Working on the kill floor is harder, the hide on some of the grain fed and bulls is over 1cm thick, and you will get flogged day in day out, the industry was good in the 70s and 80s pay wise when we had the tally system but the last 20 years has seen us go to hourly pay and the companies is all about faster production for less pay, ive got 45 years in industry and will be glad to see the arse end of it..

In 1999 went and worked at Pak'nSave butchery instead as the butchery assistant and cleaner. Way better than the works in comparison, they wanted me to do butchery apprenticeship at Pak'nSave but I wasn't too interested....but similar to you, thrown on the bottom of the rung doing all the dirty and extremely heavy and horrid jobs no one else wanted to do - both at the works AND at Pak'nSave. Def treated like shit and my body just was buggered and ached most nights like had the flu. Def not worth it for the minimum wage... Glad I quit the industry

No Union at the time so they easily got away with it and a mate got burnt with the super hot water as no training at all was provided for use of equipment which just they told him to harden up and put a plaster on. Terrible industry to work in and I’m glad I only lasted a very short time.

I used to work at the other end of this supply chain at MLCF where we would receive this kind of product and make our smoked beef, roast beef, sausages, hams, all that kind of stuff. I worked in our Defrost dept, and it was a darn good job. Started at $10/hour, and finished at ~ $19, in 3 years! Of course, it didn't last as I was laid off due to the company loosing our smoked turkey contract with Safeway or something like that.
