to lock up depending on your hair type.
They look good! Wool is really good for this method because it's very course and rough. You can use an old wool jumper or hat to rub your hair with. Be careful with using too much salt as it can dry your scalp out and cause itchiness! And also dry your hair out and cause it to become weak.
Hi Connor like the video mate just wondering how long was your hair in the video and how long did it take to grow your hair at this length? my hair isn't as long as yours but would like it to be I had my last shave of my hair about 6-8 months ago so if u could answer these couple of questions would be very helpful thanks
+daniel fletcher hay man, my hair was around 7inches be for i stared dreading, that was 2 years for growth. you should dread it 4 inches no shorter. it will work at inches too but hair is a bit short so takes ages
I did not smell as i washed it every week and that kept it from getting smelly. yeah wool is really good i found a towel worked just as well but it all comes down to preference. good luck with your journey!
Hey man, that's a good video but I don't think I would ever put salt and lemon or any other stuff in there! Did you find it started to stink after I while? I only use hot water to clean my hair, once a week as you do. I'm using some wool rubbing every day and just generally let it do whatever. What I do find is that the wool roughs up the hair lifting up all the cuticles and so removing the need for any additives.
Can you rub your hair throughout the day with your hands as well as rubbing your hair with a towel 2-3 times a day, or would that be too much? Thanks. Peace.
Hey there, sorry for the late reply. I washed it with a dreadlock shampoo bar once a week and it turned out pretty good. I had to crochet them in the end but i spent 4 days to crochet my whole head. Have a look at some other vids of mine im nearly on my 4th month they are looking a lot better then this one.
Ben Moore not really if you start the dreading process and just leave it after a week. It will just all dread up in it's own time. You can try brushing out bits a achieve this look. Good luck sorry I can't be much more help.
Hey Connor I stumbled upon your method of how you started your dread journey and thought that this was a great inexpensive way to begin them. Good on ya for thinking more "out-of-the-box" haha. What I would really like to know is how much mixture of lemon juice and sea salt you did, as well as how long you rubbed your hair until it became all dready like and for how long each morning and night that you rubbed your hair. If you have anymore tips shoot em my way! Greatly appreciated.
I've had dreads twice and want to do them again with this method. whats the shower situation with your hair and the whole salt thing? do you do the rub before or after you wash your hair?
Hi Connor! Did my first day today and it feels like its one big mess in the back. Like its just all my hair together. Not exactly in seperate locks. Is this normal for the first day? Gr
Yeah it’s normal, try rub less on the main bit and rub around it but continue to do whole head :). Keep on going and don’t rub too hard. Keep me updated. You can send me pics of you need more advise :).
+Ganjafornia 562 hey, I rubbed the towel on my head for 5 mins twice time a day for the first couple of days. Depending how you want to do them after using the rubbing method depends on what you do next. Whether it be leaving after a month and letting them do there own thing or you can crochet hook them after the first month.
+Ganjafornia 562 I have started my next journey all ready. I am two months in now. I will be making a video soon. Just rubbing method no crochet. I just leave now to do its own thing. I have not been properly rubbing for a month now haha
Do you wash your hair the same day after applying the salt spray or you leave it in there? And if not how long did you leave the salt in before washing?
I'm interested in getting dreads. I have straight hair, and I was thinking of doing the twist and rip technique and tie rubber bands at the end. Is it possible to take the rubber bands out in mornings and nights, to spray the salt water and rub it around? Or, if I take the rubber bands off the end of my start of dreads, and start rubbing them around with a towel, will they lose shape/form or will they be alright?
Ferno YT th u should be all right if you blunt your tips then you may loose some of them but should be good. If you twist and rip your whole head then the salt spray and rubbing will only help and speed up the locking process.
