Hi from Wollongong mate. Stay safe. I'm an old guy. I remember when batteries and motors wouldn't last a mile. Those figures are amazing. Electric power is the future.
Great video Sam and love the real world stuff. I agree that the battery drop off at the end can be a pain and has caught me out a few times. I have an e8000 with an e8010 504wh battery. It definitely is not linear at the end. What I have discovered tho is the onboard electronics is doing some calcs based on mode, demand in the battery and battery feedback to determine range. I am not sure how frequently the system is checking and updating predictions on range but if you can change mode say from trail to eco early enough at the tail end of battery capacity and take it easier then the range can be increased by a fair amount.. for anyone that is interested I have 2 x e8010 batteries that I rotate and after 46 full recharge cycles on each they are showing 95% capacity via the steps app. Bike has done total of 6657km and 52hrs and 10 mins total ride time.
Hey Derek thanks for the kind words... Yep totally the battery use isn't linear and I totally understand its hard for the system to work it out BUT haha I never changed from Trail setting so I expected it to be a little more Accurate.
Coincidentally I started today's ride here in Santiago, Chile thinking "let's see how much vert you can get..." Same bike but w/ Current 2.8 back and MM 2.6 front. Cushcore front/rear. 95 kg fully kitted. Bummer that I didn't get my timing right bc I had to bail early, but got 28.88 km w/ 1407 m of up/downhill. Finished w/ 2 bars. Again, mostly ECO so not apples to apples. But... definitely the big mt. scenario you mentioned. Hopefully next weekend I be better on my timing as my curiosity is officially piqued! And... love this bike! Motor is a big upgrade on e8000 which was full on whereas the EP8's adaptive use of power means you almost always have what you need- not more/less. www.strava.com/activities/4751216746 My 'normal' ride gives me at least 1000 m of vert in a 90 min. sprint w/ me using majority Boost & Trail (probably more boost than trail as I'm lazy too) Appreciate your reviews Sam!
Hi Sam, I did a range test on my brand new Stevens E-inception 9.7 AM (726 watt EP8) yesterday and the current conditions here in the south of The Netherlands are horrifically muddy due to many weeks of non-stop rain and some snow. So that meant I was basically plowing all the way. I’m 105 kilos including gear and the bike’s 22 kg. I “just” got 50 km’s and 700 meters of climbing out of it in mostly 85 nm Trail mode. It was 4 degrees so not ideal for a battery either. On my Decoy I would get about 45 km’s in trail mode on the same route but that’s during summer in the dry. I was also a bit disappointed however I guess the surface and temp must have had major impact. Will inform you when I’ll be able to do a dry surface and warmer range test! Keep on doing what your doing man!
I have one of these, I was also the first and only person so far in NZ to break one. But through this I found out Shimano reserves 50Wh for bikes that have lights and electronic shifters (I think shifters too) to make sure you at least have lights and can change gears when the assist runs out. In the case of this and many other bikes we don’t need the reserve for lights so you can remove the reserve and get access to the full 630!! This bike is mega!! I love it
@@NipponRider The Shimano guy in Auckland did it for me. I would call them - +64 9 478 1969 and ask. Hey Sam, At level 4 assistance, this mean you get a multiplicator factor of about 160%. A rider who puts down 250watt at 80rpm is equal 30 Nm . So apply 160%, and you get an average torque of 48 Nm That is what is very cool with the new app! You can put it on trail with level 6-7 assistance and max torque, and will get the same maximum power from the motor , you just have to put the effort in to get to it. My 2020 meta power 29 essential sips battery in eco when i get down to 20% and that with the e8000. I know the point of the video was to be in a single mode and it was really cool to see the range of the new motor and bike. Great Job!
thanks for the test... I have an emtb equipped with shimano EP8; so far only a couple of times I consumed more than three battery bars and I happened to end up directly at the red bar thus skipping the fourth .... did it happen to any of you too?
Classic. I have a reasonably heavy Bianchi with the EP8 and I can just get about 40KM. Some rides with almost 1000M of vertical, I can only get about 30km. I have boost high everything, Trail 2 notches below that and eco two notches below that. So basically it's full, a bit less and a bit less from that. Having a drastically reduction of power in the lower settings just makes it hard on my knees.
Shimano motor - excellent. Shimano battery indication - freaking backstabbing knifewielding Brutus in the back! Can confirm battery/range indication is extremely sketchy once it hits 20%. Basically always head home and charge it once you hit 20%. Have been betrayed by it several times. Great comparison, glad you included the SL even though it's a different bike. Curious... How would things change in the mountains in a comparison like this?
considering how much more effort it took on the SL I would say this is not a fair comparison. if you did this in ECO the effort put in may have been on par but the range on the EP8 would have increased considerably. I have this meta power SX and have done 37km in the mountains an only used 20% battery. on the other hand I have gone to jump tracks and rode in boost mode and only got 45kms so the point is the more the bike assists u the less the range

I know it's not a comparison with the SL for battery but you mentioned it. Did you ride both bikes in similar temperatures? Cooler weather has a big impact on range compared to the warm.
