    The point asmon makes about having the legion legendaries in his bag was a great one. Its the idea of making one thing good in certain situations and others better in their situations. It makes players not only make choice in the moment to fulfill a certain role but also the flexibility to on the fly swap to another unique and useful toolset.

    What he's describing at 21:45 with the Legion Legendaries is exactly what Destiny does with Exotics. Basically a bag of tricks you haul around for specific situations. A lot of games have some sort of borrowed power system. The problem with WoW is each new system is obsolete after an expack or a few big patches.

    The worst thing about Azerite is by far the fact that you could loot a higher ilvl piece and not being able to use it because a fully unlocked lower ilvl one were better.

    The biggest problem I had with most of these systems is the fact that the new systems weren't account wide. Like the moment you hit 110 in Legion your artifact should've had it the same as your main if leveling an alt. Another thing that made me mad was that they instantly threw out Artifacts after Legion like it was Mega Evolution in Pokemon X & Y

    I think the enjoyment of the artifact/Suramar storylines and questing made my early legion experience good enough that the legendary frustration was minimal. Whilst I didn't immmediately have my BiS on every spec, i quickly had a "good enough" one just through playing the game by the time ToV came out and player power was needed.
    The community did itself a fuckload of harm in deciding they needed BiS legos for EN which was completely not tuned for that and my guild cleared Mythic with most not having their BiS because it just wasn't needed.
    And by the time ToS came out the chance of having your best lego was high so it genuinely never bothered me.
    People always claim the start of Legion was awful but... I always thought it was fun, and the overall experience was one of the best WoW has ever had.

    I liked artifact weapons at the start mostly. My biggest dislike is once I got all the traits the grind should be done. Then I can focus on an alt weapon or diffrent spec. However their was no end so if you wanted to be viable you had to put a shit ton of time into alts if you wanted to take them on raids or mythic runs. Their were points if your artifact didn't have +20 or +40 you couldn't raid. So my alts never got played. Just played my main and grinned ap every day of the week Just to stay competitive.
    If the ap grind ended once the weapon capped and I could go grind an alt it wouldn't been so bad.

    54:40 Dude, this part spoke to me so much! I've been saying for years that Blizzard needs to do something crazy with the classes, starting with creating a RANGED TANK! Even if they have to create a sort of shield or projection of the tank within melee distance of the mob to avoid redesigning whole boss mechanics and stuff. Like, the boss would be attacking a projection or shield at melee, and the actual player is ranged. And I love all the things you mentioned that have to do with making tanking and healing more accessible and more attractive. The Mythic+ waiting times need to be reduced so bad, man. I know you don't have this issue if you have a super active or hardcore guild but the fact of the matter is that most WoW players use the Dungeon Finder for their M+ runs. Blizzard needs to make tanking and healing more accessible, more fun, and more popular, and giving tanking and healing specs to crazy DPS classes would really hit the spot. Tanks also need a major boost to their aggro at the pull moment and for 3 to 5 seconds after the pull. After that, Blizzard can make the tank do their work with their DPS to keep aggro but making aggro weak at the pull moment makes tanking so freakin' stressful in many PuGs.

    Its funny how many things Asmon likes and wants in mmos, Wildstar had. If Wildstar launched today in the state it was at when it shut down, with a month of solid advertising, the game would take off. The raids were amazing, the housing was amazing, the art style was unique, great playable races. Tier gear that changed the fundamental playstyles of the class. Frictionless spec swapping. Frictionless Mog. Great mounts. No major secondary systems that I remember. A ranged tank class, a melee heal class.

      Are you referring to the Blood of the Enemy (and their healer/tank equivalents) or Conflict and Strife? If you're referring to Blood of the Enemy, for rank 3, I don't think 30k honor in battlegrounds is too terrible of a grind. 2 hours, so unless you're short on time it really isn't that bad. CONFLICT AND STRIFE HOWEVER, that one would suck for anyone that doesn't enjoy PvP and its their BIS essence, because that required multiple weeks of rated PvP if you weren't a high-end PvPer. Though I think for the most part most specs had Conflict and Strife as a minor power, not a major power BIS, and really having rank 2 vs rank 3 for that isn't that big of a game changer.
      Ripple in Space is the only other PvP essence, a terrible blink isn't worth the trouble so I don't really count that one, especially when other minor powers were better to choose from than Ripple in Space's handful of primary stat that you got the same amount of regardless of the rank you had.