Connor Trent thanks so much for the reply, im currently twist/ripping my hair and tieing them up with elastic bands. As soon as I tie them up they are tending to lose form but I don't expect them to lock right away lol. Once I'm done my entire head, I was going to spray the strands with Salt Water to help them stick. Then by tonight when I take it all out to rub with a towel hopefully they'll have somewhat a better form than at the start of today. I really want short dreads on the top of my head like XXXTentacion, and maybe the length of Lil Uzi's and such. Will the methods I'm doing rn help me reach that point? Also, do I have to take everything out to do the towel rubbing cus not going to lie, I've done about 4 strands/locks or whatever and I've had to take several breaks cause my arms ache from having to twist all my hair up and tie it and such. Thanks!!!
yeah sounds like a plan. if you are twisting and ripping then you are sectioning the hair already and you have taken out the need to use the rubbing method apart from sucking in loose hair latter on down the road. The beauty of rubbing technique is that it sections itself and you dont have to do it and spend so long with your hand above your head just rub three times a day with salt spray once a day. You could do a mix but rubbing method is a slow process but twist and rip is a reasonably fast process and you have control over section size. I have never heard of these two guys, I had a look at one of them and they look like they been started with either twists and then left to freeform but his hair type is perfect for dreading so could be wrong and all be freeforming. I would say stick to twist and rip and you will need to blunt the ends and palm roll them to achieve that result. you can use the rubbing method to help new growth and that will help create congos and a little messy to create that freeform look also.
My first dreads were caused by towel rubbing my dry hair when I was 15, I loved the feeling of having hair like ropes , I'm 47 now , on my 5th set of locs now , I keep cutting them when they get too long ,it's nice to start a fresh set, you do have hair like stig of the dump for a few years but they sort themselves out in the end , one of my work buddies asked where I get my white boy dreads "done" made me laugh, I ain't never been to no "loctician" I said to him , you know all those cables behind your TV , you know there all tangled up and impossible to untangle, well that's the same thing with hair ,stop combing it and it will eventually become ropes .
hey connor do you think you can do that method with even shorter hair then yours is in this video my bangs are at my eyes right now maybe hair is 3 inches long on my head
+David Rivard it will be possible, i'm not sure how they would form but you can always fiddle with your hair to make it how you want it. Let me know how it goes.
+David Rivard There was a woman which got nice dreads with 4 inches. They looked like Connor´s, but shorter (well, duh) It was on the old DreadlockTruth forum, and she was inspired by Connor. The short answer is, yes.
Do you need to separate your hair after they start to form? also how long does your hair need to be for this method. I have curly hair and it is about 3 inches or so.
Wool is better because it creates more friction and creates more knots. I did not have anything wool really so i used a towel and it worked just as well I think.
Salt spray give a couple of sprays on your head and your done there. Rubbing with a towel morning and evening. The salt spray should Speed it up for you.
2 bad u cut them :/ just wanted to let u know i started mine 1 month and half ago using your technique ,its coming great but just wanted to know how u really managed with the loose hair and for me i have really really thin ones that are loked just wanted 2 are they still gonna match with the other ones or just losse hair can lock on other hair lol hope it makes sense , peace
Yeah I am sad about it still :(.thats really good nice one. I crocheted all the really thin ones together after 1 and a half months. the loose hair will die down but it just comes with time.happy dreading
yeah i dose man, it took me a month to get it like it is now! it takes time but its worth it. Check out what they look like now in my other videos it defiantly worked. The reason why its standing on end is because its starting to knot up! Keep it up dude it takes time. good luck!
No you just keep it salty that's what helps it lock up as you go. You still need to wash it at once every two weeks of whenever you feel it's really needs a good wash.
@@Knottytrent I have one more question but will washing it mess up my dread process because im wetting and also do I have to wash it with a certain shampoo or I don't use shampoo?
x-chetito XIII you should use a residue free shampoo or just use a bicarbonate soda and apple cider vinager Rincon. Don’t wet it in between wash’s just do your wash once a week to once every 2 weeks.
