      Not up to that level, but underestimating my income from my side hobby-turned business has happened to me. So ya, it is possible for this to happen. When my relatives knew the actual money I am making from that side hussle, suddenly all are like "you practically spend ur childhood in our house when we used to babysit u". I lost count of how many "childhood" i had and how many baby sitters my mom kept for me 😂😂😂😂😂

    Okay, so there's this common theme that I've been seeing popping up in these text stories recently. Our protagonist is thought of as a lazy shut-in by a family member (blood relative or an in-law), the family member does something that's rather stupid and selfish, then learns that the protagonist isn't a lazy shut-in but a working person with a good income. To be honest, it's lacking on originality.

    I will never understand the need to spend a lot of money in a high rise condo when a nice apartment can work just fine

    • @zuzax1656
      @zuzax1656 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference is with a condo, you own it, but an apartment, someone else owns and you rent. Since she sold the house she lived in, any profit would be taxable income. But buying a property right after, there is no taxable income. You are just transferring the equity that has built up to a new property.
      It is like a 401k, if you don't transfer the money to an IRA after leaving a job, it is treated as taxable income.

    • @silverhammer7779
      @silverhammer7779 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zuzax1656 Condos come with condo associations (HOA's, with all that implies) which have the authority to not only make rules assess individual owners for improvements to the common structures and areas of the building. And you have to pay them, or the association can attach a lien to your property. Frankly, condominiums are simply a gimmicked-up way for developers to dump cheap apartments without all the continuing management hassles there would be if the building was rental apartments.

    • @zuzax1656
      @zuzax1656 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@silverhammer7779 What, you don't think a landlord can raise the rent if the roof needs replacing? Or have rules regarding things like whether or not you can have a pet? When you can do laundry? Whether you can smoke in your own place?
      At least with an HOA, you can try to get on the board. What do you do with a landlord? And who says rentals can't be in an HOA governed building? The costs will just get passed on to you.
      Even if there was no HOA, and you had an apartment, you still have to maintain it's appearance (i.e., no holes in the walls, no stains on the carpet, etc.), or lose your security deposit.
      The point I was making was that there are good financial reasons to getting a condo rather than renting an apartment. This does assume that the person wishes to remain in an urban area, where individual (unattached) homes are rare. With a condo, because you own it (mortgage and all), you still build equity and get to keep what equity you gained from the previous home's sale.
      For example, you bought a house 10 years ago for 100K. You have, over these 10 years, brought the principle owed down to 70K. You sell it for 170K. You have 100K in equity. If you buy a new place for 180K (the new place needs to be equal or greater price, or you pay taxes on unused equity), and transfer the equity to the new place, there is no taxes on the gains. You now only owe 80K on a property worth 180K. Making payments just adds to the equity.
      However, if you don't buy the new place, but rent instead, that 100K is long term capital gains, and you have to pay 15% tax. That's 15K you just threw away. Now, sure you have 85K, but you are going to be giving it to someone else now. And in 10, 15, 20 years, what do you have to show for it? So, which is the better deal?

    • @silverhammer7779
      @silverhammer7779 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zuzax1656 You forgot to add in transaction costs, which are substantial. Point is, if you rent, you can leave without penalty if you have negotiated the lease correctly. Not so with a condo. My point is, if you want to live in a communal-housing situation (i.e., apartment block), rent. If you want to own, own something detached (house/land) and free of any HOA setups.

    • @zuzax1656
      @zuzax1656 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@silverhammer7779 Of course there are differences between renting and owning. And there are advantages and disadvantages to both. There are situations where it makes sense to rent. Military, where you move every few years. Just starting out in the job market, because you may have to move for your career. Being unable to maintain a house due to physical limitations, etc.
      Disadvantages with renting include rises in rent (a common term of leases of over a year), or your lease/ rental agreement not being renewed at the whim of the landlord. Where I live now, the rent went up 30% because of the rise in heating oil costs. Heat is included in the rent (a really great perk in Maine).
      And I agree with you on the moving to the 'burbs, especially if you work remotely. I am hoping to buy some land to build on within the next few years and homestead.
      But, there are practical reasons to own a condo, and they are the same as owning any real estate. It is how you accumulate and pass on wealth, for one. In cities, condo buildings don't usually have much in the way of lawn maintenance. They also often have security, especially higher income units. Shopping and other services are within a short walking distance. Heck, her main office might even be in the same building! Just take the elevator to work. This is basically what the so called "15 minute cities" are all about.
      Now, I have owned rental property, and my own home (several actually), as well as having to rent as I am now, so, I understand your POV. But, when it comes down to it, it is just a matter of choice and personal preferences.

      That’s what I was thinking. Unless when she took over paying the mortgage, her parents signed the deed over to her. Possibly she had to refinance the house to help with parents debts until she could get established with her job. I’m probably reading too much into it

    • @zuzax1656
      @zuzax1656 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a couple of ways that property can automatically transfer, but they usually are after the original homeowner's death. However, there are other ways this could happen. As Sheila pointed out, Kayleigh could have been a cosigner of a second mortgage. After getting the parents to sign a quit claim deed, she would retain ownership, but that also means the primary lender would have to go along with it, which would take much longer than a month, I would think.
      She could have put a lien on the house, foreclosed, and taken over the property. Again, longer than a month.
      Or, the parents could have just signed over the deed to her as part of a living will, or as a gift. Seeing as the parents would have been on the hook if Kayleigh stopped making the payments (which, if paid out of her own bank account would give her a stake in the house), even though they no longer lived there, the latter would have been the best bet. Closing in that case could be done fairly quickly.
      Any way you look at it, Kayleigh had her parents over a barrel.

      Old social stigma. Used to be a belief/somewhat fact (still is some places) that people who were still living with their parents in their mid-twenties upwards were lazy, jobless, shameful mooches. The concept of course coming from the pre-internet era where it was at it's truest and holding on through the early internet era where remote work was rare and mostly only a thing for those who physically couldn't go out to work and the rich/wealthy. There was no real need to question it back then.
      Nowadays though the concept is largely dead, but you still have some holdouts who believe that.