I also have an EP8 motor, but only two rides on my new ebike. I still haven't changed the factory settings. In profile 1, ECO and TRAIL are identical! If you put Lv4 and 70NM in TRAIL, what would you choose in ECO and BOOST? Yesterday, with factory settings, 90% of the ride in ECO mode and 630W battery I had reach 54km and 530m ofclimbing. Great video once again! I would like to ask you one thing, why didn't you do the range test in eco mode instead trail mode? Don't you think your numbers could be better with a little less assistance or you think less assistance is not acceptable to move a 25kg Ebike with the ep8? I have a 2019 kenevo with 460Wh battery and usually use the eco mode with a 20% assistance (best range ride done 85km and 1600m positive, 72kg full equiped rider). Thanks in advance and keep doing such a great ebike videos!
good question I jsut wanted to to get that average ride and I know the average rider is going to send more time in trail than ECO only reason really.. That is amazing range out of the Kenevo!

@@SamsBikes What’s your experience with the bike overall so far? I’m really tempted to buy the exact same model. They have one in stock at my local supplier.
Hi Sam what is it like riding past the speed restriction on the ep8 and how does it compare to the brose ? As I seem to be always pushing past this limit and its hard work on the brose. Thanks for the great vid 👍
As always great video and charts to break down ride stats and excellent to compare with the Rise that bike is very interesting. Thanks for torturing yourself for our entertainment. Are you riding a stock saddle or something else?
Sam great video and overall the range looked pretty good to me. You’ve probably been asked this before( I don’t look at the comments to much) what would you say are the plus points of the commencal SX over the power 29?
Matt thanks for the kind works, the Sx is a more park, jump super enduro bike very fun to rider easier to move around on the trails due it its smaller wheels. The 29 is more a backcountry / enduro bike which still can do everything but more designed for enduro.. I think both bikes are great options.
Thank you so much for this test. I just ordered the Canyon Torque:ON 9 and i hope that i can push it to the 60km so i don’t have to order and carry the extra battery... Are you going to test the new Torque?
Thanks for the video. Very relevant for me as I have a SC Bullit on order with the same motor/battery setup. I already have an extra 630wh battery as I am 87 kilos and ride a lot of big mountains with lighter guys on Specialized Turbo Levos with the Brose/700wh setup. Glad you like the EP8 motor better than the old E8000. I am currently on a SC Heckler and was wondering if upgrading to the Bullit was going to be worth it. Now I really think it will be. Also would love to see you do a range test on the same course with a Turbo Levo with Brose/700wh battery using similar power settings as with the EP8. Question is how the Ep8 stacks up with the Brose in terms of efficiency. I've always wondered that.
With my spectral ON 2019 with E8000 motor and 504Wh battery, I Do 25km and 1200m uphill in trail mode lower setting. 30km ans 1500m uphill in eco mode middle setting. I drain my battery on every Ride ! I think the EP8 Can Do better
I don't agree that you can get "stranded" if you run out of battery. I use the ep8 in my 28kg bullitt cargo bike. With some equipment on it it is easily over 30kg. The gear ratio is "okay" for riding up a longer climb without support (you'll just be slow) and in the flat sections electric support is not even needed imho.
Hi Sam sad you’ve taken off your “woahhh” in the opening sequence when you make the jump. Always used to make me laugh. You must be getting all serious
Thanks for trying to do a Rise comparison battery wise. Most people seem to be saying that the Ep8 is v.slightly more thirsty than the bosch. Also shows that staying out of boost (much as I love it) makes a massive difference
Disappointing is Shimano´s decision not to use the whole capacity of their batteries for the sake of lifespan, in compare to other ebike systems. They cut charging at 4,15V and cut power at 3,0V. That means it charges to cca. 95% and discharges to 15%. So we have 20% less capacity than falsely advertised. And they don´t mention this anywhere, you have to do your own research and measurements, sad...
I use my ep8 with 630 Wh battery on a bullit like a fool. Eco mode at 10% and with 20 Nm max torque, in this configuration its impressive: my last ride was 38 km and 1300 m d+ with 65% battery save. Great job
@@SamsBikes I know it sounds crazy but I've always used ebikes like this. I'm trained and the motor with these settings is already enough to get me to the top on a super enduro bike without feeling like I haven't worked hard. Try it for yourself. As soon as I use it I'll send you my settings ;)
@@eroslizzio6532 Send to me too!!! xDD I have a Bullit for two days, but I don't know what is the best combination of the three modes between battery range and performance. Another doubt. What is the diference between Profile 1 and 2? You are a beast! xDDD
derestrict - to render or leave free from restriction, Just saying 🤣 Interesting that they still cant get the range to go down at a predictable rate near the end of the battery. I have two batteries for my E8000 and one dies on the last bar and one give about 5k!!