Awesome video just started to use you're method and it works I've only really got long hair at the front but my hairs about 6inches on one side then about 5inches on the other side but I've just started today but I can see a change in my hair
+Junior De Leon its all from rubbing a towel on my head with the salt spray. its naturally sections in to random size dreads. more thin than thick dreads :).
good technique ..yea no reason to go to a salon and waste money when dreads will form on their own over time with just not brushing , rubbing, back combing, even crochet
koosh yes you can, but just make sure that you clean it out first, cut your hair off and put it in clumps about an inch per bunch, squeeze it through the round hole slowly, add a pinch of sea salt as you push it out, leave the hair to dry completely before attaching them back to your head with evostick, allowing this to dry completely, before going to the dance hall to shake your new natty dreads ✌
Hey man I'm back haha. So I got really discouraged after the first day because my hair wasn't even sticking near each other. Like id twist it, tie it with a rubber band, and essentially it would all untwist and my hair would just spread out and such. So I didn't know how it was supposed to lock up when it's not even being compressed against other hair. However I've now been watching more people with dreads and I really like how people have all different size's, lengths, and such. I'm pretty sure it's called "freeforming" ? However people say twist and ripping makes it a little faster, but then they'll all be the way I create them. I won't have any cool surprises, or any originality of my hair doing its own thing and such. So this time around I think I'm just going to spray my hair with salt water and do the towel rubbing method. BUT, do I just use any ordinary towel laying around the house or is there an actual specific texture/type of towel needed? I've seen your later stages of dread videos and those are exactly how I want mine. So any advice would literally be super appreciated. I'm a pretty slow learner so if you can describe the steps as best as you can that would be amazing man :)
Ferno YT hey man, I'm glad to see you have been doing your research:). You need to use a towel that is not super fluffy and bit will not fall out. I use an old towel that is thin and not fluffy really. Yeah freeforming is my preferred look but you must not do anything to your hair apart from washing it when you need. It's a slow process but that why they look so good in the end. Rubbing method creates a similar look and creates different results on different hair. So it's well great haha. You need to run for a month maybe three depending how quickly your hair type locks. Have some patience bro. You got this man it's a fun journey when you get in to it. Can be tough at the start but worth every second:).
Connor Trent hey Connor, I was going to try to crochet hook my dreads together. Would you recommend it? And if so, what crochet hook do I need as I really don't know much about it. All I know is I'm going to go to some stores and ask if they sell them, I'm not sure what type I need or anything like that so any advice would be great, thanks!
Connor Trent Hey Connor, so I'm not going to crochet hook. I don't really fancy it after I done some research. However, I really like Freeform locks. I like how when people show their locks they have a few big ones, a few small ones, congo's, all shapes and sizes, etc. So, I was thinking, since my hair is sectioned and back combed and tied with elastics, if I let my hair sit for a few more days, then take the elastics out, my hair should be somewhat knotted and stay together. But when I roll around in bed and put a hoodie on or such, a few strands of hair might come out or something. What I'm thinking is, if those few strands of hair fall out, that means they'll just latch onto other dreads or make their own dread or something like that right? So Ive helped my hair by backcombing it, but since I want to Freeform and be surprised by my dread locks, shall I take the bands out soon and let my hair shift around and do its own thing? What I'm asking is, will that actually work and will my hair start free forming itself? Or, if I take the rubber bands out and start wearing hoodies and laying in bed without the bands, will my hair just slowly unlock and completely just come undone? Not sure if that makes sense. Basically I want cool Freeform locks, but to get myself started I HAD to section and Backcomb. However, once I let it knot for a few days-week, if I take the rubber bands out and just let my hair all be free/still knotted for the most part, will it start shuffling and free forming? Thanks mate!!!
TR Stewie freeforming would be to let your hair section itself and not have any input to the hair apart from washing. As you have sectioned and backcombed already then yes you can leave you hair now. It should lock itself but as you are so early it to your journey you will get lots of loose hair but should work in the long run with self locking and semi freeforming from here on out. It's a real journey freeforming or semi freeforming. Get a 0.75mm or 1mm crochet hook. Hope this helps
Connor Trent Honestly mate can I call you on skype or something at some point just for like 5 minutes? I have a lot of questions but keep forgetting to ask and it seems like it's taking forever to get a quick view on how I want to approach dreads, so if we could just talk where I can fire away all the questions and get immediate answers and such that would be great
yes of course, you should wash once a week more if you feel you have too. it will take longer to lock up the more you wash it. You don't need to walk around with dirty hair. :)
yes of course just wash your hair with dread shampoo and apply to scalp and then when you rince the soap will run through the rest of the hair and clean your locs. Just make sure you dry them well. hope this help.