  • @ub3rfr3nzy94

    Blizzard need to design bosses in dungeons and raids where max dps isn't always optimal or required. By making everything cutting edge difficulty in mythic, you force people to pick the 1% dps increase and follow cookie cutter builds. Stop punishing players in fights for taking longer to kill the boss, reward them for doing mechanics right. Add mechanics that give better dps if you follow them. There is all kinds of stuff you could do, but right now there is nothing that seperates classes and specs, it's all down to the numbers. Add back resistances and damage types, that gives us a reason to make builds for specific encounters. Want to have difficult raids, make achievements that up the difficulty by forcing you to do things unorthodox, or take less viable methods. Make it viable to pick mobility, cc, other damage types over flat damage. Raidfights should be more about mechanics than damage anyway. I'm not saying make everything mythic KJ, one fuck up wipes the raid. Give personal responsibility, reward players who do mechanics and stay alive or do mechanics that progress the fight. Mechanics that allow you do do the fight faster the better you do them. That kind of stuff.

      @mattyoung9146 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fucking TRUE

    • @ThePinkSora
      @ThePinkSora 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with that is it would take shaking up the base combat system of WoW to do that. The reason it's all down to numbers and so on is because everyone is so familiar with the fundamentals of the combat system. You cannot design a boss that is pure utility/mechanics if you also want to have the combat system matter.
      Basically, if you make a boss that has tough mechanics on a timer, high DPS makes the fight easier. If you have phases on boss hp then high DPS makes it easier, if you have add spawns, high DPS makes it easier, if you have specific mechanics that increase DPS (Alysrazor comes to mind) then high DPS still makes it easier.
      I do agree that the game should be easier, but not just easier, rather more accessible. I feel the game is balanced too much around the degenerate shit done at the top end, so now even average guilds are semi-forced to participate. If instead mythic was tuned so that 25% of guilds, instead of 2% of guilds had the chance to clear it then perhaps 10% of guilds actually *WOULD* clear it, and that seems like a more healthy place.
      To do that we do not need to uproot the combat system to make fights less impacted by DPS, but it may be interesting.

    • @Xynth25
      @Xynth25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I mean that's literally what raid fights are now. Outside of the first two or three weeks damage isn't the issue holding you back from CE. Mythic raiding is literally Play Better, and there's so many encounters where you make a niche talent choice or a class goes one build if they're doing one role in the fight and a different build if they're not.

      I can understand that it was probably a headache to come up with glyphs that did stuff that was useful and not being overpowered and balancing so much, but it added a lot. Glyphs, being able to reforge gear, gemming/paying attention to the color of gem used and making choices for that (along with having gear with guaranteed sockets), and enchants (both through rep and through the prof) all gave one control and immersion to one's character.

    I remember quitting around Nighthold. Guess who got screwed over by the legendary Lottery? It's great when you have another player of the same specc out dpsing you about 6 out of 10 times, and the best part its solely due to having good legendaries when you have bad ones, otherwise you would destroy their dps.

    • @Amoreyna
      @Amoreyna 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to mention that people who enjoy doing high level stuff feeling compelled to farm as much as possible to try to get them because some of the legendaries were so powerful. People forget all the complaints at the start of Legion about how bad it was. It wasn't tied to anything - everything could get you one so players did everything. It feels really bad when you are raiding and can't get what you need while some random dude that plays an hour a week gets a BiS legendary while doing a WQ that ends up being WF (and I knew someone who was the latter). I even knew some raiders who were unlucky enough to have never gotten a legendary before clearing Nighthold.
      Like in what world is this okay? Especially in a game where the community judges you by your gear? When you have that little control over your gear to the point that you are compelled to play far more than you would have doing things you don't like so that you can maybe finally do what your class should be doing - it feels bad.
      You know what would have felt better? Working for gear augments through a variety of activities that were not random drops that enhanced what you were doing and got rid of the gambling aspect.

    New specs would be one of the greatest updates in WoW, A hunter who is a horseback archer, a Warrior samurai spec who focus on skill and poise for huge burst, a rogue who is more of a cruel murderer who uses traps, lures and dirty tricks to keep you in their control and separate you from the herd, a melee warlock who used their knowledge in demonology to become what they worship and control, a ranged death knight who uses death magic to destroy their opponents. The opportunities are high and varied, and it’s such a cool idea too.

    One thing that always stuck with me when it comes to unlockable powers is the fairy ring teleportation network in runescape.
    At first you need a useless staff to use them, and you have to always have that on you if you need to travel through the network.
    Later on a quest rewards you with a staff that is not "quite" as useless that has the same ability... but later on, which is the part that stuck with me.
    You get rewarded with an enchanted molar by the toothfairy, which allows you to use the rings without external aid.
    Did it made me more powerful? not really but it did make things more convenient and it was something that was now an ability of my character instead of an external aid.

