The parents enabled Aubrey to feel entitled to things that weren't hers. Once reality began sinking in after the older sister left, Aubrey wasn't willing to live in it. In my experience, having a job isn't the worst thing. You may not like your position, your hours(or lack of them), some of the people you work around, or even the location, but working gives you something that makes the day go by. It gives you something to do. It may be repetitive most of the time, but repetition gets your mind off of the time. The first job I had was putting together wooden bed rails. I was on my feet most of the day, I made mistakes, and the job was in a warehouse downtown. Yet for the time I was working there, I was on time, I was responsible for what I did, and I wasn't a drain on my parents during the day.

My purse has a zipper. When I’m shopping, I keep it zipped up. I never thought someone might try to put something in. I thought about theft.
Dear Aubrey,
Nobody really "wants" to work, but we have to. We don't have a choice unless we win the lottery or inherit money. So get off your high horse and find a job.
Signed,

Wonder if OP can take the admission of putting the item in her bag to clean her record with the the police. May get a bit of revenge on Audrey. In some way. Glad grandma helped with a place even for a short time. That allow Op save for her own place quickly.
Why wasn't Abrey throat punched early in the story? After listening to her speak, someone in her world has had to want to.
When I turned 16 (1975) I couldn’t wait to get a job!! I made $2.21/hour and gas ⛽️ was 39 cents a gallon. I always had money 💵 in my pocket, even after my $86 car 🚗 payment 🤣
I remember those days.
$2.21/hour was more than minimum wage! Good for you.
Hell, I couldn't wait to get a job when I turned 18! And it didn't stop until my current job at 26!
Aubrey did wanted her out...she got what she wanted.
The sister is so rude!
You're letting the high school child under 18 talk down to you so another doormat story
