  • This is a short video of a solo visit to my first home in Jamaica, NY. ------
I posted a longer video: "A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE". That video, from 1999, highlights a conversation with my sister as we walked and remembered our old neighborhood. Also check my videos about my ex-wife's adultery. I'd like real feedback from real people.

Such a small world. That family ended up having a child in the 70’s named Scott Hyland who is actually Puerto Rican and Scottish. His dad who lived there was Puerto Rican with African descent while mom was Scottish/European that area changed drastically from the 50’s to late 80’s/early 90’s and somehow that kid made it out of that neighborhood when it got really rough. He went from stick-up kid to stand up dad. Your bringing back memories.

I was raised in Jamaica, Queens, went to St. Monica’s from 1st grade thru 8th. Mom worked at Ideal Toy, Dad bought all his components to build a stereo system from Fisher Price. Went shopping all thru out Jamaica Ave., loved Gertz and Woolworth’s lunch, Sunday’s at the Valencia or RKO across the street, later on lunched at Teddy’s Restaurant, Mom also worked at Fisher Beer...went there for a snack after school. I still have a few relatives that live in New York, though not in that neighborhood. Maybe when I talk to them I can ask about it. They may remember something. It’s interesting though, that as young as I was, I never remember even hearing the “n” word until we moved to the South. My sisters and I came home from school and had to ask our parents what that word meant because some kids at school called us nig _ _ _ _.

Directions for bus riders were easy:The Red bus,Jamaica buses,Green bus lines,Orange was Queens Nassau transit, grey was North Shore. If I had a quarter I could ride the BMT to Canal St.then transfer to the West End line to Coney Island.I would cross over to Nathens, have a hot dog and Pepsie return to Jamaica and still have 5cents in my pocket. stay tuned of part two....

I’m still stuck here in Jamaica. I’m 62 now. My parents moved here in the late 60s. I bought the house from my parents in 2010 and because of extenuating circumstances I’m stuck. As a kid I got here just after it was great I guess. I did love the Valencia before they donated the building to a church, that is before I was mugged right in front of the theater. Sounds like it was really neat before I got here. I always wondered what happened to those people that moved out when my family moved in. No hard feelings but yes I am curious to know where you moved to.