Connor Trent Pft, not always. But when I do know, I try to correct people. Since, well. It`s a nice thing to do. Looking forward to the new video, and good thing that you won´t crocheting them this time. Cause I want to do wool rubbing too, so I need a idea of how they could look : P
anyone wanna help do ive been doing this for like 5 days i have straight thick hair and i dont see that nuch progress. I feel like everytime i shower (no shampoo) i go back to zero. i have been doing the towel method 3 or 4 times a day, and im not sure if i should just twist and rip. should i continue?
Hey bro, if you have been doing it 5 days then progress is going to be very small. You should be using a salt spray and. It really washing till the end of the first week or even two if you can wait. You don't get your hair wet when you shower only on the wash. You need to be using a residue free shampoo too. This will promote locking up too. You need to have some patience with this method really. It takes different lengths of time for different types of hair. I would say try for three week and if you still have no dreads or even very very little then the method may not be good for your hair. Then I would say go on to twist and rip with some crochet hooking to neaten up. Hope this helps bro, good luck
Ive been researching this method and dreaming up my dreads for a year now. Finally started them 3 weeks ago and all your advice has been very helpful. hey buddy, yes defiantly a cheap and more natural way then going to a salon. wow lots of questions hahah okay
1.salt and lemon measures? Well I squeezed one lemon and a couple of teaspoons of salt in to a refillable spay bottle, fill with water and shake will dissolved and there you go (shake before every use)
2.time taken to dread up? well it took around 2 months.
3.time spent rubbing hair? I use to do it with the spray every morning and every night for 5 mins all over your head.
good luck
This is such a cool and unknown technique. I've never even heard of it until watching this video. Nice :)
Sea salt mate
Back comb. Rip and pull tek
would this work with shoulder length hair?
Can i wash my hairs if i do the rubbing techniquw?
MrCheesefoot no it takes away from the progress

yeah a couple of tea spoons maybe some essential oils of your choice couple of drops.
I did not smell as i washed it every week and that kept it from getting smelly. yeah wool is really good i found a towel worked just as well but it all comes down to preference.

My hair is mostly matted with a couple locs in the back, but they are all locked everywhere but the root, how do I get the roots to lock? Thanks
Are there any consequences , like damage or like make it fall out ??
do you cut your both side's of your hair to make the dreadlocks
Do I still wet my hair every day in the shower, or should I wait for the dreads to form then start wetting again?
I trying to fine ways to start dreads when's the best time to start
When u start should u wait until it locks up to get ur hair wet or wash it?
No you can wash it after a week or two if you can make two then good if not no biggie
Can you rub your hair throughout the day with your hands as well as rubbing your hair with a towel 2-3 times a day, or would that be too much?
Thanks. Peace.
can you wash your hair if you do this technique
how it worked for me look at them now. please tell me how as i am interested where i went wrong?

If you are happy with that look^, is there a way of maintaining it and preventing your hair fully dreading itself
Ben Moore not really if you start the dreading process and just leave it after a week. It will just all dread up in it's own time. You can try brushing out bits a achieve this look. Good luck sorry I can't be much more help.
hey connor i havent had any dreads form yet and im wondering if its because i shower daily. no shampoo just water.
How long was your hair before you started dreading it?
How long do u rub it and put water in form

i leave it on for a day or two
Is it normal that all hair goes together in the roots?

i use to wear a sort of snood/ large head sock at night. i stopped wearing it as i did not like it after trying for a couple of months.