What glasses are those? Can you do review?
how you count calories during ebikeing?
With my garmin
Thank you so much for this test.
I just ordered the Canyon Torque:ON 9 and i hope that i can push it to the 60km so i don’t have to order and carry the extra battery... Are you going to test the new Torque?
You can do it in Eco 100%. I have asked Canyon so lets see. Send us a photo once you get the beast
Haha sorry no it’s to much work but I think you get the idea of the test
Thanks for sharing as you can see my heart was 130 for 4 hours not really much more I can put it. so I think thats it in this type of test!
The rise comparison would be running it at full boost and that is fairly good, to be honest.
Yep I thought as much! Trust me it was a hard ride haha
Why are his handlebars backward?
?
Sam, review the Simplon Rapcon PMax 🤙
Lenard I wish I could ill email them again.
Hope you can do a testvon the Rise, very interesting bike. Finally i got word from Kona, they say they will be dispatching my Remote 160 SL this month
Yep I really want to try the Rise... sweet and on congrats on the Kona send us a photo on Instagram when you get it.
@@SamsBikes oh, you just got yourself another follower on IG
Thanks champb
“Lil bit of a cold” AKA covid positive.
hahahaha na I was fine just a head cold
Nice vid bud can you add air temp to stats I find range in winter lose 10km of range in winter
Good call Andy yep it was about 8 on both days... I shoot both videos in the same trails 6 days apart.
Shimano are good bikes
I fast forwarded to 9.20 by chance.
I would hate to run a thousand dollar battery till it is empty.
Hi Sam sad you’ve taken off your “woahhh” in the opening sequence when you make the jump. Always used to make me laugh. You must be getting all serious
Hahaha I’ll put it back I lost the sound and need to dig out they old file
Thanks for trying to do a Rise comparison battery wise. Most people seem to be saying that the Ep8 is v.slightly more thirsty than the bosch. Also shows that staying out of boost (much as I love it) makes a massive difference
Disappointing is Shimano´s decision not to use the whole capacity of their batteries for the sake of lifespan, in compare to other ebike systems. They cut charging at 4,15V and cut power at 3,0V. That means it charges to cca. 95% and discharges to 15%. So we have 20% less capacity than falsely advertised. And they don´t mention this anywhere, you have to do your own research and measurements, sad...
hmmm maybe that 504w torque battery is enought then for me :) thx!
haha me too! that was a long ride
I think downrate is the word you were after. Apologies for being an arse. 🤣
Total arse haha totally sorry i got the word wrong only picked it up when watching it live
@@SamsBikes I think I'll allow it as otherwise your content is top drawer. 👍🤣🤣
SL 4 ever
hahaha Yep Lee it is a beast.
I use my ep8 with 630 Wh battery on a bullit like a fool. Eco mode at 10% and with 20 Nm max torque, in this configuration its impressive: my last ride was 38 km and 1300 m d+ with 65% battery save. Great job
Haha 😂 mate why did you spend 10k use the motor and get more dh runs! Thanks for the kind words use that beast
Haha send me your legs and your settings lol
@@eroslizzio6532 Send to me too!!! xDD I have a Bullit for two days, but I don't know what is the best combination of the three modes between battery range and performance.
Another doubt. What is the diference between Profile 1 and 2?
You are a beast! xDDD
A self charging emtb will beat that coming soon.. 😁
Wow that sounds cool
Nah. It takes ages to charge using the charger. Even a long downhill would only add a minuscule amount.
derestrict - to render or leave free from restriction, Just saying 🤣 Interesting that they still cant get the range to go down at a predictable rate near the end of the battery. I have two batteries for my E8000 and one dies on the last bar and one give about 5k!!
Oh man I know let’s see how many people catch me on that! Haha so hard to get it all right! For me it’s super important that last 20% even if they say you have more range but definitely not less
@@SamsBikes Would be nice if they could just show % on the screen. Good test really fancy the Rise especially with how easy it is to stick the extender on although can't wait to see the new Decoy and see if they bring out the 700 battery. Oh yeah what was the temperature when you did the test in the "mud" 🤣🤣 as I am sure you are well aware it has a huge affect on range.
So you now have even longer to listen to that horrible ep8 motor rattle
Yea maybe 🤔 but i don’t even hear it now.
The Bosch is much louder
Get tested bruh
Thanks Rider!!!
