He didn’t work at the time so Nick was the breadwinner in the relationship and had to split her money with Sam to feed them both. The third is more of a stretch but ties into the second. Instead of splitting her money with Sam(Safaari) she had to split it(split up/breakup) with him cause she had dreams of making money and he was holding her back.