+Connor Trent thank you and how did your hair start forming from that day and the first day
+Junior De Leon its all from rubbing a towel on my head with the salt spray. its naturally sections in to random size dreads. more thin than thick dreads :).
I wash my hair once a week unless I have something important like job interview or something along those lines.
good technique ..yea no reason to go to a salon and waste money when dreads will form on their own over time with just not brushing , rubbing, back combing, even crochet
Samantha David yeah that's it why spend!! Haha
Dude thats fuckin sick! they already look really cool. How many dreads are you trying to get?
can i just put my hair in a play-doh squeezer
koosh yes you can, but just make sure that you clean it out first, cut your hair off and put it in clumps about an inch per bunch, squeeze it through the round hole slowly, add a pinch of sea salt as you push it out, leave the hair to dry completely before attaching them back to your head with evostick, allowing this to dry completely, before going to the dance hall to shake your new natty dreads ✌
Jah Pedro what 💀
can i wash my hair in the shower after this method or does it mess it up
trill supreme just wash your hair like normal if you use dread shampoo it will lock quicker.
U have to wait two months
I have no idea how many i have now i tried counting and lost count at 30 some thing i reckon i have around 60 ish.
I have a lot of questions but keep forgetting to ask and it seems like it's taking forever to get a quick view on how I want to approach dreads, so if we could just talk where I can fire away all the questions and get immediate answers and such that would be great
Does it have to be SEA salt ?
no really its just to recreate that salty effect from when you come out the sea.
Can you wash you hair after
yes of course, you should wash once a week more if you feel you have too. it will take longer to lock up the more you wash it. You don't need to walk around with dirty hair. :)
just salt and water? that's it?
yeah you got it :)
is it salt spray?
yeah it is. :)
Connor Trent I'm barely gonna start dreading my hair but I feel it's too short. Is there a length you recommend?
how long was your hair?
around 6-7 inches long i think :)
normal for lot of hair to fall out when doing this?
How does it look now mate?
yo bro squad fucking awesome haha. Well I like it, check out a more resent video.
what is your salt spray made out of??? table salt and water diluted?
you got it bud!
in the rubbing method is not necessary to bathe
Can you wash your hair in the shower?
yes of course just wash your hair with dread shampoo and apply to scalp and then when you rince the soap will run through the rest of the hair and clean your locs. Just make sure you dry them well. hope this help.
Are your dreads sectioned?????
no theyre not! :)
+EmoSMOSHBride They are sectioned, but not forced sectioning by backcombing or T&R. They´re natural sectioned.
+Remy Ernstsen you have the answers haha :)
Connor Trent Pft, not always. But when I do know, I try to correct people. Since, well. It`s a nice thing to do.
Looking forward to the new video, and good thing that you won´t crocheting them this time. Cause I want to do wool rubbing too, so I need a idea of how they could look : P
+Remy Ernstsen nice well i should be filming anouth vid soon. had a funny week so not had the chance
anyone wanna help do ive been doing this for like 5 days i have straight thick hair and i dont see that nuch progress.
Hope this helps bro, good luck
sounds good i just need a little more length be start
man i envy people with hair volume like yours, mine is super thin and it just grows and goes straight down :( :D
Like the sideburns man
Hey man how long was your hair when you first started?
jesse taylor this was my first set and my hair was around 6-7 inches long. I lost a lot a length but you will with any technique of making dreads :).
@RawBohemian thank you for the salt overdose advise i will cut it down abit.
I've been doing this for 2 days so far and I just have have an afro now lol
yeah thats how it starts keep on rubbing bro. the afro will last for a month maybe more depending on your hair type
Same bro. Same.
I have an almost afro now. Started 3 days ago
I think mine are gonna turn out like urs
Your ass had some cute ass hair. Lol why u gotta ruin it like that? 😂😂
Don't get dreads done in a salon, let your hair dread on its own. It's worth it.
i agree you can do it yourself or even just get a mate if your struggling. I have seen lots of salon mistakes !
That's really helpful, thank you so much for posting that :)
Gareth Bilton u look white af don’t get dreads u goofy lookin fuck
