Point of clarification: SDI protocol is not for turning off the camera. It’s for when connecting or disconnecting power. The power switch doesn’t blow the port. Swapping batteries does. Once you plug in a battery, power travels through your device chain regardless of power on/off status.
Kofi, you’ve been popping up on my browse page more and more and since I want to move more into the commercial space next year, I’ve been super interested in your videos. Just realised I wasn’t subscribed (that’s fixed now) but I just wanted to show my appreciation to your videos and information. It’s truly felt that you know your craft and what you’re talking about without all the BS around it, thanks!
People begged for the Pocket6 in a box form. They got it. And the complaints followed. It never ends. Chasing their tails. Honest review. Nice look. The BM image is a thing. The digs at Micheal keep coming... he'll never do it again. That's for sure. IF he did it in the first place. Funny.
That was the biggest criticism of the pocket cameras (form factor) and I think they smashed it with this one Ahah anyone making jokes at Mike were there when it happened, it’s something we all laugh over, but also cry a little inside at the same time lol
I have an Alexa, a RED and several blackmagics. I bought the fix because for a quick grab and go camera. It’s the way I like things to be as far as it’s for factor and the image is stunning, especially when paired with good anamorphic lenses.
I appreciate this approach a lot. A couple years back I made the mistake of buying into the hype of the GH5 because I kept seeing things about it, but in reality, I needed auto focus and that camera sucked when I needed that. It might be good for other things and I did do a goo chunk of work with it, but my work would have been much easier if I had set the criteria as you said for which camera I actually needed to buy.
I've made that mistake so many times, then got mad and blamed TH-camrs for it, but end of the day, consume information until all your needs are met and then pull trigger on whatever that is !
I think you made an important point about the PYXIS. You said that being able to view the image from the side monitor was a "bonus". And that is exactly what I thought when I first saw the PYXIS. That this feature was complained about by a lot of content creators at its launch resulted in my losing confidence in a lot of TH-cam creators. Especially when you consider that a lot of high end cinema cameras have side screens. At this point, I trust fewer content creators when it comes to camera and lens reviews. Don't worry. You're safe. I trust you!
The monitor debacle really confused me if I’m being wholly honest, cameras get rigged all the time , and where this camera is and who it’s intended audience is, I was surprised that just owning a monitor wasn’t an easy solution.. then they made a monitor lol so fancy that! Thanks for the support 🫡
Literally!!!! Like, look at the FX6. The monitor is needed. I think the screen being massive and actually high quality on the PYXIS is why people are upset, they just wish it could be on the top like the Red Komodo. I honestly wish it was on the top too, but if I’m ever using this, I would be using it with at least two monitors. One for myself on camera, and one that’s remote (for the AC). I think at this price range, there isn’t much that we could ask for (besides maybe internal ND).
@@masonoleson9497 At this price I don’t think you can ask for internal NDs. The Komodo X, even with its price drop, is still over $2,000 more than the PYXIS and has no internal NDs. Are there any cameras around $3k that have internal NDs?
@@AllThingsFilm1 The BMPCC 6K pro has internal ND and they can be found for less than $2k. Granted the ND options are only 0, 2, 4, and 6-stops. But I still wish they would've taken that feature over to the PYXIS, since Black Magic Design showed that it was at least possible to do in a small body at an affordable price.
@@masonoleson9497 the 6k pro has a smaller sensor and thus can use smaller filters inside the body. The Pyxis has a much larger sensor and less body around the sensor for internal NDs to move out of the way.
100% agree with your points about the hype and not buying a tool just because a lot of creators are excited about it. For me, the FX3 is basically the perfect camera for everything I do because it's an owner/operator type of camera that can work in a wide variety of scenarios very well. Whereas Blackmagic Cameras, including the Pyxis are really geared much more towards controlled environments. Knowing what you need is so important before jumping into buying gear because it's cool.
Using the BRAW system has been a savior for me in doc work, even though it takes a minute to rig up, which I can do at home before arriving, but the ease of not having to worry about WB that much, helps me quite a lot. And if swapping to FX3 it worries me that I loose that functionality later on and need to make sure I get things right at the get go more.
You get the Studio editing software full version free worth $500 to keep. As opposed to a Adobe Premiere ongoing payment system of $24 a month. 6:5 Anamorphic sensor mode is the only thing I'm interested in because my Canon R5C can only shoot 16:9 sensor mode 2X Anamorphic FF or Super 35.
Thanks for the in-depth review! :) At first, when Pyxis was announced, I was somehow sceptical about it and not really interested in it, but currently I'm kind of warming up to it, to the point of considering upgrading as an A cam from BMPCC 6K. Especially that the price does make it far more affordable than a high-end URSA or RED Komodo X, even in terms of rigging it up. One thing I really regret this camera doesn't have is built-in ND filters. Like, come on, Blackmagic, even Pocket Pro did have them, it couldn't have been that expensive to include, LOL 😉
Unfortunately, from what i understand, its a bit harder (and expensive) to make a full frame L Mount ND Filter, hoping for an upgrade or an adapter or something soon!
With my Pyxis I'm using the BM Video Assist 7" 12G and two 48Wh Sony NP-F batteries with it, and it's a heavy and cumbersome monitor setup. I'll be glad when the Pyxis monitor ships, which should be the middle of this month.
Thanks for the video, some good info in here! Just curious as to what lenses you were shooting on for the intro / spec-ad you mentioned? Looks almost like the Orions but the character doesn't quite look like the Remus, looking great either way!
Kofi thank you for what you do. I just switched over to blackmagic there was something pure i enjoy about it. even got my first irix cine lens. My question is , if someone where to go blackmagic as their first choice for business and professional work, would the pyxis be the obvious choice over the other versions of BM ? seems like the price is not far from the pocket cinema stuff, but the modularity aspect of it , seems amazing. Also would you say its ready to run and gun out the box, or will it need a little work to get going. Sorry i missed those points in the video.
Autofocus is a stupid feature that just removes one more aspect of cinema. Real cinema will never have autofocus. I don’t hear anyone complaining about arri not having autofocus.
The difference would be kind of the same as the differences between a photography lens and a Dzo Vespid prime if that makes sense , the Pyxis is much smoother with highlights