    Agree on better travel options. I think mounts can be great in one scenario though: zones that are designed around flying. And I don't mean "can access secret areas" I want full on Storm Peaks. These are probably hard to design, but I would be happy with 1 zone each expansion designed around flight. Write it off as "most of this continent is too windy" or whatever

    Every single expansion there's something they refuse to change until the last patch, and then the system finally works how we want it to when its too late. Legion legendaries ignored entire expansion until last patch you can get them with currency and its not complete RNG. BFA refuse to fix the RNG with getting twilight devastation and shit on gear until theres a couple weeks left and then make a vendor that solves all the issues, etc. There's like 50 examples. It's so annoying we continuously give them solutions during beta testing, it gets completely ignored and we're told we're wrong, everyone quits, and then they implement the solution that everyone came up with 14 months earlier.

    Can you imagine if borrowed power was not actually borrowed but worked like professions do? as in youd get to strengthen this borrowed power for each expansion and whenever you did any raid from that specific expansion (idk make it so there is a weekly rotation of old content raid to farm free tokens or some shit), youd have this extra oomph for this specific week of farming just because you farmed whatever borrowed power was active at that that specific time frame or something idk i aint a game dev

    Another major con to the Azerite powers was that you frequently had to do unrelated content to level up a bis piece. I remember having to do ass loads of pvp for one of my bis raid powers. I hate WoW pvp. A lot of pvpers had to farm pve. It was a bad system.

    I really liked Draenor Perks outside of the fact that they only lasted for that expansion. I would have loved if they basically used it as an overhaul mechanism to make certain skills more fun and powerful as you got higher level and just let you keep them. Artifact Weapons in my opinion were also very fun outside of the terrible grind for artifact power. The way it made me feel was that I was investing my time and effort into an item that was iconic to my class and would stick with my character and become a part of their legend. The fact that they destroyed them all in the next expansion was what ultimately made me quit the game.

    I feel like what made "borrowed power' a meme and a bad term is not when they gave us temporary upgrades, but when they started taking shit we already had in our kits even through leveling, to put it in some shit new system later where you had to unlock it. Like Avenger's Shield cooldown resetting is now on some Shadowlands lego shit but it was a regular ass passive (or talent or something) in... I wanna say Lich King? Memory fuzzy.

    I think the only issue with the way the game design evolved is a gradual movement away from pure creative passion oriented decisions towards more mental problem management oriented decisions. It started with a room full of geeks that just wanted to make something cool they wanted to play... and as a result of the success many more outside voices started to get involved.

    My biggest problem with borrowed powers that they are borrowed. Good "borrowed" power which isn't forcibly taken away to give you another of the same, but which just stays and then naturally gets irrelevant because obtain more powerful one. Basically how tier sets or just any armor function. Imagine if every expansion with their systems existed at the same time. So you level up, you become stronger, get new abilities and... at lvl 50 you suddenly become weaker just because you power turned into a pumkin. How is that makes any sense? It works in Metroid because it's different games. But there we play one game with linear level progression, but with lvling up we become weaker. Bullshit.

    The reason people like the artifact system from legion now, is because we saw other systems to come and realized any problems with the artifact system were minor in comparison. It felt better, you felt the power gain and it didn't seem worthless each patch. Regardless of how much a grind it was, in the end I'd rather re-grind my artifact wep than do azorite or do anything in shadowlands.

  • @bmccloughan9536

    I would add "borrowed power" has not only become a main grind,and very lengthy, but bliz has been using it to shore up flaws in class design or using it as a LARGE portion of player power. Old tier was a nice power bump and sometimes,(specific classes at specific times) it was a large portion of your output but it has become most of our power and no one likes that especially when a lot of it is RNG based power (procs). I feel borrowed power should be icing on the cake like the old days instead of the whole dang cake. But yeah sometimes it is fun but like this said acquisition time is a huge factor in hate. I'm in the group who hates that my classes feel absolutely awful in every way without the borrowed power.

    we shoulda just kept the artifacts, especially since we just copy/pasted the damn way to get rid of all that power. "drained all your power start over next time" then the next xpac we use azerite or anima to recharge the damn thing, and they have other weapons drop for xmog purposes or even for a "well i haven't leveled up my weapon this will be better for now" type of gameplay. even lets them tweak the system each time a bit because new power source unlocks new powers.
