Considering Ray Phillips and Tony Bourge were in Budgie, how the hell were they so broke they had to be paid by the government and then Ray had to re mortgage his own home to launch their new band? Saw these guys play twice and a buddy of mine had their album, which was better than a lot of the dross around at the time
@@heftyalan1152Well, he was in the line up for the first 3 albums, so that's long enuff (Approx 3 full on years). I am just surprised that the actual band Budgie was not name checked in the interview too.
wattienz Most bands made 2 albums a year in that era so could be 18 mths to 2 years and bands tend to make very little in the early years. Queen didn't start making money until 4 albums in and I think it was around the same for Black Sabbath, Paranoid could be 3 for Sabbath, and Kiss, Destroyer,. I did a lot of the early years stuff with bands like everyone living in a transit but none of the bands I was in became the Beatles, Pete Best, Rush, John Rutsey, or Foo Fighters, William Goldsmith. That would be a hard pill to swallow but not one I ever had to manage.
The government offered anyone setting up their own "Business" 40 pounds a week per person for up to one year (as long as the business) was still running in order to get people off the dole

Budgie probably didn't start to make real money until after Metallica began to cover their songs and hey got publishing checks.
