Hi there @wanyo . I just got the chance to play majority of this game and I really enjoyed the artwork from this. Thank you so much. Many of the stage designs and backgrounds blew me away . It truly felt like NES style art quality, but on a much higher scale that could have probably pushed the NES graphics to there limits if it was made during that era. I was that impressed. Thank you again for helping in the making of this game. Thanks for your time.
This game looks awesome. This is what I love about indie games. When devs take a classic retro style and give us more of it. Like what we couldn't get with actual retro games. This was the lost opportunity of the 32 bit systems in the late 90s to early 00s. We now had the computing power to have normal games with arcade style graphics but the trend at the time aimed for 3D games instead. But this game just nailed the NES aesthetic beautifully. The graphics actually triggered some childhood nostalgia for me so it's on the right track.

Looks fun! Def gives me Metroidvania + Mega Man + Towefall Ascension vibes, all great game styles. I'll put it on my list. Great review, very interesting.
Astalon: Tears of the Earth is a real gem of a game and is one of the games that impressed me the most that I have played this year. At first I was concerned about the rather few ways to refill hit points of the characters, but getting used to the death mechanic in the game and learning that there are benefits to dying was fun to discover. Powering up the characters felt rewarding and strategically dying to do so was unexpectedly fun. Also, it is worth getting to 100% map completion because doing so will result in an alternate ending.
Yes! Dying was never all that bad because you got to buy power ups and stop by the beast hunter to get extra orbs. And it could be faster if you wanted to go to another area of the map.

Especially in boss battles. I actually did the straight path so for me some of the early boss battles were tough . However once I figured out there battle patterns it was no problem. Just took longer since I wasn't as powered up at first. The shortcuts really helped too and I agree with you they were VERY satisfying to find when you find them along with uncovering secrets and items. There were times I found a shortcut or item them in the game and I was saying to myself: YES! THANK YOU!!! Now I can finally complete this area from earlier. LOL. Again very satisfying. It definitely and truly felt like I playing an NES quality kind of game all over again. I really appreciated the details they put into making this game. My take after playing this game: If you love metroidvania style games along with NES style graphics and music I highly recommend this game. Well worth the purchase. I'll even take it a step further and say if this was an actual NES game cartridge released game during that era I could easily see it being the price now of what you would have to pay for those very hard to find rare NES games. That to me is how amazing the quality of this game is in that manner. Again Pam thank you so much for making this video and I'm glad I found it. I would have missed out on this game if it wasn't for finding your video . I'm glad I got the chance to play this game, Keep up the good work.
Already what I like about this game because they used a retro-style pixel art that is not over-designed. Simple sprites make it actually easy to tell what stuff is.
Great review! :) There are some criminally underrated Metroidvanias, Astalon is definitely one of them. It was my favourite Metroidvania of 2021, and probably my game of the year as well. I really hope it was a success and Labs Works can release the sequel to Castle in the Darkness soon. :)
Best metroidvania this year, by a far margin. It's from the same guy of Castle in The Darkness, so it wasnt a surprise. And this one is small project they were working the same time as the upcoming Castle in The Darkness 2, to add insult.
While I'm not disagreeing with you or even agreeing with you for that matter. There's been several that many would argue that claim. Ender Lilies, F.I.S.T, Unsighted. Death's Gambit: Afterlife, Grime. Oh and Metroid Dread all sping to mind. Just saying! 👍
@@ZamWeazle Most of them, while being great at action stuff, leave a lot to be desired in the sense of fun and engaging exploring, with REAL secrets and optional content. People dismissing Astalon based on visuals are at loss.
@@GodHandplayers I hear you! I would however argue based on reviews and sub reddit opinions that Death's Gambit: Afterlife for example is at least as highly regarded. It possibly has the most depth, longevity and diversity of builds that I've seen in a game recently but I guess the souls like aspect is perhaps the only thing that keeps it from being mere popular I think. I'm btw not saying that it's a superior game necessarily. Just that most won't agree that Astalon is miles better than any Metroidvania this year. Its definitely shares the top spot imo though!
@@Cannotbetamed1 One new review for us, girl! It's got that retro flavour like Aggelos with loads of content. Kinda ~hard~... guess you'll have a fun time.
The music in this game is soooo good. Not only that it's good on its own. It perfectly suits the overall design, the atmosphere and you never get tiered of it. So many good games have mediocre soundtrack it's criminal.
You said that Algus felt a bit stronger than the others, but I felt that way about Kyuli instead. Her longer range meant I was using her more, which meant I put points into her arrows more... So I figured that was likely why. It could just be a matter of who you're putting points into.
She's super strong too, but you also need to be precise with her. I thought Algus was easier because though he didn't have the range, he'd hit anything in front of him.
Pick up Algus' familiar and he basically becomes the game with the "moar dakka" button mashed down. He was turbo stomping bosses like nothing by the end. Kyuuli works wonders on cyclops types because her arrows crit them every single time.
And I felt that way about Arias. Dashing everywhere, reflecting projectiles, and shredding enemies in seconds was too good to pass up most of the time.
Hiya Pam, I'm one of the artists on Astalon and I just wanted to say thanks for playing & reviewing it! Really glad you enjoyed!

