  • Watch Review: Frederique Constant Slimline Monolithic Manufature

This watch features possibly the first fully mechanical wristwatch with a gliding second hand, and an oscillator running at a crazy 40Hz.

Would be interested to see how accurate you’re finding it

Looks better on the back than I thought it would.

This is a purely awesome concept. Worth putting in a collection for it's uniqueness but! Is the rest of watch composition marginalized do to its production type? Is it really a further value to traditional watch making? The movement is not pretty in the back, (possibly) mind have as well went with a steel backing. The function is very impressive. This will likely be as good as it gets for this type of movement but it is good if not great.

Thanks for the review, I would love to have even the “hacking seconds” in action. Curious what color are the hands, are they blue or black?

Maybe we can cover that in a long-term test notes follow-up, thanks for the suggestion! The hands are black and according to their website, polished by hand.

there's a breguet that runs at 10hz (this monolithic manufacture is 40hz) - that watch might also have a gliding hand. "In 2010 Breguet introduced the Type XXII reference 3880 ST, with a frequency of 10 Hz"

    • @WatchCharts

Thanks for watching and commenting! The Breguet has a small seconds dial and an even smaller indicator that indicates the high-frequency movement, while the second hand itself moves at a more noticeable pace. It would certainly be interesting to see if 10Hz on a center second hand would be sufficiently smooth to the naked eye.

I just received mine and noticing it’s losing time, close to a full minute in 24hrs which is really bad. Have you noticed any issues with yours?

Might want to send it back if it does this. I am pretty sure the accuracy is meant to be higher.

      Mine did the same.
When i let run out power reserve and wind as recommended in the users manual, i can say it is almost cosc.
Not only the FC, other new watches i bought where not holding time, but needed time to become more accurate.
Oil, gear train, main spring need time to work in each other.
I am curious if your monolithic gets accurate when you wear it a bit longer than the point you unbox it.
Same as a new car, the engine needs miles to get better and better.

Grand Seiko spring drive clearly dominate by comparing this model with Grand Seiko Spring Drive. The accuracy of the GS are more accurate with their 9R movement. For the price point, I would rather go for a GS instead. I have seen reviews about this watch losing its accuracy which doesn’t justify the price point. It’s a good attempt by FC to try new complication but the timekeeping accuracy isn’t justifiable.

I have one of the limited edition models, and I can confirm that the accuracy is not great. The tech is really new, and I am sure FC are working to improve the performance of this escapement type. There are lots of other benefits that often get overlooked: innate antimagnetism, shockproof, no lubrication, fewer moving pieces means less can go wrong, double the power reserve with the same main barrel and spring, and it SOUNDS REALLY COOL!

Sadly, it's an expensive paperweight. A sundial is more accurate. For nearly $5k it should run better than +/- 1 minute per day. A colossal disappointment. I'd send it back but I think the design itself is faulty. Maybe I'll send it back and get it back in a year.