My take after playing this game:
If you love metroidvania style games along with NES style graphics and music I highly recommend this game. Well worth the purchase.
I'll even take it a step further and say if this was an actual NES game cartridge released game during that era
I could easily see it being the price now of what you would have to pay for those very hard to find rare NES games.
That to me is how amazing the quality of this game is in that manner.
Again Pam thank you so much for making this video and I'm glad I found it.
I would have missed out on this game if it wasn't for finding your video . I'm glad I got the chance to play this game,
Keep up the good work.
Already what I like about this game because they used a retro-style pixel art that is not over-designed. Simple sprites make it actually easy to tell what stuff is.
Awesome vid. Love your content ❤️
Thanks!
Great review! :) There are some criminally underrated Metroidvanias, Astalon is definitely one of them. It was my favourite Metroidvania of 2021, and probably my game of the year as well. I really hope it was a success and Labs Works can release the sequel to Castle in the Darkness soon. :)
Convinced me to buy this one. Great review.
Thanks!
i saw this the other day! i want to try it on my next day off!
This looks fun. Just put it on my wishlist for the Switch. Thanks 😄😄😄
Have fun!
Thanks for the recommendation.
This game's OST is 🔥🔥🔥
For sure.
I tried the demo and liked what I played. I might try and get the physical release when it ships.
Was looking for a new game to play on Switch while I wait for my new PC to arrive. PURCHASED. ty
Hope you nejoy!
What I had heard before didn’t sell me either but now I’m in. I dig the graphics.
Excited to give this game a try.
Looks great but I’m seriously wanting Ender Lily first the artwork is so beautiful!
just by watching the art I would love to play it.
I haven't played Castle in the Darkness. I didn't know there was a sequel coming either.
It reminds me of Konami’s “Knightmare II The maze of Galious” on the MSX. I am pretty sure the developers got inspiration from that game.
The music in this game is soooo good. Not only that it's good on its own. It perfectly suits the overall design, the atmosphere and you never get tiered of it. So many good games have mediocre soundtrack it's criminal.
Can you even name 10
Hi Pam. You are the definitive guide to metroidvanias.
Wow, thank you!
You said that Algus felt a bit stronger than the others, but I felt that way about Kyuli instead. Her longer range meant I was using her more, which meant I put points into her arrows more... So I figured that was likely why. It could just be a matter of who you're putting points into.
Plus she can climb walls!
@@candmmi Ease of navigation is the strongest ability in any Metroidvania (in my opinion), so yeah, that absolutely helps.
This looks like a fun game. I'm going to try it out.
Have fun!
Huh, never heard of this game but it looks good! I shall have to try it out some time.
I watched this and then bought the game and my wife and I have been taking turns trying to complete it
I'd never even heard of this game but this looks great. I'll definitely pick this up.
Awesome, have fun with it!
Looks like I'm buying this on switch tomorrow!
Did you take voice and diction or acting classes at some point? Your cadence, enunciation, and inflection are excellent. Great review, by the way.
No I haven't, but thank you.
